Spider-Man: Edge of Time - Part 1

Batman fares well because he's been treated with a lot of respect lately in mass media. He's had 2 more than amazing films(changing the landscape of comic book adaptations) and an incredibly successful videogame, which also changed how superheros are handled in the industry.
Spider-Man on the other hand has had to deal with recent failures. Between a terrible final film and constant under performing video games. He has to build his rep back up with the mainstream. Bats had to do the same thing(Batman Forever and Batman and Robin).

I think Spidey will come roaring back though. He's too great a character not to. It just takes the amount of respect he deserves to get there which brings us back to the root of the problem. Activision. Unlike Warner Bros, Activision has no stake in Spider-Man, they don't care what gets put out under his name.

Nothing to argue about there. Only nitpick is that AA didn't really change anything, at least not anything that has been released or is about to be released. We still only got movie tie-ins and the occasional (Okay, more than occasional) Spider-Man game.

i agree...while AA was and is, so far the best Superhero game, It wasn't ground breaking... not like Spidey2 and it's free roam/web swinging and sense of scale of new york. It helped change Video games as a whole, not just the superhero genre.

Id say GTA III helped to usher in the scale, free roam that we see now more than Spider-Man ever did.

I will say this tho, putting Spider-Man in a free roam NY was the best thing that happened to the character in games and something, i feel, they desperately need to go back to. Spider-Man has one of the most unique forms of locomotion compared to any other super hero and taking him out of an open city doesnt do anything to help his character.

ok, can people please stop trying to compare AA with Spider-man games? the best spider-man game (spider-man 2) came out almost 10 years ago now... and batman has had decades of crap-tastic games... he gets one Amazing Game (that is revolutionary to the superhero genre ... but as was Spider-man 2, and X-men Legends) and suddenly people wanna act like it's the best thing ever. Spidey's been stuck in an old formula that's just not working, and does need a better game. But it will never be the same tone as Batman.. unlike batman spidey is a lighthearted character. also... we may have to endure a bunch of crappy games to be able to get another revolutionary one.. just like batman had to.

While Batman has had bad games as well, it still doesn't matter because Spider-Man has NEVER, EVER even come close to having a game that's as good as AA. If Spidey one day will have a game as good as that one, it's even again.

Yes, Spider-Man 2 was almost 10 years ago. But still, if you compare, for its time, it still wasn't nearly as good as Arkham Asylum is. Not even close.

A very good post there!

What I meant is that it's sad IMO that my (among MANY others) favourite comic book character has to stand in the shadow of someone else, because Batman has had the favour of having the right people in the film and game medias.

Peter Parker as a character is more interesting than Bruce Wayne IMO, even though I think Batman has several stories that beat most of Spidey's. But Spidey has so much more to show than what he's been allowed to. It's frustrating, really.

EDIT: Even though I love Spidey more, Batman is really close so it's not that I'm complaining about Batman's success lol. I love it! It's just that Spidey deserves more than he's got.

EDIT 2: And I don't want this to be a Raimi vs. Nolan. I'm just taking the films as an example of another media. Spider-Man has such a HUGE potential to deliver a game even better than Arkham Asylum. :(

Spider-Man 2 was arguably more groundbreaking than Arkham Asylum. Before it was released free roam was only used by GTA clones. S-M2 showed you could do more with the formula, and it paved way for the likes of InFamous.

But there is no arguing about Arkham Asylum being a better game than Spider-Man 2 ever was, even if the latter was released along time ago. And still, there is only five years between the games.

Arkham Aslyum was pretty groundbreaking though simply in the approach to game design. Not quite a free roam, nor a straight out leveled brawler. Giving a superhero the same level of effort and depth of narrative and detail that any top tier gaming franchise would get. THAT is something Spider-Man is yet to do, and I doubt it will ever happen as longas Activision have their grubby little paws on it.

That game happens, and it will be a dream turned reality, I'm sure Spidey can reach that

I agree man. Spidey will always be my fav character. It's that connection with Parker that seals it, thats something Batman just doesnt have.

Its why im so harsh on these games and Activision/Beenox. I want Spider-Man to have a game that causes people to go "whoa, you HAVE to play this" because imo, he deserves it more than any one(ok maybe not as much as Superman, god knows that poor guy needs a good video game). I want a Spider-Man title ill be glad to display in my collection.

of course Spidey could reach it, just not with Activision. It all boils down to the developers putting a little more time and effort into the story and enviroments. Arkham Asylum delivered best in those areas because it set the mood for what we would like to know as Batman's longest night, everything in AA had a grim and almost disturbing look to it.

Same here

Not sure I agree, I connect more with Parker, but still can find some connections to both Bruce and Richard

Would it be alright if Carnage is the main villain? Carnage on a murder spree, killing random people, you may deliver some to hospitals and stop their bleeding, and how you reach and the condition of the person affects Spider-Man's status
Carnage would be the only symbiote character though, I'm tired of over-saturation by symbiotes when it comes to games, but if the game is done right Carnage could prove a real good boss

Can't have a full blame on time for that, Square could deliver two good games of the same series separated by one year of release only
But Activision -though I like their games more than what other developers (Capcom excluded) offer- should do better work and give more effort

The level of connection between Parker vs Wayne is more what i meant. Theres more of me in Parker than there ever would be for Bruce. Thats why iv always been so drawn to Spider-Man over Bats.

Love both characters tho.

I love the character of Carnage. I love the fact that a psychopathic killer got ahold of a weapon of almost unlimited power, however, i wouldnt put the character above a lot of other Spidey villains because that lack of a personal connection. I also think just because Carnage would kill a lot of ppl doesnt mean itd make for a good game

Its why i keep saying we need a Spidey game that features Norman Osborn as THE baddie. NO one in the Marvel U is as dangerous to Spider-Man as Norman Osborn. There is that personal, deep seated hatred between the two. I mean we've had countless Spidey games and how many of them have featured Osborn? That baffles me that we havent had a game recently to feature him as the lead villain. He is to Spidey what the Joker is to Bats. He deserves the spotlight more than anyone.

I totally agree with this. One thing that I absolutely love with AA, as I've said before, is that not only is Joker the main baddie, but he's also ALWAYS present in the game. It's really a Batman vs. Joker game. I'd love something like that between Parker and Norman.

No. We need Green Goblin or Doctor Octopus as main villains before we get to the C-Listers.

Featured Goblin as the big bad:
  • On the Atari 2600
  • The first movie game, the first media to adapt the true Green Goblin of the comics
Simply in a game: Web of Shadows on the NDS

Not a great record, Hobgoblin got a little more respect in games than he did

Not denying the need of Green Goblin or Doc Ock, especially Green Goblin, as the big boss in a Spidey game

The thing is though, if AA came out the same time as spider-man 2.. SOOO Much would have been different in the game... graphics, and game mechanics.. that quite honestly... you all would be speaking a different tune right now. Also the game would probably have been down graded considerably since Batman was still considered a Joke of a franchise in 2004. Proof in point... 2005's Batman Begins video game....

I acknowledge it wasn't groundbreaking, but I liked Begins.

Still would of been better than Spider-Man 2. Voice acting, story, pacing and gameplay was all better in Arkham Asylum.

game play would have been different.... but voice acting, and story probably wouldn't be much different.

Yea i kind of did too. Liked the stealth aspects to it.

Wasn't really digging the Begins game myself(although, maybe just biased since I'm not a fan of tie-in games). I wondered how the TDK game would've turned out to be, but that was cancelled.
