Spider-Man: Edge of Time - Part 2

Man, playing through inFamous 2 at the moment... So many things in that game that are the way a Spidey could be made, EASILY. Plain and simple, it would be perfect. Cool art style, good story that strikes the right balance between dramatic and funny, random events, side missions and plenty of collectibles, all built around dynamic gameplay. Also the boss fights feel so big but happen in the whole city, rather than one closed of area. You could let a guy chase you from one end to the other if you wanted. Imagine that in a spidey game, running away from Rhino or someone, with him taking out cars and building fronts and then moving through central park, etc. That would be so cool and intuitive, it would really open things up.

Dude i was thinking the SAME thing today.

Im like, i dont get it? Why does Spidey not have a game like this? There is NOTHING that Cole McGrath brings that couldnt be translated to Spidey. I mean damn, the template is there. Sucker Punch has shown you how to do an awesome superhero game in a sandbox environment.

why is everybody talking about sandbox games. Spidy needs to step away from these for a couple more years.

Maybe because we've been overloaded with trashy sandbox Spidey games in the last few years? And as we've discussed before Beenox only needs more time to do a better job. They have talent they're just not able to fulfill it with the limited time they are allowed. If Activision would give them two years, which is how long inFamous had, then sure they could probably make a fantastic sandbox game or a fantastic linear game. But do we really need another sandbox game so soon? We JUST got off that train, let's stick with the levels for at least another game or two... imo.

Because sandbox games are free-roam. Keyword there: "free." The majority of players these days consider free-roam and customization to be almost essential to gaming....people want to tailor games the way *they* want to play them, not be slaves to the on-rails, by-the-numbers linear storylines of years past.

As several posters already pointed out --- it's not the setting that's the problem: NYC is (always has been, always will be) a magical place, with tons of great settings to explore. What made the Spidey games stale was that they didn't give you a lot to actually *do* in the Big City --- beat up random thugs, rescue random idiots hanging from rooftops, go scavenger-hunting for unlockables and otherwise useless tokens.

NYC is the heart of Marvel. It's perfectly natural to keep reusing it as a setting. But there should be not only better graphics, but also more things to do with each new iteration of the city --- mini-games, secret areas, more variety of missions and sidequests....how about Marvel landmarks Spidey can actually enter and explore, like the Baxter Building, Avengers Mansion, Daily Bugle, Gem Theatre, Oscorp, Empire State University, Stark Tower, etc.?

You're going to tell me that there are better sandbox games out there that are better then games like uncharted 2 god of war 3 halo 3 black ops final fantasy 7 sonic Mario the force unleashed.

So you want one or two more mediocre to fairly decent Spidey games instead of Beenox actually working on something bigger? Granted, it's a known fact that we'll never see a good sandbox-type Spider-Man game, but maybe if Activision has another developer take care of the movie tie-in, then that possibility for Beenox to get two years might happen, but we can at least hope for a good sandbox-type game, or at least something similar to Arkham Asylum. Now, sure, we've seen some awful sandbox games for the character, but Beenox at least seems to be pushing towards something big. Again, we can always hope and talk about this, but the truth is that Beenox will just be making these "okay" games and nothing special as of right now under the wing of Activision.

You're going to tell me that there are better sandbox games out there that are better then games like uncharted 2 god of war 3 halo 3 black ops final fantasy 7 sonic Mario the force unleashed.

Aren't the Uncharted games sandbox or at least more free roam than the norm? If that's not true, then what makes Uncharted such a great game?

Halo 3 follows the same pattern as the other Halo games; not technically free-roam/sandbox one bit, but their linear levels are still exciting nonetheless and way more exciting than any Spidey linear we've gotten.

You call Black Ops a "better" game? Sure, it's a nice game, but still....it's just a Call of Duty game, lol.

Haven't played God of War 3 yet, don't play the Final Fantasy games, don't play Sonic or Mario, but I did play The Force Unleashed...good game, but a sandbox-type Star Wars game would be so, so, so, so, so epic.

