Maybe that was one of the reshoots and they just didn't have time to refine it. Vader was still awesome, though, it's just something odd I noticed while looking at him.

I'll agree with the slow start; but man, when it got going it rocked the theatre.
We have an argument that the collective wisdom of all on this board may be able to help with. I
say the the scenes with governor Tarkin and Princess Leia
had both of them as CGI. Others say they are done with good make up from previous viewings of both on screen. I say they are cgi.
    yay or nay?
9 out of 10 by the way.

8/10 for me. the last act and the fan service saved the movie.

I enjoyed my time with the movie, but overall, it was a jumbled mess. It had some good moments, but was infested with bad ideas. The first act was a perfect example of what to do with editing and writing. There were all sorts of painfully cheesy moments that made me question if I was watching a MST3K version. While I like the actor, I found the blind monk to be a very bad idea and fairly anachronistic. Moff was an unexpected and welcome addition, but the CGI was distracting. The Vader corridor fight was great, but a massive tease. He needed to have a larger set piece to reign destruction down. Vader throwing puns like a Bond villain made me sigh in disbelief.

All that being said, the movie looked and felt like a true Star Wars film, where TFA (which I liked a lot) felt more like a fan film. Every shot was fun to look at; there was just so much detail and texture to every scene. The production designers deserve an award and need to be on every single SW film going forward.

    8/10

The weakest part of Rogue One were the characters overall. There were several characters I did like, Chirrut Imwe, Cassian Andor, and Director Krennic were my favorites. But the rest were okay to boring.

Middle part of the film (about 10 minutes into the second act) really got bogged down in procedures. I know some of it was necessary storytelling, but they sure could have done without a lot of the fanservice, which was a bit much.

CGI characters were slightly disconcerting. I thought it would have been better to portray them in darker lighting or as holograms to disguise some of the flaws in the technology. But whatever, it wasn't horrible.

I thought the music was poor and didn't really seem to fit the film. That good old fashioned SW sound was there, but it felt out of place here. It kept taking me out of what I thought was a really good war/spy film.

Other than that, aces to the rest of the film. Most of the dialogue, action and set pieces, acting, cinematography.... all 10s for me! Can't wait to see it again.

Just saw it and I really liked it! It had a much more serious, dark and edgier tone which fit the story. I really appreciated this approach. It's much less space opera and more gritty action with lots of drama.

    A pleasant surprise! 8/10.

Agreed. I actually thought Jyn and Galen Erso were reasonably impactful characters, but the remaining were not engaging at all as you said and were also uninteresting for the most part. Krennic and Vader however were great.

The story, cinematography, and special effects were also all great and made the movie work for me.

Interesting. I actually thought the exact opposite. I thought Leia was perfect and Tarkin was very rubbery, especially round the eyes and mouth.

This is an excellent review, and really summarizes my view of the film. The music was incredibly weak -- the space battle scene at the end, which was visually astounding, really need to be supported by a rousing score, and it wasn't. Also, as you mentioned, some of the Rogue One crew were forgettable and unnecessary to the film (Baze Malbus, for example). I only really liked Jyn Yrso, Cassian Andor, K2SO and Director Krennic.

Vader, Leia and the final act were great, but all in all I thought the film was too uneven in too many areas to ultimately win me over (like TFA did last year).

Very true. That last bit of anakin/vader was awesome but i feel like it now contradicts a new hope in a major way. Leia ship made escape infront of vader and everyone knows, even leia knows that everyone knows, she is carrying the plans. So that talk between her and vader aboard the ship about being on a diplomatic mission to try and mislead vader does not make sense now.

Lets see how this movie ages. Force awakens has not done well in that regard in my humble opinion

Some bits of this movie I like better, on the emotional side and character developement, than on TFA. but TFA has better structure.

The 3D for this movie really sucked. Made a dark movie even darker with the glasses.

Beginning was slow but it really picked up after they got to Jedha. Didn't have a problem with the CGI. Great last hour and loved the final few scenes.

