Prometheus - Part 9

Ridley works very fast his like Clint Eastwood he can just bang movies out efficiently.

Ridley has been averaging almost a movie a year over the last decade. Most filmakers take atleast 18 months between movies.

I think the problem Ridley has lately is he seems to completely change his mind on a movie his working on like how Robin Hood was supposed to be about the Sheriff of Nottingham being the good guy and Robin Hood the bad guy or how Prometheus was originally a straight up Alien prequel instead of a spin off/prequel.

Those extra six months other directors have could very well be spent locking down the story. I've just written a novel and realised when coming to the end that it wasn't about what I originally thought it would be. Only difference is I didn't talk about it until completion, so didn't set expectations then deliver something else.

In short, I agree. I just think Ridley says too much too soon.

This film needs a sequel. I'm not one to always want them. I enjoy one-offs but Prometheus had a few nods to the future and, in my opinion, isn't good enough to stand alone.

I´ve recently bought a book titles `the greatest sci fi movies never made ` . And also another one a few years back titled `Tales from Development Hell`.
Both by the same author. Several movies are mentioned in those 2 books. RIdley is also mentioned working on several projects that ultimately never came to be but it´s basically EXACTLY what you just said. He , for some reason , never is able to work on something and stick with it. He overanalyses things to such an extent that it can either work out great or basically ruin the development process entirely.
Robin Hood is just one of those examples of him working on something and then changing it completely.

I know movies are subjective and all, but is it safe to officially label this as the most disappointing film of the summer?

No it's not safe.....and good luck OFFICIALLY labeling it :oldrazz:

Yup. He has no focus anymore. No clarity. That's the main problem. Something much bigger than Damon Linfelof.

No. Your expectations must have been sky-high for that to seem proportionate. This summer was full of suck. Prometheus was like a promising candidate who gets nervous and buggers up an interview. It's baffling and slightly regrettable, but you are still left faintly curious.

Prometheus is still the third best film I've seen this year.

It's the most disappointing movie Ive seen in a long time, mainly because I got sucked so strongly into the hype and it didn't live up to it for me at all. Do I think it's rotten to the core? No. There are things to admire and enjoy. I just can't get past several of the silly decisions made by Lindelof and Ridley.

Yeah I understand that some people liked it, but now that the summer movie season is coming to a close is the general consensus among critics and the GA that this was the most disappointing movie of the summer? That's what I've been getting by reading reviews from critics and message boards. Suppose Spidey might be in discussion as well...

I agree, Prometheus was a pointless, meandering mess. Most disappointing movie since the Phantom Menace IMO.

Um, what review sites are you looking at?

How on earth would you consider movies that scored 73% each be considered disappointments?

You need to find a movie that is actually legitimately bad for it to be a disappointment. Like Battleship bad. People who go with that "it was good, but not great, so I'm disappointed" just come off as whiny.

I really wish I had seen it another time while it was in theaters.

I probably could've given a 2,000 word dissertation on its subtext and underlying messages. :o

Um, in order to be disappointing you needed to have hype and/or have audiences expecting it to be good. Movies like Battleship didn't have either. Considering Prometheus was suppose to be one of the best movies of the summer along with The Avengers and TDKR, I think it's pretty obvious that it was a HUGE disappointment. The question is: is it the most disappointing movie of the Summer? Based on the reviews I read and chatter on forums like this, I'm inclined to say yes.

I guess some other candidates could be Total Recall and Bourne Legacy. But not many expected those to be that good anyway.

I should have too. Blu ray will just have to do.

I tried talking about stuff like that but certain people wanted to make sure the discussion was all about how horrible this movie was and how it ruined their lives, and so forth.

No, you're just searching for validation of your own opinion.

Only seeing it once, I got some small grasp on the philosophy behind it, but I'm sure I barely scratched the surface.

When I saw TDKR for a second time, and was able to concentrate fully on the subtext as apposed to needi to keep up with the plot, it was like a completely different - and better - movie.

lol what? I think we can agree that Prometheus was disappointing on some level and obviously a lot of people feel this way. Why is it such a stretch to make the assertion that it was the most disappointing movie of the summer?

That's what I refer to as selective reading/listening. It's clear that you didn't like the film and were severely disappointed so you're only going to pay attention to opinions that are similar to yours. However, the movie has gotten plenty of appraisal from both regular movie goers and critics alike. Yes, there are lots of people who have been following this movie since the first 'Alien' movie came out...and many of those fans were left extremely disappointed, but that only makes up a small amount of the overall movie-going population.

Precisely.

I have to agree with that. This movie had a lot of potential that it did not live up to. It's not a disaster at all, but it's a bit frustrating.

Still don't see why its such a stretch to say it was one of the most disappointing films of the summer. If you put hype into the equation, its an extremely valid argument.

A film shouldn't be judged negatively because it wasn't how you or others expected it to be due to hype of all things. Hype just gets people's expectations up to a level where they most likely will never be pleased.

I believe this to some extent. People were lead to believe that it would be one of the better films of the Summer. The mixed reviews really were off putting to some people. You can't detract a movie critically because it didn't live up to the hype, but there's nothing wrong with labeling it disappointing.

The phrase isn't "worst film of the summer," though. It's "most disappointing film of the summer." Disappointment is gauged by expectations. I certainly don't think Prometheus is the worst film of the summer, as I actually liked it. But most disappointing? Sure. Because it had the potential to be so much more, and I expected/hoped it would at least come close to reaching that potential.

Um, we don't agree that it was disappointing.

You personally felt it was disappointing and are now attempting to thrust your own opinions into our faces under the guise that they're some kind of public consensus or fact.

Both of which, they are not.
