Scream 5 in Development

The dedication to Wes at the end hit me. It really made it bittersweet to realize that this great thing he created is living on in basically the best possible circumstance, and isn't having their work outlive them the dream of every artist? Obviously we'll never know but I truly believe he would've approved of this movie.

Btw, apparently there's an Easter egg in a Youtube thumbnail that Kirby is alive. I didn't catch it, but I love that if it's indeed true. Especially knowing that Wes intended for her to live on. Really jazzed about the potential for a Scream 6 and all the possibilities.

Not sure it's the best possible circumstance. There was the TV series.

Nah. This was something made with actual people involved who knew and loved him personally, carrying on characters that he brought to life. Totally different ballgame. I've been a Scream fan for decades and while Season 1 of the series was okay, it was never the real deal for me. That felt more like cashing in on the franchise name while just essentially being a Scream-inspired meta-slasher. And it was cool for what it was but...this is a proper Scream MOVIE and the continuation of the franchise that myself and many fans had always hoped to see after Scream 4. Clearly made with a ton of love for the franchise and Wes' legacy.

I happen to think Radio Silence did a fantastic job with it and they've reinvigorated my love for the franchise.

I think the series should've ended with the third film. Not everything needs a franchise and keep going as a mark of success or quality.

The fact that Sam Carpenter is Billy Loomis' illegitimate child and is having psychotic visions of him is pretty much a jumping the shark moment for me for this franchise if we weren't there already.

I think a better way to honor Wes Craven would be to make something new and different. Dude reinvented supernatural horror with Nightmare on Elm Street. Than he reinvented modern horror again with Scream.

I feel like where we find Sidney in this movie seemed to pick up and continue on from scream 3 much better than scream 4. She’s now married to
kincaid
(which i absolutely LOVED and hoped for), she carries a gun at all times (like scream 3) she’s totally fearless, she’s in a happy place and has moved on from Ghostface/woodsboro completely.

I felt her character took a weird depressed/exhausted turn in scream 4 and regressed slightly which was always super jarring to me because at the end of scream 3 she had overcome her trauma and found happiness finally. Sidney in scream 5 seemed much more consistent with that, which I was very happy about because I’m someone who finds the ending of scream 3 really powerful.

I liked that they used Sidney sparingly because this felt like a perfect epilogue to her character arc which IMO was already completed from the original trilogy. Gale was also great in this and I loved her rapport/bond with Sidney. It felt just like old times towards the end

I called Amber as one of the killers as soon as the opening with Tara looking at the video from Ghostface showing him outside of Amber’s window. It was obviously a prerecorded video. But one thing that confused me is Richie’s involvement prior to arriving in Woodsboro. We see him and Sam make a roadtrip out of coming to town. Are we to assume he drove all night to help Amber target Tara or did he not get involved until he arrived with Sam?
I see Woodsboro as equivalent to Napa Valley, so only a 2 hour drive or so.

Well, as a fan of every film in the franchise to varying degrees, I feel like this was film was made for me. You are free to just skip the movies if you think it should've ended 22 years ago, I'll gladly check out more films with this creative team if this proves successful enough to do more with it and the returning cast is game.

And...just as was the case with The Matrix and WB, Spyglass owns the rights... they were always going to try to make a new Scream film at some point one way or another, with or without the original cast. I prefer this type of continuation than a flat out reboot. There's a great history there and it allows for all this multi-layered meta stuff that Scream fans have come to enjoy. And of course there's emotional attachment to returning characters.

Also, the kills/Ghostface sure put the STAB back into Scream.

By the time we got to 3, there was too many non-knife kills.

This had some peak-franchise kills/Ghostface moments. For sure.

The Wes/Judy sequence had me on the edge of my seat, just loving every second of how they milked the tension of it. And it hurt even more because I really liked both characters and didn't want to see either of them go. Brutal.

Totally agree. I didn't mind that she was featured sparingly (because the new cast was great) and liked her character progression here.

Loved her phone call with Ghostface, talking about how derivative they were and then she hung up on them mid sentence.

Gale also had a nice little character arc and progression here compared to previous films.

After sleeping on it, the film is good overall but I felt like they didn’t spend enough time with the new characters to build up the tension of the final act. Between when Wes/Judy are killed and Dewey at the hospital, we don’t see them again until Amber’s party which there was no passing dialogue to set up this event. I completely agree with reviews that say Wes knew how handle pacing in his films because there’s a lot of fat here that could have been trimmed or dedicated to other characters—specifically Amber to make her reveal a little more shocking and Vince to make his death not seem like such a throwaway.

So far, my rating would be Scream>Scream 4>Scream 2>Scream 5>Scream 3 but this could change with a couple more viewings of the latest.

As someone who appreciates good continuity in my film franchises, I just am amazed that this series has managed this balancing act of getting increasingly meta, while having a cohesive lore and a great sense of continuity.

A lot of franchises in general don't do it this well, let alone horror franchises. I think for a newcomer, watching 1-5 would be a fun and rewarding experience where the movies keep building upon one another.

I loved how they tossed in that shot of Ghostface turning in the voice changer that was stored in the hood/mask. It’s such a nerdy aspect we’ve all wanted to see for 25 years.

Yes.

Also loved finally getting some Scream 3 references. Gale talking about her bangs on TV and Dewey going back because he needed to shoot Ghostface in the head (learning from his experience with Roman).

I really can’t wait to see this again. Scream movies are super fun on rewatch.

