Far From Home Spider-Man: Far From Home General Discussion and Speculation - Part 2

There's a video on youtube about how Spider-Man: Homecoming, while its a good film isn't really a great Spider-Man film. It contains swears though so I don't think im allowed to post lol.

I believe you are referring to HiTop Films.

If so, his views on the film and his Spidey material in general is outstanding.

i figured i'd put my 2 cents in about the MCU's adaption of Spidey, even though i already have before. Personally, as a Spider-Man fan, I'm not happy with the amount of deviation they've made from the comics and lore of the character. I understand they needed to change things to make it different, but it was literally for the sake of change and I just can't wrap my head around it. Now, I like Homecoming for what it is (Holland and Keaton are great), but it's definitely not the definitive Spider-Man film, if you ask me, and i guess that's okay but it bugs me because it could have been more than what it currently is. I just wish they had stayed closer to who the character is, and his surrounding characters. They didn't need to change as much as they have, but they did it anyway and I just don't get it. there are still things to enjoy, and I think Holland is great, but I can't help but wonder what it would be like if it was actually closer to the Spider-Man we all know. Peter kissing Tonys butt is something that has never really sat well with me, among other things too. To me, the MCU Spider-Man doesn't stand out much at all

as I said, I still like homecoming, but my issues with the MCU Spider-Man will always persist. For me, Spider-Man 2 (2004) remains the absolute definitive film adaption of the character by far, with Spider-Man (2002) right behind that. Homecoming is still much much better than those trashy ASM films though. ugh! I wish i could erase Marc Webbs 2 films from my memory

Very well said and I completely agree! I do enjoy TASM and find TASM2 average, but Garfield is still my favorite (live action) Spider-Man.

The changes, especially to the supporting cast is just mind boggling. Spectacular Spider-Man is exactly what the fans wanted and was the perfect template, but nope. Different for the sake of being different. I really enjoy Homecoming, but the changes still bug me

yup! Spectacular Spider-Man could have been the formula to follow, but they didn't for whatever reason. as for TASM films, i just could never get into them. I hated the portrayal of Peter and how they turned him into an a*****e, and just loads of other things. The fact that we got those films instead of Spider-Man 4 bothers me until this day. Then again, Sony was going to mess up Raimis vision for Spider-Man 4 unfortunately. If allowed to do what he wanted, we could have had another masterpiece like Spider-Man 2.

Spider-Man 3 was on TV last night, and I've got to say, in spite of all its flaws it brims with personality and fun. Unlike the recent Spidey stuff which is so... homogenized.

I'd honestly rather watch it than anything from Webb or the MCU stuff. Raimi just captured something magical and its never been replicated since.

Well, that's because Spectacular Spider-Man is the best Spider-Man ever outside of the comics. I mean, everyone knows that. I always said it was how they should have done...well, everything.

It has everything they wanted except for other Marvel heroes involved. I'm tired of hearing "Oh, he's young so by the (possible) 4th film, he'll be the Spider-Man you know and love!" Still won't change his supporting cast.

Spectacular and Spider-Man PS4 make me like Tom Holland's Spider-Man less and less

One thing I'm not a fan of is how much this Spidey relies on tech he didn't make, so much so that learning to rely on what he can do himself had to be a big part of his arc in his movie. I like Spidey with tech (especially like how his inventive side was handled in the PS4 game), but having all of it made by Tony Stark or Nick Fury is like a big "what's the point" when you already established he was capable of making his own webshooters out of foraged parts. Peter making things out of nothing is inspiring, Peter being given everything to succeed is less so.

The main thing about Spider-Man/Peter is how you can relate to him. I can't really relate to MCU Spidey.

This, this, and this! I still really enjoy Spider-Man 3 despite it's flaws and it was clear how much Raimi understood the character.

Very true. It really bothers me that nearly everything Spider-man has relates back to Tony Stark. I'm sorry to say this, but there seems to be this idea floating around these days that "MCU = accurate portrayal and everything else = faux marvel" and it's just not true. The MCU is great, dont get me wrong, but just because its the MCU doesn't mean it is always how the character should be.

Despite Sony's recent success with ITSV and even Venom to a degree, I still think Spidey's in better hands within the MCU. Not for accuracy, just for an overall better experience.

