Eternals Rotten Tomatoes watch thread

IMO, it’s as bad as all of those. Nice cinematography and a good score (which was really just a recycled score from a previous movie) weren’t enough to save it in my book.

Not gonna post about SR again after this post, but while I think it probably is better from an artistic point of view than SIII or SIV, truth is I would much rather watch those movies than SR. SIII at least has evil Superman who is sometimes funny and SIV has that so bad it's good type vibe to it. SR is just a boring, pretentious slog from a guy who was an overrated director far before he was rightfully cancelled out of the industry. Never was a Bryan Singer guy. Only movie of his I can say I loved post Usual Suspects was DoFP. Outside that, mediocre as hell.

The stuff about paid film critics or Marvel shills or shill media was always bull**** and social media troll nonsense. It was mainly driven by DC Comic and Snyder fanatics who simply couldn't accept that critics are a varied and opinionated bunch just like they are. And DC is finally getting a bunch of big movies made and they didn't strike the desired chord.

It's simple and psychological. People say they don't care but they do. People want to see something they care about get good reviews. They want to see it recognized as culturally relevant as art and not mere disposable comic book fodder.

If it was true, Eternals wouldn't have gotten bad reviews. Rise of Skywalker wouldn't be certified rotten.

Fans are a fickle bunch. They discount Rotten Tomatoes if they don't like the meter. They prop it up when it validates their beliefs.

Okay, but I’d any of that score really memorable other than the Donner themes?
He intergrates like anyone would do, but his original work is all over it and very memorable imo.

Also this use of the theme. So good at 1:40 -

Stuff that comes out of Disney, including Pixar and Marvel, is generally accepted by critics and audience. People expect quality, and I suppose that is what they usually get. I mean, there are certain films where the critical reactions still baffle me, for example, despite some issues, I thought BvS was a heavyweight of a film, that was very well made, with a fantastic cast who delivered great performances, yet, it was piled on so harshly by the critics ... I just didn't understand it, and I still don't. But, in the end, what do I really care ? I guess I care to a degree, but I don't enjoy the film any less.

Plenty of Disney movies don't review well. That's what makes this whole conversation so obvious. It's a lot of tribalism, nothing more.

As to BvS. I do think it's fair to point out that the critics' reaction to BvS mirrors the majority on that one.

It wasn't a pile on. It's just a matter of more critics disliking the movie. Just a few years earlier, The Dark Knight Rises got generally good reviews, despite its flaws. They weren't as good as The Dark Knight, but they were good reviews. It's just that a lot of critics didn't like it. Even audiences were clearly not as enthused by the movie as it underperformed.

Plenty of Disney films don't get great reviews.

It's a bad-faith argument to say Disney is paying off critics or media are shills.

I always felt some of the negativity against BvS was also driven by the trailers which basically revealed the entire film. If you saw the 2nd trailer you basically saw the entire story. And then the 3rd trailer gave away the only good action scene in the entire film.

27 of the last 40 reviews have been negative. Wow. If this trend continues, it will easily descend into the 40% range. Very unexpected.

Who underperformed? Bvs or Tdkr?

Sorry I meant Batman v Superman under-performed.
Don’t worry about it:) that’s what I thought. I’m thinking eternals will probably get75-80% audience reception in rotten tomatoes which isn’t to bad

I'd say that had a bigger impact on the audience perception rather than critics. But those trailers were bad and did spoil the film.

I'd laugh if this gets to BvS levels (probably won't though)

It's kind of surreal seeing the MCU get their first rotten on RT. It was bound to happen at some point, but with the MCU formula and them mastering the "competently made fun" blockbuster it seemed like that would never happen.

Ah well. When does No Way Home come out again? :D

It’s not like Marvel hasn’t produced “rotten” movies before (Thor 2, Avengers 2 etc).

I guess people are just shocked that it’s the overall critical consensus for the first time. It’s their Cars 2 lol

So true

As a DC fan, it’s rather refreshing to see a MCU film get bad reviews for a change.

It’s ironic, this movie, despite being an MCU film is not only being compared to a Snyder DC film, it’s kind being reviewed like most of us expected the Snyder Cut be reviewed a year ago. The Snyder Cut surprisingly got much better reviews than was expected a year ago and Eternals surprisingly is getting much worse reviews than expected over a year ago. I dunno if “ironic” is the word I’d to use here, but it sure as heck is funny to see. :funny:

I've never cared for Usual Suspects, unpopular opinion I know. Cool ending though!

The crazy thing is how bland Bryan Singer has literally directed 5 comicbook movies. That's definitely a record.