Um absolutley. Red Dead Redemption is one of the best games this generation and its sandbox. Just because its a sandbox doesnt mean its a bad game. inFamous 2 is another sandbox title that is amazing. Batman: Arkham City could be considered sandbox and look how thats shaping up.

No he was saying that there isnt a sandbox game that can be as good as those he listed, i disproved that notion tho.

But no the Uncharted games are not sandbox at all. What makes them so good is, well everything. Gameplay, voice acting, directing, story, everything. Theyre almost perfect.

I feel that Spidey needs to return to the sandbox game because of his unique mobility and his connection to the city of New York. I think thats when he works best.

Im also not sold that Beenox could ever pull off a good Spider-Man game. But ill hold off judgement until i play their next title.

Play inFamous 2, then come back to me. Spidey needs to be in a sandbox environment. If you could put Spidey in a package as good as inFamous, we'd have the Spider-Man game we all want.

so your saying red dead redemption is a better game then uncharted 2 and god of war 3 or final fantasy 7. You're right about infamous and infamous two great games but I wouldn't say that there better then the above.

No i wouldnt say Redemption is better than Uncharted, but imo, NOTHING is, as thats one of my fav game series and one of the best out there. However Redemption IS better than god of war 3 and final fantasy as well as a lot of other games thats come out. Redemption is easily one of the better games this generation. Id also put inFamous 2 above God of War and Final Fantasy. inFamous proves that a superhero sandbox game can be amazing. Beenox should take notes.

So how far did you get in the game?

I have met a person who's played the game and has come out of it saying that it was one of the best games they have ever play.

and I'm not saying rdr wasn't a good game because it was but I can't think of one sandbox game that bets a liner game.

I would also like to add metal gear solid to that list of great games.

Maybe I'll get my friend to buy the first one then, lol. I keep hearing things about it, but never got to play even a snippet of it.

have you play final fantasy 7?

Have you played Red Dead Redemption? It's an AMAZING game. Possibly one of the best Rockstar games.

yes I have played rdr and undead nightmare.

And don't get the first uncharted get number 2 much better.

Oh im not arguing that its not a fantastic game, but your logic of a sandbox not being better than a linear game just holds NO water. I mean take a look at the meta critic scores for some recent sandbox games. Look at GTA IV's score. Look at Redemptions score. Look at the scores for inFamous, Fallout, Elder Scrolls, Assassins Creed. I mean the list goes on and on. All of those games are fantastic titles, ALL of them are sandbox. Rather a game is sandbox or not isnt what holds it back or makes it great. Crafting a good story with good gameplay does. We havent seen that in any recent Spidey titles, linear or not.

If I'm gonna start on something, it'll be with the first game. That's why I hate when people say "Start on Assassin's Creed 2 and not the first one"...hearing that just irritates me.

And RDR shows how a sandbox game can DESTROY a linear game.

but there not better then liner. You just said that uncharted is your fav. game then you go and say that my argument holds no water.

I'm just saying that there is no sandbox game that beats the elite liner games. think you have 20 extra decades worth of liner you just can't win the amount of great liner games far out ways the great sandbox games.

Just because he has a favorite doesn't mean a sandbox game can't be better, lol.

Uncharted just happens to be my favorite of this gen, but ABSOLUTELY a sandbox game can beat an elite linear game, thinking otherwise is ABSURD! I would put Redemption right up there with Uncharted. I think its just as well made as the UC titles.

I mean i just dont get how you dont understand that?

I do understand that you got one game one.

I have a whole list of games that changed the landscape of the gaming world and also are far older and still blow away over half the games made now a days. the ps2 until very recently sold enough units to be mentored and it's games still sell great. ps1 has one of the best library's of any system not a one of those games are sandbox.

You're not making any sense really, lol.

Those list of games changed the landscape, yes, but sandbox style games are becoming more and more popular and becoming more and more expected and they will change the landscape as well.
