Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings General Discussion and Speculation thread

Easr coast being hit by Tropical storm IDA is going to dent that box office. Cars abandoned subways flooded people unfortunate hope every one that got affected are safe I had to cancel my plans for the movie over it :csad:

I didn't hate Black Widow either, but honestly the more time that has gone by the less I like it and its mostly because I thought it should have been much better than it was.

Still I consider it alright overall, but like I said before I have no real interest in ever rewatching it. I was really worried going into this movie that I might just be fatigued on superhero movies overall, especially Marvel but Shang Chi changed that around big time and now I can't wait for Eternals or NWH.

So....when is the quality of these movies going to dip like some keep claiming now that the Infinity Saga is over? Cause....it ain't starting with this one. This movie is awesome
I feel like the first movie of a franchise Marvel does not miss, they have had a few clunky sequels in IM2 and Thor 2. Ant-Man 2 was enjoyable but I liked the 1st better, Cap 3 was a top notch trilogy to me. GOTG I have high hopes to have a complete great trilogy, part two has a few issues but I liked it.

I think the release time of BW hurts it, the movie was solid but knowing the character is no longer with us hurts it. If they had added it to the Phase 3 rotation it would not have been a bad thing, I think people expected her to die anyways so it would not have given it away.

I didn’t have any real issues with BW. I loved The Red Guardian and Florence Pugh’s character (her name escapes me right now). I’m looking forward to seeing more of them in the future. The movie was a nice self contained story. I agree that it should have been released during Phase 3 before Endgame. Probably would have had a better reception.

Yeah the third act was your typical exploding things falling from the sky boring mess we’ve seen too many times. Hopefully Shang Chi is different.

I thought it was a better movie than Black Widow (which was a good movie, but I am not a die hard comic book fan, so I am probably over selling Black Widow a bit). It's not going to be the huge cultural significance Black Panther was. I loved Black Panther, but I didn't feel it's cultural significance as I am Asian American. To me, BP was just another movie, albeit a good one.

The 3rd act of Shanq Chi was miles better than Black Widow's 3rd act.
I think they were both different, a lot of the climax in super hero movies are going to be the same. BW is much more like the Cap movie endings and Black Panther so it is more seen. I did like the Shang Chi ending fight since I am an anime fan it felt like it gave me hope in case any got a good enough budget. That type of mythical fight has not been done in MCU.

Oh I definately agree I was watching an anime. The only knock I have against the Shang Chi 3rd act is some of the VFX. The atmosphere/sky was ugly looking but yeah the great protector? That **** was bonkers. Damn.

I thought it was very solid and enjoyable up until the big climax when everything just felt like CGI overload. It's unfortunately a bit of a trend with MCU movies for me. I guess it's weird because if I was a kid I would have loved the action stuff but as a soon to be 30 year old I find myself zoning out and losing interest when you get the big CGI set pieces and I feel myself much more invested in the character stuff.

Reminded me a bit of Black Panther, I guess both were made with a strong reason to appeal to a new market, but I enjoyed this one a bit more than Black Panther I think.

Enjoyed it overall, would probably say like a 7/10.

Yeah I liked it as a smaller background MCU story and I liked the family group. It wasn’t too ambitious but was fine for what it was going for. And Yelena Belova btw :cwink:

Is is that the CGI is poor quality or just that there was too much of it for you?

Damn, this isthe 2nd mcu movie that I missed out in theaters....

It wasn't necessarily poor quality - it was just too much with this ugly grey filter/background.

Agreed. AS much as I was geeking out. The 3rd act effects were questionable. It proves why Chloe Zhao wants to shoot on location.

There were some shots that took me out of it due to the CGI and the physics and it looking a bit off (like a computer game) but for the most part I think it was just the amount of excess of it. :p

Yeah it really works best as just a little breather between Civil War and Infinity War. It's unfortunate that it was given the job of being the MCU's big return to theaters after the pandemic.

Anwyay, as for Shang Chi, this was the movie that DID deserve to be the MCU's big return. I feel like my enthusiam for the MCU got a big jolt of energy that it hasn't felt since 2019.
