The Amazing Spider-Man Quips, Wise-Cracking and Banter!

No. No. No. No. No. Spidey should not quip at all when facing a major villain. Maybe once or twice during the very first encounter between the two but just let it go after that point. It would detract from the gravity of the situation. If there's a hulking, 9 ft, lizard beast threatening the lives of hundreds of my peers, I don't think I'd be making a whole lot of wise cracks. The way I could see it working is like this:

Spidey and Lizzie meet for the first time and Spidey makes a few jokes about how someone possibly turns into a lizard etc. etc. then mid-joke the Lizard roughs Spidey up and Spidey realizes that this isn't a petty thief like the ones he's used to dealing with. We maybe get a close up shot of Spidey whispering to himself about how serious this really is and whatnot and then that would be it for joking around when it comes to dealing with the Lizard. The jokes and wisecracks worked in Spectacular Spider-Man because it was a tv show with a target audience of younger kids. This film is going to be PG-13 with a target audience of 15-21 year olds. I don't need jokes every 4 seconds.

That being said, the complete lack of Spidey's humorous nature in Raimi's films was a bit odd. I mean even during the montages of when he's taking down thieves it was lacking and there was a HUGE opportunity for Spidey to dish out the quips when he saved Mary Jane which was totally wasted.

Spidey needs to get beat up by a hulking 9 foot monster to realise he's not like a petty thief?

You're gonna try and tell me that if you received superhuman powers and quite handily took care of every criminal thrown at you, you wouldn't be a little cocky? It's quite obvious that he's not a petty thief, but Spidey might need to be given a reality check at first.

Smart ass.

Calm down bro, it was a joke.

I know it was. Hence why I called him a smart ass. That was a joke too.

Indeed sir. But for reals, I'd rather not have Spidey quipping as much as he does in that SSM video that was posted a page or two ago. That'd be overkill for me.

I'd still probably crap myself at the sight of a man-lizard. :funny:

People seem to be worried about overuse of quips, I don't think we need to be worried about that. As many have said, he'll probably run his mouth a little in his first run in with the Lizard, but once he realises that he might actually...y'know, die facing him, he'll shut up.

Indeed. It works excellently in comics and tv shows, but it's different seeing a real person (albeit an actor in a movie) going through the same situation in that way. Having real people thrown in those situations heightens the sense of desperation and danger.

Agreed.

I hope the next trailer is a little lighthearted...and has at least...y'know, a glimpse of the Lizard.

I hope it starts out lighthearted. Maybe with a clip of the Uncle Ben/Peter dialogue in the hallway with the "Isn't that the girl on your computer?" deal and then slowly flesh it out into a Dr. Connors/Lizard transformation sequence and end it with some cuts of Spidey/Lizard interaction with a horror-esque appearance of the Lizard to end it.

^Yep!

I hope they don't show the fake sneeze web thing, I want to see that in the cinemas. :funny:

Same here. I realized last night how ****ing stoked I am for this movie. I mean the 12 minutes of footage they showed at Comic con sounded ****ing awesome and I kept saying that to myself. Then. It dawned on me. There will be around 108 more minutes on top of that.

I was talking to my friend about this and he told me that he's not interested because it doesn't have Tobey Maguire.

I asked him how can he judge something before it's even out and he said "Just". :S

I wanted to punch him...

It's cool, he's a close friend...I'm allowed to say that. :D

I disagree. He should quip while fighting the major villains. Part of his charm is his wit, and his MST3K-esque wisecracks.

Did you ask him what's so great about Tobey Maquire?

Nope. That would totally detract from the gravity of the situation.

Spidey: "Oh, you're putting the lives of my friends and classmates in danger? lol better make fun of you!"

No thanks.

Spider-Man's nature is to make fun of the villain, unless the villain pisses him off. It's a big part of his charm as a character. The Spectacular Spider-Man got that right.
If you want the keep the gravity of the situation intact, go watch a Batman movie.

Because every single thing that happens in the comic and tv shows would translate excellently onto film, right?

I don't know when people are going to realize that this film is intended for older teens, not pre teen children like SSM was. It simply wouldn't work on screen for several reasons I've already mentioned, but I don't feel like going over them again.

Spidey can get away with that as a character because the setting and the characters are very superficial. However, when you convert these things to a more realistic setting, the jokes and other hyperbolic things that happen just don't translate. It's easy to overlook the danger that characters are in when its a tv show or comic because they aren't, "real". However, when you see real, living and breathing people on screen, you tend to give them more consideration and thought. I'm sorry but a huge hulking Lizard busting through the walls of a real high school does not scream "I NEED QUIPS AND JOKES RIGHT NOW!" to me.

Leave it for petty thieves and the beginning of the initial Lizard confrontation. That's it.

Sounds good to me. Plus, Peter is still a witty guy outside of Spider-Man. I'm sure there will be humor when it's just him as Peter Parker too. Not having him crack jokes while trying to save Connors and not die himself seems like a reasonable thing.

The Spectacular Spider-Man was intended for all ages, just as Batman: The Animated Series was.
I don't buy this argument that Spider-Man wisecracking wouldn't translate well to film, as if we have never seen a movie with a wisecracking hero.
I think that "it wouldn't translate to film well" is justified when it's true, but it's often used as a scapegoat for a lack of imagination or fidelity. If someone says they don't like x change from the source material, then I guarantee someone will respond, "x wouldn't translate to film".
