Given the amount of debates that I’ve seen take place as a result of the amount of inconsistencies when it comes to continuity, along with how some are still embittered by the last two X-Men films, and how they secretly wish that something as great as First Class wouldn’t be attached to those films in continuity, I guess my question for everyone here would be:

“Would you have preferred if First Class had been a Reboot 100% of the way? Or are you happy that the film is considered and was made as a prequel to the previous X-Men films?”

There are definitely the pros and cons towards having it linked or unlinked with the established franchise.

On one hand, had this film been entirely a Reboot, then that would allow more freedom to redo characters that were considered to have been poorly mistreated and represented in the franchise. It would also allow them to bring in those old characters earlier into the franchise since they wouldn’t be bounded by the continuity timeline at all.

Then again, having this film connected with the franchise in continuity allows it to draw from the fanbase established by the franchise, along with possibly bringing back cast members that had portrayed popular characters from the past into the potential sequels.

So what are your guys’ thoughts on this?

Honestly, I would've preferred it just to be a reboot. It still feels like it is in a sense. But I don't know. As long as they make the movies good, I won't complain.

When it comes to these types of situations, where a prequel, let alone a prequel trilogy, is created for an established franchise, I always find out if the supposed last film in terms of the franchise’s established timeline, ended in the most satisfying way possible.

The reason for that is because it feels VERY ANTICLIMACTIC for me to see so much epic things happen in the prequel films, only to know that the story will end in such a mediocre way.

Take the Star Wars saga for example. Now I know that the Prequel Trilogy has drawn its fair share of criticism, but when it comes to the scope and level of danger established within the prequel films, it really feels anticlimactic to see on how it all supposedly ends in ROTJ, especially with the way Palpatine is killed.

It seems that this is suffering from the same wishy-washy, non-commital thing that TIH suffered from. I don't mind a reboot. I mind a reboot that still has affections for the old series and is unwilling to break it's ties completely. Batman Begins severed ties completely. So did Casino Royale. And don't give me Judi Dench as an example that it didn't. Other than 1 actor returning(because she was great in the role as M and why lose that?), the film makes no references to the previous films.

Star Trek is unique because they found a clever way to have their cake and eat it too with the whole alternate reality stuff..

Oh yes definitely. This in-between attitude hurt it a lot I think since people who were disappointed with the previous film lumped this film in with those movies and those that liked those movies wondered where Wolverine was and who these actors are. It had the troubles of being a fresh start to a new franchise without the benefit of lacking the baggage that comes with being the fifth film in a franchise.

Indeed. I mean within most of the trailers, and some tv spots, they actually used clips from the the first two films (mainly the first film though) to promote this film, and they even had Hugh and Rebecca making cameos for their famous roles within the franchise, so it's clear that they wanted to build FC from the previous franchise (the first two films in particular).

It's times like this where I wish that they could just make a new X3 and give some star Trek reason as to why the events of Last stand didn't happen in some way.

Well if they really wanna do it, then the obvious easter eggs need to stop and they need to commit to just going the opposite direction in the next one (example: Mystique returning to her brother), but if they are gonna stay on the fence then basic continuity still applies. So I guess my answer is no...for now.

Well since there's like a 40 year time difference between FC and the first X Men film, a lot of things could happen between them.

I mean for all we know, Charles and Erik/Raven could temporarily reconcile only to be broken apart again.

Yes, please.

I really enjoyed on how the relationships between Charles/Erik/Raven were all set up. In some ways, it’s because of how exceptionally well Vaughn was able to introduce these characters to each other that I wish we could begin fresh to give these characters a more fitting ending to their journeys.

Heck, the only reasons why I would be against going for this being entirely a prequel would be because I LOVED the actors that were selected to portray the older versions in the earlier films. Hugh, Patrick, James M, Ian, and etc were ALL PERFECT for their respective roles imho, thus if we were to start afresh, then the chances of seeing them play their respective roles would be less likely.

In a more ideal world, this would have been a complete reboot and would have just been a Charles/Erik/Raven movie. Maybe the Shadow King would have been the ideal villain for such a film. End it with the school being established and Scott is the first enrollee. Maggy & Prof X split in the sequel(though tensions and foreshadowing were in this film). The split would be the main story of the sequel.

I will say that I had always wondered, prior to First Class’s release, on if Erik and Charles would have their “fallout” in the first film or not, since I had gotten the vibe from the first two X Men films, that Charles and Erik had been friends for years before their eventual fallout, yet in FC, we have it take place within the timespan of perhaps a month after their introduction to each other.

I think it would have helped it better if it was a total reboot.

Honestly, it still could be if Fox just lets Vaughn do whatever the heck he wants if they let him do a sequel. Continuity be damned, just let him have at it in second part with Cyclops, Storm, and Jean as new members of the team.

