The Amazing Spider-Man Spider-Man Gets a Set of Parents and Another Villain

Oh my god...

Proto-Goblin (in one way or another) is a definate.

"The Proto-Goblin was a character who appeared in one issue of a Spider-Man comic ever, a Flashback issue (a stunt when Marvel told 'untold tales' of characters)," explains Badass. The link being, apparently, that the character's real name was Nels van Adder. "The basic story is that he was an employee who was tested on by Norman Osborn before Osborn became the Goblin. George Stacey plays a role in that story; the reveal that Peter's parents were spies came from another Flashback issue. Could Webb's Spider-Man be pulling heavily from a couple of weird 1990s comic books?"

Hmmm.

it sounds good if its proto goblin..... but then i think..... wouldn't that lead into hulk green goblin :(

I already said this before:

A prototype rarely reflects the finished project. Just because the prototype turns out one way doesn't mean that the finished project will turn out that way.

So, no, I don't think it will.

I don't really know if they'll use 2 monster'ish villains like this in one movie. I wouldn't be surprised if Nels Van Atter is just Nels Van Atter in name. If stillanerd's theory is correct I think there could be a cool conflict with Spidey being faced with having to save the guy who killed his parents or let him be killed by the Lizard, and save the Lizard at the same time.

I like the theorys that Van won't have powers, or become a proto-lizard monster. Plus it doesn't make sense that he has a wife. What is her part in all of this?

WHAT IF Rhys Ifans is actually playing Norman Osborn :wow:
Well, he doesn't really look like Norman Osborn at all. When the casting was first announced and we didn't know who he was playing, I thought either Curt Connors, Electro, or Mysterio.

What if it's really Van Halen?

Your right. :yay:
I guess I was just trying to include her in the proto-goblin theories.
I hope we can get some small plot details soon to put all the confusion to rest.

I really hope they avoid the parents being sceientists. That would pretty much screw Peter's story.

First, kiss goodbye all of his struggles to earn a living and fit in. If Peter is a legacy of successful sceintists, and especially if his parenst knew Curt Connors, then Peter would have an almost guaranteed job, help with school, and membership in the community of scientists. As written, Peter has to struggle to make any headway. This way he doesn't.

It also removes Peter's uniqueness. The original story makes Peter's scientific genius something that springs from his own mind and drive. Not so if the parents are scientists.

It also creates the obvious comparisons to Iron Man. Strak's father was an inventor, now Peter's parents are scientists.

Then, if we have the parents killed by some monster, that would pretty much drown out the impact of Ben's killing.

So this villian is made up for the movie? I haven't read any recent Spider-Man comics for a few years now and have no idea if he's a recent villian in the comics or not.

I just think it's fairly lame to make up a villain for a comic film when most superheroes have a large number of villians to pick from.

Any of you actually like this idea?

I dont know if this has been answered yet but no, he isnt an original villain. He appeared in the -1 issue of Peter Parker: Spider-Man in 1998.

He was a security guard at OsCorp before Norman became the Goblin. Osborn was testing his own version of the Goblin formula and the "Proto-Goblin", Van Adder, was the result. The Proto-Goblin stalked Osborn and killed several other security guards at Oscorp before he was taken down by Arthur and George Stacy. He escaped and hasnt been seen since.

If he is the Proto-Goblin, I wonder how they're going to make him look. He is such a minor character and his look isn't all that memorable to begin with. Not to mention I don't see Khan pulling off that typical extreme 90s character look.

But to be honest, even if we're talking obscure Spidey villains there are far better choices. To have this one issue appearance guy from the dark ages of comics be a baddie seems kind of lame. I hope this speculation turns out to be inaccurate.

I dont mind the addition of Van Adder, but I dont want him to be a major character. Norman testing the formula on someone besides himself makes more sense than to test it on himself. I appreciate the nod to comics continuity, too. After all, how memorable was Henri Ducard in the comics? Its not like "Henri" played a major role in Batman Begins, either.

Good point on that, we don't exactly know how big a role he has.

I am still not 100% convinced that we will get the Lizard in the first movie, but this does speak potentially of a villain to fill the first act while the Connors/Lizard storyline develops.

Other than that... not so sure about this.. IF this turns out to be the case.

I find it hard to believe that Sony would let the villain's name slip too, or one as close to the original source. Could be a stupid leak I guess.. or a on purpose mis-direction.

Van Adder sounds like a potentially interesting addition, if Norman Osborn is in the film.

We could have Osborn looking over a prototype for his Goblin outfit in one of the final scenes, ala The Joker card in Batman Begins.

This is probably what's going to happen in some way or form, hell THR let the cat out of the bag on Green Goblin being saved for the sequel in the article that confirmed Emma Stone's casting as Gwen and history has shown that THR is a very reliable trade.

I hope they don't go for the super spy parents thing. That's the one thing I hate most about the Spider-man mythology.

What if this proto goblin Norman creates ends up being Hobgoblin.Rhys Ifans is suppose to be the main villain. It says he is gonna be a proto goblin.
