i think all the footage that would be realesed right now would be for the fans. and every year we have proof that fans dont make or brake a movie. its the general public.
if you have any example where a movie made more money based on convention footage realesed 1 year before the realese i would be thankful.
plus Prometheus is a movie that should be teased as much as possible. the less footage they realese this year the better IMO for the build up to the movie. then in 2012 they can realese a kick ass theatrical trailer.
Oh dark b, sometimes I swear........half of this post you have above me makes no sense at all, you seem to contradict yourself with in it but I will reply anyways.
Okay, there is a reason, many of these multi-million dollar companies release footage, posters, pictures a year before a film comes out. Most of them do it now adays. TDKR, Prometheus is releasing footage to some people just a FEW! Now I really want you to sit back and think about this before you just blurt something out.
All of these events that these big movies do, that only reach "fans"....why do they do it? It costs money to go to E3, to promote and have marketing create posters at Expos, and fly all the crew over to Comic Con to talk about the film? Why do they do it? Is it for fun? No. These multi-million dollar companies do see reason to do it, they are businesses, and they do know that doing this may have some benefit. Marketing is my background dark_b, I've worked in it (the liquor industry for 6 years), and have my major in business and going for my masters. I do know some about it.
And one of the most famous things that most marketing does say..."50% of your marketing works, and the big question is what 50% is it?" It is hard to say.
Why would WB, Fox, Sony any of them even bother, if we are going by your words release pictures, spend the money on websites any of that crap costs money, from Press Releases, to pics, to websites, to virals, to showing footage in Amsterdam to a very very select few people. Why do they do it because they are nice? No. They do it because there is marketing value in it. Every year almost every major movie does show stuff a year to 8 months in advance to small groups of people. Us fans ourselves may not make or break a film. This is very very true. However, because of the social media world we live in we can help spread the hype. I know that I have spread hype and shown the picture of TDK to hundreds of people directly or indirectly though Facebook, Twitter all of that stuff. These companies know that we get excited about it, and if there is early positive buzz in marketing, it is called planting a seed.
Hopefully you understand this. Film companies are as tight as they can be with money, and again and again all major studios release footage at conventions, expos, or even on the internet extremely early. The reason is because in our world today there is so much marketing hitting your eyes and brain every second that its hard to get attention in crowded markets. So if you lay seeds of positive hype then expand it and build upon it it can help create a bigger success. We are but a small percentage of the film going audience, but people such as my self, directly or indirectly can hype or help spread word of mouth of a good film, and give it enough if there is a sequel that people will see it even more so, (see Batman Begins)
Now does it help a lot? That is a question no one really can answer. But the theory is sound and that is why they keep doing it. That is why Ridley and Fox spent money on showing and editing new footage to show of this film to a small group of people. Not because they want to hug and kiss us, there is reason behind everything they usually do, they hope that it will plant the seed in us, and it will expand, and we will go on the internet and fill Social media sites, and forums with our excitement possibly getting others excited then it can expand. Does it always work? No. Can it, well it worked well for TDK and many other films.
So I hope you understand where I am coming from with this.
On the other topic, of course a writer is not going to trash talk, I am always cautious about ever movie but it never stops me from getting hyped about a film. The chances are much greater with the team in place this will be a good film. But hey if it sucks it sucks. Getting hyped can be fun, and if its not good well there it is lol.
