Venom Sony Revives 'Venom' Solo Movie - Part 4

Unfortunately Avi aint going anywhere, ever. He's made so much money for Sony and Marvel through his whole entrepreneurship into toys and merchandise alone that I think he's secured his seat at the table as long as he wants.
well they gave him the boot off of the main spider-man franchise for now, I consider that to be progress.

Just got out of the cinema having seen it, and I really enjoyed it =)

I went in expecting the worst given the reviews, but I honestly don’t think it’s anywhere near as bad as what the critics are making out...? Perhaps I’m horribly biased as I’ve been a huge venom fan since playing the ps1 game back in the day, but I’m really struggling to see the huge gaping flaws that justify all this backlash? I enjoyed all the actors performances, the action pieces were great and it was fun.

The biggest negative I guess is the third act and the story/ character contrivances to get there (as mentioned by the vile one already), but that still wasn’t a deal breaker for me... other CBM that are considered far superior by critics have struggled to have strong villains and solid final acts too...

(Also one really specific nit pick about a foreign location in the movie that was totally unessecary and clearly was not filmed there... but that probably bothered just me XD)

I’m just really not seeing why this is so very ‘awful’? I found it loads of fun and will be going back for more this weekend ^-^

And to address some of the huge red flags I read about on this board prior to the movie...

1. Eddie and venom make out!?!?
Worked in the context that it happens in

2. Eddie being a doofus
Didn’t get that vibe at all, more scared/confused/out of control

3. Eddie being too much of a nice guy
Nope. He’s an a** and does some stupid/bad things

4. No R rating
Thought they did well with what they could get away with, ie lots of violence, no blood (cos remember it’s not real violence if no ones bleeding!)

Also as a side note, seeing this movie with a very active, near term baby kicking off inside me all the time was the most surreal 4d experience in a movie I’ve ever had with all the body horror/symbiotes wiggling around possessing people in the film XD

Will try and post more cohesive thoughts tonight in the review thread. If anyone has any specific spoilers questions feel free to message me.

Think by the end of tonight we'll get a lot more people that have actually seen the film posting (already had screenings in the uk and other countries). I wouldn't write it off just yet.

It will probably end up with more positivity purely because everyone, including those who haven't seen it are already calling crap. so people will go in expecting the worst and may come out surprised that its better then the exaggerations would make you think.

Thanks for the review! I'm sure its not gonna be the Venom movie I wanted but I'm sure I can enjoy it on a campy fun level.

I don't know why but the visual of a pregnant woman buying tickets for Venom amuses me. It's great though to see it's not just your typical fanboys enjoying it.

Regardless of what happens, Avi and Tolmach need the boot. They’ve already sunk the Spider-man franchise and Venom, whether it skates by with a big box office or not, seems like more of the same empty corporate mediocrity. If they actually want a viable franchise they need to get these hacks out of there.
They(Sony) seem to be incapable of separating themselves from thes two. Venom was going to be the "Sonyverse Spiderman". Venom was going to be the catalyst that deal with Spidey's villains. But, when Marvel threw Amy a bone..."if it do well & not Rated-R, we may adjunct the two franchise & let Holland cross over. So Amy & Avi probably figure, they got a shot at the Bigtime; so, they took over the approach from a pretty good director, let Tom Hardy pull a Jamie Foxx, & dropped the R-rating....the rest is history. Now Marvel is closer than ever, in getting rights back. You can't make this stuff up....unless you're Marvel, whose existence is based on developing realistic plots.........and Sony fell for it. :ali:

I'm not advocating a Kraven solo, but you can say the same thing about the Joker, and he's getting a solo movie. But unlike Kraven, Joker has immense popularity and recognition from general audiences.

To be perfectly honest, I'm not really sold on the Joker movie idea with Joaquin Phoenix either.

To me there aren't any interesting solo Kraven stories. Dude comes to New York for the best hunt, and he wants to hunt Spider-Man. Dude's a ****ing big game hunter. What would his movie be about? Would he be hunting dangerous poachers or something who don't respect animals like he does?

I could see a Kraven movie based on Kraven's Last Hunt working. The comic is wonderful and basically from his POV anyway. But that would involve Spider-Man :o

I agree, but what Kraven movie is there without any Spider-Man? I don't think there is one.

But Joker is also a lot more interesting as a character and he would generate more interest than someone like Kraven and of course, is way more popular! That being said, I'm still not a fan of villains getting own movies. I prefer that they appear in the movies which are focused on the hero, it's harder to relate to villains anyway, even if some are sympathetic. To tell you the truth, I'm not excited one bit about that Joker movie! I didn't like Leto's version, I'm not interested in Phoenix' take either. I don't wanna judge movies before watching, but Nolan and his crew gave us an astonishing Joker, with Heath giving the performance of a lifetime! It's inevitable that comparisons will arise and truthfully speaking, the bar was set sky high! So anything less than that won't have a deep impact. If it's much worse, then for sure it will flop. I personally would leave Batman universe and any Batman characters untouched for a couple of years. The TDK Trilogy won't become outdated any time soon.

Sorry for the off topic. Back to Venom. I'm curious to see Flick & Stuckmann's reviews on YouTube. Usually I feel the same with them on most movies they review.

I feel like Stuckmann's gonna enjoy it. The vibe I'm getting is that this movie is an enjoyable popcorn ride that you can enjoy and laugh at with your friends, intentionally or unintentionally. But as a film, theres little substance or structure to it.

And I can live with that. I unironically, genuinely enjoy Suicide Squad even if I know it is an unruly mess of a film.

Lot of assumptions there.

Firstly the sony mcu deal runs out next year. They could bring spidey back or extend. Also their into the spideyverse film comes out in december. They could have that be canon to the sonyverse and have miles morales as the spidey of the sonyverse. So the assumption that venom is the spidey of this universe may be well off the mark.

Venom hasn't failed. It might do well at the box office we really don't know.

Also even if it does fail it doesn't mean that sony will give back the rights of spidey. They haven't made a spidey film yet that didn't take less than $700m at the box office. He is their star why would they sell him?

If sony decided to sell their film division they would sell it as a whole (with their star) and after the disney fox merger it is highly unlikely that disney would buy it.

We are living in a different age where studios now are trying create their own universes. By doing this, they trying to create a small universe surrounding villains, by establishing some foundation of the villain vs bogging down a film with a villain background & origin. Its the new thing apparently.

It may be, but I'm not very fond of it. I think that the world is oversatured with superhero and superhero related movies nowadays. Maybe I'm just oldschool. I'm not saying that we should stick only to Batman, Spider-Man & Superman movies, but in the same time, I couldn't care less about movies like Antman, Aquaman, Captain Marvel and so on. Don't get me started on Morbius, Black Cat or Silver Sable.

I;'ll be surprised haha as I totally doubt it.

Yeah, I know the reviews are bad but I’m still going to see this in theaters.

Need a good laugh every once in a while. This looks like a fun bad movie.

SS is legit one of the worst movies i have ever seen in theaters. It's the moment i stopped supporting the DCEU.

I agree. I cannot envision that movie, either.
Guys, guys, it can happen.
Kraven is nobility who falls, and 99% of the story is Sergei tormenting and enslaving Dimitri the Chameleon... PG-13 level. :o