Yesss. Also can't forget Sidney
being married to Mark

Yeah, I'm already itching to see it again. I think I have to see it at least one more time in theaters.

I can't stress this enough for everyone, if you have access to an AMC Dolby Theater I highly recommend seeing the movie that way. The mix/score sounded awesome and the movie looked fantastic. It really added to the visceral quality of the intense scenes. Just from a technical perspective alone, this film was wonderfully done.

Wait, Sydney is married to Kincaid? How did I miss that?

Anybody here a fan of Dan Murrel?
He is going to be dong a marathon on his Patreon of the first four Scream films, today.
The Marathon starts at 2pm Pacific/5pm Eastern.
You can join Dan's Patreon for as little as $5 month!
I just joined, I hope to see you there.

Just back from seeing it. While I had some issues with it I really enjoyed it overall. It was a fun ride and I think Wes Craven would be happy with it.

The pros;
- The opening scene was terrific. Worthy of a Scream opening and a big step up from 4's.
- Ghostface was brutal in this. Ruthless
- Dewey was the MVP of the legacy trio. His death was heart wrenching.
- The death of Judy and Wes. Up there as one of the most intense sequences of the series.
- Tara and Mindy were by far my favorite of the new characters. Especially Tara. I think she should have been the leading girl honestly. She acted rings around Sam.
- I love some fan service, and lapped up all the winks and nods they made to the previous Scream movies and other horror movies.
- The final showdown was chaotic and bloody.

The cons;
- The reviews were right about seeing the killers coming a mile away
- The killer motive is probably the most flimsy one yet in terms of reasons for killing. Toxic fandom, crazed fans......its very much a reality so it sat better with me than Roman/half brother/I gave Billy the motive in 3.
- Sidney kind of felt she was there just because she was a legacy character. She probably had the least material to work with other than just come back for her usual kick ass antics. Gale and Dewey both felt like they had more chew on. Especially Dewey. Gale even turned another corner in the end by saying she was going to write about the great man Dewey was rather than sensationalize another couple of killers. I felt Sid got the short end of the stick in that regard.
- Kyle Gallner was wasted. They could have hired anyone to play this nothing character.
- The Billy Loomis hallucinations were so cheesy and unnecessary. They didn't even make sense to me considering Sam never met her father. Didn't help that Skeet Ulrich's de-aging effects were bad, too.

Nitpicks as a Scream fan;
- There was a continuity error in the opening scene. When Ghostface is quizzing Tara about the Stab movies he says Sidney was in all of them except part 8. But in the opening of Scream 4 Jenny said only the first three Stab movies were based on Sidney and after that they just started making stuff up because Sid threatened to sue them if they kept using her and her stories.
- Dewey laying out the rules and saying never trust the love interest. I mean apart from Billy the love interest never turned out to be the killer. He also said there is always two killers. Not in Scream 3 there wasn't.

Now I want to talk about the nods and easter eggs from the previous Scream movies;

- First and foremost I love that they brought back Dewey's theme from Scream 2. That was such a nice touch.
- Tatum's ashes in Dewey's trailer
- Seeing Martha Meeks again
- Sid is married to Mark. I am assuming that is meant to be Mark Kincaid.
- Confirmation that Kirby is alive. How many people spotted that? On Ritchie's laptop in the recommend videos on the right you see a video called 'Interview with Woodsboro survivor Kirby Reed' and the thumbnail was Hayden with long hair.
- The nobody actor who was playing Randy in Stab. I distinctly remember him being annoyed about that in Scream 2 when he's ranting at Dewey that they got David Schwimmer to play him, Tori Spelling for Sid, but "They cast Joe blow nobody to play me" lol.
- "Lemon squares are in the fridge"

Overall I'd give it a 7/10. Solid entry to the series. My rankings in terms of which ones I personally enjoy;

Scream 2
Scream
Scream 5
Scream 4
Scream 3

Solid and fair review man. Glad you enjoyed it overall. Argh, this continuity error is gonna bug me now! Must fix with head-canon somehow...lol

Yes!!! That was so cool!

I just got back from seeing it. Wow, just wow. This was fantastic and I only wish Wes Craven was here to see it. I don't even know where to begin. It's smart, brutal, funny and emotional, which is everything I was hoping for. The 3rd act of this movie is so damn good. I was literally on the edge of my seat. I may go as far to say its my favorite 3rd act of any of the sequels.

All of the new characters were brilliant and I was particularly impressed with Jenna Ortega. Every one of the new kids was so engaging.

The OG trio was fantastic as always too.

Deweys death was so heartbreaking. I teared up a little, not gonna lie!

As for the killers, I was spoiled on Richie but not Amber so that was a fun surprise. I did think Richie was sort of a predictable choice but I still thought it worked really really well. The toxic fandom motive is a relevant one and it's what I was hoping the movie would tackle head on, which thankfully it did.

The de-aging on Skeet Ulrich looked iffy but I attribute that to the technology more than anything. Nothing I have watched has been able to nail de-aging effects, so it is what it is.

Still can't get over how damn good that 3rd act is.

Im definitely gonna have to see this again soon. I'm sure there's a bunch of things I missed on my first viewing, but I loved this movie. Another fine addition to this fantastic franchise.

Side note, some lady brought her kid and he was crying during the 3rd act saying "I don't like this movie!!" Hahhaa

Literally just realized this moment that I have off Monday for MLK. Yup. I'm definitely seeing this again if I can on Monday.
