The thing is this. Peter and Gwen having a sexual relationship not only makes sense for them as a couple, but for every relationship Peter had afterward.
Peter and Gwen waited a good 1-2 years into their relationship to sleep together. ASM #99.
So, when Peter and MJ get together, having already crossed that path once with Gwen, it's more likely that Peter would be faster to sleep with MJ in ASM #149, despite the fact that the two of them hadn't even gone on a date since their first kiss in ASM #143. A virgin wouldn't have shown Peter's aggressiveness at the end of ASM #149.
And, having a sexual relationship with MJ and Gwen, and smarting from MJ's rejection of his proposal, he'd be likely to have the brief affair with Betty (The one that got away).
And having those three relationships under his belt, he was prepared for the general freakiness of the Black Cat relationship, and finally to settle down with MJ.
Minus Gwen, everything else is alot more questionable.
