Spider-Man: Edge of Time - Part 1

:whatever:

Or, you know...we could just get a game where we can have a free-roam in a city. Just a thought.

I definitely still don't like this idea.

I just have to ask, are you against this game solely based on the idea of it not being free roam New York? If so, than thats weird to me.

Is it really that hard to make a game with one Spidey without a silly plot. We just need a stpry that has some of Spideys well known villains threaten the city and Spidey has to stop them. Freeroam plus another hero there to set up more games. Come on...

I think using the two Spidey's is actually a clever way to make the most out of a single location.

Also, I was initially against the idea of this game, but the location idea interests me a lot. Sure i'd love another NY free roam game, but we'd just get another cut and paste NY City. The idea of a detailed environment, designed exclusively to suit Spidey's abilities, especially wall crawling, does sound interesting.

Someone just tell me what good a free roam NY is any more? Why do we need to be able to visit every damn corner of the city?

I feel like Ultimate Spiderman had the best New York because you could swing across the bridge and into the tunnels. And its also just the most fun spidey game I have played.

It definitely needs to be a free roam in NYC, but that's not the only reason. The entire plot sounds stupid and silly.

They should give us a city the size and depth of liberty city.

Yep. The death of Spider-Man. Expect plenty of 60's Adam West silliness here, folks.

Easy to do in a game like GTA4, where the main character is limited in terms of exploration and movement. Spider-Man? That's gonna take far more work and detail into it, ESPECIALLY too much for Activision.

Well said!

That would be a dream come true.

I like the idea of being able to free roam indoors and I'm excited for his game. That's just it though. indoors, which cages Spidey and limits his abilities. It works perfectly for Batman, but for Spider-Man? You can only do so much.

Only do so much? How about intuitively being able to wall crawl, one of his most important abilities that so often gets left by the wayside. I'd love to have that as a practical skill at my disposal, as something that actually enhances gameplay.

Also, the areas seem big enough that web swinging really won't be a problem. I'm really curious to see some gameplay footage to see how this approach works

You could go anywhere in GTA that Spidey could go, granted Niko needed a helicopter to get there. It could be done. However as you mentioned, Activision doesnt think Spidey is worth a 2 or 3 year dev cycle.

The level of detail in Liberty City kills every incarnation of NY in the Spidey games IMO

I'd like a Spider-Man that does more than just wall crawling, imo.

And sure, some places in the building may be large enough for web swinging, but it would definitely not be enough that a city would've been. And that would be my point. EVEN if we get some web swinging, it won't justify that they're still closing Spider-Man's depth.

I think Wolvieboy has a point. Spider-Man isn't only about web swinging, and if done right wall crawling could be a really exciting addition to gameplay. I don't see the need for every Spider-Man game to be open world. Every formula gets stale after a while and we had four sandbox games in a row, and none of these fulfilled it's potential. (In my opinion, Ultimate Spider-Man came close.)

Still I would like a new free roam New York one day. But only if its done right. There are too many lifeless New Yorks in the gaming world. With only GTA4 providing a city that feels alive, and USM doing something different with it. And I don't think it needs to be all that big. A little bigger than the city in GTA4 or USM would be enough for me, as long as they did something interesting with it.

Spider-Mans depth? How much of that depth was explored in WoS or SM 3? If the trade off for finally getting a game a little more focused on character and an environment built properly for him is the loss of many generic and mass produced blocky skyscrapers, I can live with that.

Two horrible games does not count. Like I said, IF Beenox seems to care, then show us a great game with free roam in NYC. This may be a first step, but it won't be at the same caliber at AA and AC in terms of a great superhero game.

 You don't seem to be getting this.

ACTIVISION SETS RELEASE DATES!!! NO ONE, NO ONE CAN DO FREE ROAM IN 1 YEAR! NO ONE!

There. :)

But, still, I agree...slightly. A great free roam game is what I'm looking for. But with Activision at the helm, it's not gonna change.

Spider-Man 2 was supposedly a great free roam game, wasn't it? Or from what I've heard. If Acitivison can do that, then why can't they make a similar game with Beenox?

Short answer: Activision has gotten much greedier since then. Nowaday, they don't care as much about creating something amazing as they do about making money by churning out more of the same thing, with each iteration being less inspired than the last.

SM2 had good balance of Peter's character
SM3 didn't plan to have depth to the title character, all you need to know about him is the intro and his relationship with Harry, MJ, and his workplace
WoS? It had something in it? All it had is the title guy moving from one mission to the other as a constant puppet, unless you talk about the optional discussions between him and the ones he took order from

IF Beenox seems to care, then show us a great game with free roam in NYC. This may be a first step, but it won't be at the same caliber at AA and AC in terms of a great superhero game.
Assassin's Creed is considered a superhero game? Never had a clue

SM 2 was only considered a great free roam game at the time because it was the first one for Spidey. They never really managed to raise the bar from that though, with only superficial, cosmetic additions made.