I'd almost guarantee it'd do better than if they went ahead with an X4, X5, or another Wolverine movie.

Well if people actually cared that Vaughn’s potentially satisfying trilogy in the making were to be connected to the lesser quality of films in the form of X3 and Origins, then there’s always that option again of just making a new X film that gives a new ending to the franchise in the way that Singer and Vaughn would have wanted it so that a definite continuity line can be drawn from his films to Singers film to the conclusion.

It should have been,...but it would've been a horrible business decision to do so, IMO.

Star Trek was rebooted 7 years after the previous film (Nemesis) and even then they had to get Nimoy in there (and Shatner was nearly in there), and so they had a time travel/blackhole scenario to have their cake and eat it.

Batman was rebooted by Nolan eight years after the previous film.

Bond got away with four years between Die Another Day and Casino Royale.

As for X-Men, it's trickier. It's been just two years since X-Men Origins: Wolverine and there is another Wolverine in development (which was very nearly about to start production this summer, before Aronofsky left). So there's less of a gap and a clear-cut divide.

it was a great movie, but woulda' been perfect with the original team.

No way! It was actually VERY cool catching easter eggs and references from the first two movies. And knowing what happens in X1 and X2 not only amplifies X-men FC but those two films as well. It makes the X-men universe so much bigger, richer in history, and much more epic in scope.

A typical reboot would just be back a square one. This is a quasi-reboot, very much like star trek where it can be seen as it own film yet still as a companion piece to it predecessors. Both sides are happy...what more do you all want? :oldrazz:

I originally wanted FC to be just a reboot, but so many people have come forward saying that FC has added depth to the original trilogy that I'm glad it's a prequel.

It's simple, go with the flow of it being a prequel, or if a few inconsistencies in the previous films are too much, just look at it as a fresh start. It's not hard.

People the moment bryan Singer was Involved the Idea of a reboot was out the door.If you do a reboot then both The Wolverine and Deadpool immedetly have to be axed.

Matthew vaughn may have blurred the lines between Prequel and reboot In Some Interviews but they hardly tried to trick people Into thinking this was a reboot.

If you reboot my attitude Is you need a whole new cast and crew.My problem was the James Bond series IS the same producers and writers who approved of Die Another Day are still In charge.Pierce Brosnon didn't write produce and direct Die Another day.Just
like for those who didn't like Quontum of Solace It wasn't Danial Craig's fault.Judi Dench should not be playing M In the second bond series. And yes Casino Royale and QOS should be called 1 and 2 In new bond series not Bond 21,and 22.

Star Trek brought an entire new team with the exception of Leonard Nimoy.Their time travel causing alternate timeline makes connections to past Star Trek work especilly since the writers keep Insisting these are still same characters just their history has been changed and the universe IS doing course correction.

First Class has way too many connections to X-Men and X2 to be called a reboot. And I hate to tell people this but a reboot would not bring the original team In.It would be like first X-Men a mix of characters.I hate to be one to remind people of this but It was the 70's team that made X-Men the top comic franchise. That team was Cyclops,Wolverine,Storm,Colossus,Nightcrawler, and Banshee.

First Class works very will with X-men and X2.

Exactly how I feel.

I've made my feelings on reboots known pretty well on these forums. Not something that I like. I am happy that these movies connect to the original trilogy / X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

That said, there is NOTHING wrong with getting a new set of eyes on the project to bring a new take to it.

Instead of throwing away all the great aspects of the X-Men movies because there were aspects of them that weren't as great, why not try to actually bring some credibility back to the franchise?

I have some issues with Vaughn's stylistic choices on this movie, but outside of him forcing the James Bond and 60's spy camp a bit too strongly in certain areas, I think that this movie was done incredibly. It was very true to the essence of the comics (despite changing major details), as well as to the essence of the previous movies. Yet at the same time, it brought it's own flavor to the table as well. People have constantly said since 2006 that if we could get Singer's knack for character, combined with Ratner's knack for action, we'd get a great X-Men movie. Well, that's exactly what we got. Just replace Ratner with Vaughn. This movie combines great character moments, as well as great action sequences, and is a great movie for it's efforts.

I don't know how I feel about future movies - either First Class sequels or sequels that take place post-The Last Stand, but I know that what I don't want is something that throws out the continuity, either entirely, or in part by disregarding certain movies.

You can make a First Class series of movies that becomes it's own thing, while existing in the continuity of the original trilogy. The movies don't even have to be a direct set up to X-Men either. It can just simply be a set of movies that takes place before the events of X-Men, and exists within that world, but doesn't directly set up the events of X-Men either. That's kind of how I felt about X-Men: First Class already. Yea, we have the split between Xavier and Magneto, and all of that, but it's not a direct lead up to X-Men, and that's fine.