I forgot to mention this but did anyone get a "Battlestar Galactica (2004)" vibe from this movie? The look and tone of it all?

Wow. Very much a 9 out of 10 for me. First experience where I think a prequel movie made the movie that comes after it better. This movie makes the story line for EP 4 more dire and elevates the victory in that film.

I was worried about the Tarkin and Lea CGI and the used footage from EP 4 but I think it worked extremely well for what they had to accomplish. That last act was amazing.

giving Rogue One a 10/10, just like I did for The Force Awakens

Disney is doing great so far with Star Wars with 2 home run movies in a row. Keep it Up Disney :)

Seems the most common score is 8/10, which was the score I gave it awhile after getting out of the theatre last night.

I don't really have a technical system for my ratings. I go by how I feel. For instance, I gave Doctor Strange a 9 because I actually came out of that one feeling even more impressed than I did coming out of Rogue One. That's not to say the former is a better movie. It's simply how I felt afterwards.

I definitely want to see this in theatres a couple more times. Usually I need a couple viewings to really cement my feelings on a movie.

It's interesting to read the mix of reviews here. Reading the online reviews after I saw the movie, I couldn't understand why it seemed to be universally praised.

I didn't really enjoy the film. First and foremost, the characterisation seemed to be really poor. I didn't care for any of the characters, including Jyn who went from criminal to searching for her father to leading a suicidal rebellion mission without any real explanation or on-screen development. Her last minute apparent romantic interest in the man who very recently almost assassinated her father was also extremely confusing.

The rebellion assassin who murdered his contact / friend in the first scene, the Imperial pilot who fled the Empire's regime for ... reasons and the old married couple who joined with Jyn for ... reasons also seemed to have wafer-thin characterisation. Out of the entire band of rebels, I only really grew to like the droid. And when the droid died, it was the only time I really cared about a death. Everyone else just seemed to spout lines and perform actions as dictated by the script without clear reason.

Secondly, the story seemed to be needlessly complicated. I was expecting a small-scale, infiltrate and retrieve type story, not a grand operatic space battle. Sure, grand operatic space battles are Star Wars' bread and butter, but I thought that this movie was meant to be different as part of the expanded universe. It did make the final act more exciting, but when I didn't really care about any of the characters who were at risk, even the space battles lost part of their appeal.

Thirdly, there seemed to be a bit too much effort to pay homage to the original trilogy. I understand that this would be pleasing to the vast majority of fans, but to me it seemed to be too much and I was hoping to see a true stand-alone story (acknowledging that the fact none of the characters were spoken of or seem in the original trilogy would indicate a tragic end).

I understand that I'm in the minority when it comes to a poor review. For me, it really just comes down to the characters. Rey, Finn and Poe were charismatic and likeable and despite minimal screen time, at least had the basics of their characters sketched out. So, even though elements of AFA were weak, it was enjoyable because I cared for the characters. In RO, I just didn't care about any of the characters. I wish they'd spent more time developing Jyn's character. A story about how Jyn lost all hope and aided the Empire as an adult before getting greedy and landing in jail, followed by an unexpected message from her father, then leading into a redemption storyline where she's willing to lead a suicide mission to help the rebellion would have made the character more endearing to me.

It's somewhere around a 7 or 8 (the 8 I guess is possible due to having grown up loving Star Wars). The positives are the fan service and how the atmosphere captured the old Star Wars in many ways. Vader was amazing, as was the visuals, and it tied perfectly into A New Hope.

On the bad side the first two acts are pretty poorly constructed (not as bad as Suicide Squad or anything, but worse than I expected from Star Wars) and I was never made to care much about any of the characters, except maybe K-2SO. TFA handled the new characters much better in my view.

I was really, truly surprised how much I enjoyed the movie. I figured even with the wariness of reshoots and "troubled" talk it would be good but it turned out fantastic. Rare is it that I like a movie this much.

2016 may have been an awful year but Rogue One was a bright spot.