IMO, Marvel had a chance to give us the definitive movie version of Spider-Man...there's already 5 other films to take notes from. But, they failed to deliver. Tom Holland is great in the role. Keaton gave us, imo, the best Spidey villain onscreen thus far and Jake won't be too far behind or maybe ahead...but unfortunately much of the character stuff is not to my liking. I don't have contempt for this version, I still enjoy it, however it's severely lacking.

Spidey is in better hands now in my opinion, and i still haven't forgiven sony for the way they pretty much intervened with Spider-man 3, made it so that Raimi couldn't make a good story for Spider-Man 4, and already had a horrid reboot lined up in case he walked. With that being said, they also delivered a beautiful oscar winning animated Spider-Man film, which was better than homecoming in my opinion. Venom was stupid though lol.

I expect Far From Home to be a good film, with some good performances and humor, but overall I don't think it's gonna end up being "one for the ages" at all.

100% agree. Very well said. Another major gripe is this versions poor supporting cast. Ganke er, Ned is fine, but c'mon. Ant-Man has better supporting characters around him

Oh yeah, his live action films are in better hands now with Marvel steering that ship. I don't think many would disagree with that, I'm also in the same boat where I enjoy seeing Spidey in the MCU and I enjoyed Homecoming a lot but just find some of the choices they make not very good choices for the character and don't agree when some people say it's the definitive version, or the most accurate so far.

It seems like some of the changes are just changes for the sake of it, like the lack of mentioning Uncle Ben directly because he died on screen twice before despite being so important to the character's motivations. The speech Peter gave in Civil War was great and hammered home why he does what he does succinctly, that was good. I didn't like Tony's voice standing in for Aunt May and Uncle Ben in the heavy lifting scene in Homecoming. They didn't even need the voiceover in that moment when the imagery of the mask and reflection in the puddle said it all.

all of this!

And another thing I'd like to add. I really find it odd how it feels like this version of Spider-Man doesn't face any consequences for his actions, and if he does, it's not by much. Everything feels way too "this is fun, oh look at this". Even Aunt May finding out he's Spider-Man seems like no big deal whatsoever now.

Love the red and black suit but one nitpick -- I wish the red accent going around near the elbow area wasn't there and was just all black. That way the suit would mirror the USM cartoon (lame show, I know) with how the red just stops at the shoulders there a la football pads. If you catch my drift..

The black and red suit is just beautiful!

I'm mixed on some changes but overall am fine with MCU Spidey enough. Homecoming and Spider-Man 2 are tied as my favorite live action Spidey films. I like him a lot in Civil War and infinity War as well!

One thing that annoys me with the recent MCU Spider-Man movies is that he is always at some other places than Manhattan. Don't get me wrong, it's neat to see him in Europe and all and I get that it could get tiresome always seeing him at only one place all the time, so if the filmmakers feel their story should take place with him being on another continent, fair enough. However so far he has been in Germany, Queens, Washington D.C, space and Titan. He has been on Manhattan for a few minutes in Infinity War but that's it. I don't get people why some people and the filmmakers are so against the idea of him swinging through Manhattan, I mean it's such a big part of the character. I wanna see him swing through skyscrapers for once. Looks like he will judging from the Far from home trailer but I wonder how long that will last.

Yes to everything especially the rubble scene. The line in that scene from Stark made sense and was appropriate however I didn't like it. For one, like you said, the visual of the mask said it all and imo by itself would have made the moment resonate moreso. Imo, the motivation for Peter in that scene should not have come from Tony. Two, while a quote from Uncle Ben would've been ideal, it would have been out of place. Because there was only a small reference to Ben earlier in the movie when Peter is talking to Ned and nothing else. To now have an out-of-nowhere voice over from Ben imo would have been jarring to the scene. Third, both the comic and the adaptation of the rubble scene in TSSM were executed far better. That lessened the impact the scene should have made. I still enjoyed it for what it was, and maybe it's nitpicking but I don't care...this is one of the greatest moments in Spider-Man's history...it should have been utilized better.

Oh yes, as a film, Homecoming is enjoyable and rewatchable. I just don't agree with several of the changes and deviations.

Uncle Ben's absence from the MCU is pretty troublesome. I get we don't wanna see the origin story for a 3rd time, but it's such an important aspect to Spider-Man's character. Some reference to him here and there wouldn't have hurt Homecoming at all, I seriously don't understand the disdain of even mentioning him.
