If I was Sony, I'd release a official photo of Shailene as Mary Jane quickly, just to calm everyone down. There are still people out there who think the earlier non make-up pics are what MJ will look like in the film.

Looking at the recent photos, (I'm just speculating) MJ and her family are new neighbours that moved next to the Parkers. It's possible MJ and Peter become friends, but MJ fancies him even though Peter still pines for Gwen. With Harry Osborn thrown in, this smells a bit like 616 with some Ulitmate added.

yeah I just hope that side of her comes out during the film. I think thats all alot of the reasonable people are hoping for, that they DO utilize her ability to look that good. The other mean spirited stuff is unfortunately a by product of discussions revolving around this type of casting/character. thats unavoidable.

I remember when Daniel Craig was cast as James Bond back in 2005, with fans and critics saying he's ugly and blond, and should dye his hair black (even though Roger Moore has brown/blond hair ).

Well, look what happened now...Billion Dollar Bond.

It would be kind of fun if the film makers did that. Have MJ all plain, dressed up as a tom-boy, riding a bike, with Peter never really noticing her. Trying to keep MJ out of sight like in the 60's comics, with Aunt May trying to set Peter up wouldn't really work today.
By making MJ plain and not noticeable, that blind date idea could work by giving MJ a makeover (yeah, the idea has been done in tons of teen movies/sitcoms, e.g She's All That, but they might go through with it)

may and peter's relationship certainly needs expanded on, but the current relationship feels very much like mother and teenage son imo. it's not exactly off

Oh don't get me wrong...I liked how things were presented in ASM. I'd like to see them evolve more and May get more screen time.

also hair and suit don't matter... not much time passed in the raimi films and Kirsten went through different hair colors and styles in each film...

and Peter did go on to date Gwen in the books instead of MJ after they met... so it's not entirely pointless or forced.. its actually kind of a natural way to introduce such an important character.

I am not worried about Shailene's acting and i know she can look gorgeous, I've seen enough beautiful photos of her to have confidence in that. I'm just not digging the look of the initial photos of her as MJ.

But in Marc Webb I trust, I have high hopes SW will be a terrific Mary Jane.

Think of it more as May setting peter up for a "play date" rather than a romantic date. It's REALLY not unheard of for family members to be overbearing this way...

hell my aunt last summer was like "Justin, Carole's (my step grandmother) grand daughter is in town, she's about your age could you please show her around?" I dreaded the thought of it.... luckily i didn't end up having to.. but i could EASILY see May do that to peter in the movies

eh i wouldn't want the "she's all that " aspect... but, Mj could easily be a tom boy rough around the edges girl when she's not dressed up to go out... it's true to many girls actually. She goes un-noticed by peter till she makes herself up. None of this "rough girl has never been pretty and needs her hair did and BOOM pretty" keep it real, where maybe MJ goes all natural when she first moves in and when she's dealing with her family issues.. and not social ones.

she will be a smaller role. I do think Harry and Norman's while small, will also be larger than MJ's i'd bet.
