Far From Home Spider-Man: Far From Home General Discussion and Speculation - Part 2

I feel like I'm the only one frustrated with MCU Spider-Man. Tom Holland is perfectly cast, and the MCU provided a perfect opportunity to give us a 1:1 adaptation of the source material. But instead, we're getting pointless deviations from the comics in an effort to modernize the story and provide something fresh after the 5 Spider-Man movies that preceded Civil War/Spider-Man: Homecoming. I just feel like “if it ain’t broke...”

Zendaya as MJ is Spider-Man’s John “Robin” Blake. It’s a slap in the face.

Trust me... You're not. A lot of us are and have problems with it

I don't think I'm as upset as some but yes, I agree. Tom Holland is excellent and I really loved the take on Vulture/Toomes and I'm willing to bet I'm gonna love the take on Mysterio. But yeah, the deviations...and the mostly crap supporting cast.

Look at how Spectacular modernized and diversified the supporting cast without making needless changes. Marvel had an opportunity to do the same and imo they blew it. Since we've not really had a movie that has given a faithful adaptation of the cast in 616, that would've made for something fresh for both us fans and the GA.

I think I love the fact that Peter doesn't feel like a loner or an outcast like he did in all previous five movies. He has friends, he has a life outside Spider-Man, the world around him feels much more rich and lively.

The only Pop I wanted to see was Mysterio, the rest can take a hike lol.

Yeah, his life is too good for a Peter Parker. The weight of his Spidey life hardly makes his Peter life more difficult. The Vulture reveal was about the only thing they tried. There are issues with the MCU's approach to Spidey that I don't think enough people are willing to acknowledge because generally other places on the internet/YouTube/Instagram I see people just fawning over Tom's looks, or obsessing because it's part of the MCU and has to be the most accurate thing ever by default.

Well, he is just starting as Spider-Man. There's plenty of time for his life -and future movies- to get complicated.

So Amazon and the Funko website lists
Michelle as "Mary Jane"

Sounds about right. Curious if at any point in Far From Home that she'll be referred to as Mary Jane or if they just stick with MJ.

For what it's worth I don't think that the changes are that big a deal. None of the MCU characters have been completely faithful to the comics. Spider-Man may be a farther deviation, but it's just a movie, and as a character, he is 100% Spider-Man. So the supporting cast is different. To me, that's just side dressing. Peter is the important one, and Tom has more than fulfilled that.

I'm just glad Marvel stuck to their guns and didn't change Peter's supporting cast like some were hoping. The GA love them, marvel couldn't care less if fans don't want them.

I’m not so sure we can measure how much the GA love them. Box office performance has nothing to do with his supporting cast. The importance of the cast in the success of these movies has to do with the hero and villain, and little else.

I actually like the actors playing “MJ” and Flash, but I think they both should’ve remained closer to the comics. They really are Flash and MJ in name only, unfortunately. Also whose idea was it to make Betty look exactly like Gwen stacy? I just don’t understand the logic behind these alterations.

I do genuinely like Ganke/Ned. I think he’s a nice addition.

Zendaya is not even MJ in name only. She's MJ in initials only. She's not even Mary Jane. Michael Jackson was also MJ. That doesn't make him Peter's MJ just because he has those initials. Michelle Jones shares absolutely nothing else in common with Mary Jane Watson.

Look at Superman. Clark Kent knows a lot of people with the initials LL. There's Lois Lane, Lucy Lane, Lana Lang, Lex Luthor, Lionel Luthor, Lena Luthor, Lillian Luthor. Is Lana Lang also Lois Lane because they're both LL?

Its funny how you can never know you have wanted someone in a movie role then the moment you see a picture of them mocked up as them you can't picture anyone else.

If the movie after Homecoming introduces Jameson this needs to happen.

I get what you guys are saying, but as far as these characters are likeable the GA won't care they don't look like their comic book counterparts.

I will go further, the character may have initiated in a comic book but his cinematic presentation, not the fifth artist and writer team take on them is what the general audience wants to see should they pick up another medium. In other words Marvel is now a movie studio that produces comic books

I don't care if Zendaya is Michelle, MJ, or PB&J. She works in the context of the film. That being said, she's no more Mary Jane than Peter is. Flash is the only character I would love to totally recast as a more classic version of the character. He's just an annoyance, honestly. Also, I hate that the Marc Webb movies are the only place where we got a Flash Thompson who was a bully, but also had a deeper level to him...in one film. Then he was completely forgotten. The Raimi movies give us classic Flash Thompson, but with only the surface layer of jock D-bag. MAYBE this film will give him some layers. Otherwise, I can already hear myself groaning every time he speaks.

Ahem. That being said, I still enjoy this version of Spider-man more than the others (except Spider-Verse).

Did I miss anything about Michael Keaton and this movie? He's not listed on IMDb anymore.

Could be they're trying to keep it under wraps, ala just a credits scene or, reports spoke too soon and he's not in it

i figured i'd put my 2 cents in about the MCU's adaption of Spidey, even though i already have before. Personally, as a Spider-Man fan, I'm not happy with the amount of deviation they've made from the comics and lore of the character. I understand they needed to change things to make it different, but it was literally for the sake of change and I just can't wrap my head around it. Now, I like Homecoming for what it is (Holland and Keaton are great), but it's definitely not the definitive Spider-Man film, if you ask me, and i guess that's okay but it bugs me because it could have been more than what it currently is. I just wish they had stayed closer to who the character is, and his surrounding characters. They didn't need to change as much as they have, but they did it anyway and I just don't get it. there are still things to enjoy, and I think Holland is great, but I can't help but wonder what it would be like if it was actually closer to the Spider-Man we all know. Peter kissing Tonys butt is something that has never really sat well with me, among other things too. To me, the MCU Spider-Man doesn't stand out much at all

as I said, I still like homecoming, but my issues with the MCU Spider-Man will always persist. For me, Spider-Man 2 (2004) remains the absolute definitive film adaption of the character by far, with Spider-Man (2002) right behind that. Homecoming is still much much better than those trashy ASM films though. ugh! I wish i could erase Marc Webbs 2 films from my memory

There's a video on youtube about how Spider-Man: Homecoming, while its a good film isn't really a great Spider-Man film. It contains swears though so I don't think im allowed to post lol.
