Playstation Spider-Man (PS4) - Part 3

Can’t remember if I posted about it but yeah got the platinum earlier in the week after I got back from my trip last weekend. Bring on the DLC now. Also I’m still doing the secret photo ops I’ve got 40/50 so almost finished them.

I just finished all the individual crimes in the districts and made it to 100% completion, which surprised me since I still don't have every costume yet and am missing some upgrades. All I really have left to do is to find the remaining 15 or so secret photos that I'm missing and complete some more Taskmaster challenges to get enough tokens to finish off the suits and upgrades.

For the sequel, they'll almost have to open up the map a little more though, or add something new to what exists. Like being able to enter buildings, or the buildings interacting with the help of other Marvel characters that live there. Something new that they can build from what they already have.

They would receive so much flack if they just use the same map.

It will almost have to be a PS5 hardware to open up such a large map already along with unlocking other boroughs of New York.

For as big as some maps are getting for game I thing they should add more to it especially since you can traverse through it so quickly once you level up.

There's only so much you can do with NYC and the surrounding areas, what matters is the content of the map.

Now I feel this game had plently of content, but there's always room for improvement.

Yeah, to be honest part of me kept thinking ‘imagine how much fun a spidey game in Shanghai or Hong Kong would be?’

Man, I just love this suit.

Long time reader.

Never felt compelled to write anything on these forums until I finished Marvel’s Spider-Man for the PS4.

Grew up loving all things spidey. Games, comics, movies, and action figures. Most of how spidey is represented in all these forms of entertainment is solid and occasional does it reach preeminence.

But Marvel’s Spider-Man has reached a whole new level of sensation!

Slight spoilers ahead

From the exuberant opening to the melancholic ending. I can incessantly extol this amazing experience for days but my time is running short.

This is the definitive Spider-Man story.

Not only does it build on the lore and promise greater stories in the future but it is also its own contained story on the highest level of emotional complexity.

Dr. Octavius and Peter Parker make one hell of a show by slowly teasing and building up to their imminent epic battle. That was earth crushingly brutal to see their arc unfold, which is much thanks to the exquisite acting and writing!

This caliber of entertainment is better than most of the movies.

Final thoughts. This was the first time a video game made me tear up during the ending.

This game just made me feel very alive and connected.

This is entirely subjective as I have a very soft place in my heart for spidey and to finally really feel an adult version of this character go through some very very tough consequences is infinitely impactful.

Thanks for reading!

Cheers.

Been playing a lot today, mainly side missions. Finished a large majority of them.

As for the main story, I just left the lab and am about to have dinner with MJ, not long after the City Hall attack. I love the little details in the lab and how they evolve over time such as
Otto having a map of the Raft as well as the costs for each Six members new suits. Was a nice little touch. Whoever is getting the 1.5 million dollar suit is a lucky dude.

I'd give this game an 8.5/10. It's definitely the best Spider-Man game, but doesn't quite beat Arkham Asylum and Arkham City as far as superhero games go. For me it was an 8/10 until the final act for which I feel it deserves a slightly higher score. My main pros and cons are:

Pros

-Great story, world building, characters and writing. One of my favourite Spider-Man stories in a while. An extremely well written game. The final act is one of my favourites in gaming. All the characters are spot on except
MJ feels a little too much like Lois Lane with the journalism aspect.
Some of the characters might even be my favourite versions of them in this game, like for example
Doc Ock.

-Web swinging is great except when you dodge mid air and lose momentum, or when you don't gain as much momentum as expected after a free fall.

-The graphics and animations are great.

-The combat is surprisingly not an Arkham rip off. It's also really good.

-The voice acting is top notch.

-The boss battles are great from a cinematic point of view.

-New York truly feels alive and breathing.

-The music is truly amazing.

Cons

-The game is pretty glitchy and buggy. It's not as finely polished as the Arkham games. I got some glitches during cutscenes that took me out of the moment. The game crashed twice and I got some glitches that made me have to restart the game or leave a side mission.

-The pacing is a little off. While I get why certain characters get a certain amount of time and focus, I can't help but feel like the game didn't really gain speed until the third act. The slow build up did pay off however.

-I feel like there should be a less clunky way to use gadgets, like in the Arkham games.

-The game doesn't add much variety to the gameplay in encounters. Sure, some enemies block certain attacks, but some moves are pretty safe against all of them like the slide to kick from behind. There's way too little variety to the stealth sections, which feel too basic. Again, look at how the Arkham games vary things up and keep surprising you with gameplay mechanics. Same goes for enemy types. I also feel the boss encounters are a little disappointing from a game mechanics standpoint.

-While I did enjoy the open world content, they feel like a drag or chore at the end. I'd like one or two more villain based side mission with some mini story. I guess that's saved for the DLC.

-While I enjoy the combat, I have to say that seeing the same kicks at every basic combo gets a bit old quickly. I'd like some more animation variera to the basic combat.

All in all, a great foundation for a series. I'm sure the sequel will be even better.

Man, I just love this suit.

Once I unlocked that suit, I damn near used it for the rest of the game. The details and texture are superb, it's the perfect design for "evil tactical Spider-Man". I love it.

I'm untouchable! :D But admittedly, the Fisk goons are pretty easy to take down. Might have to try my luck later at the Demons and Sable Crew.

Oz! Haven't seen you in ages, how ya holding up?

I haven't finished the game yet so I'm holding out until I do before giving a review but so far I'm loving it!

As far as the glitches go and the freezes, I've heard this is a somewhat common issue that's been plaguing certain players/systems. Insomniac is aware of it and they're gonna correct that stuff in a patch.

I agree about the stealth mechanics and gameplay. Not only do I think it was better in Arkham but I think Beenox did a better job of it in the first ASM game.

I actually like how Insomniac programed the gadgets in terms of selection. It's definitely a learning curve but once you get it down, switching between the different gadgets becomes really efficient. Not sure how much you've experimented with it but you can bring up that gadget wheel at any time during combat even during the slow-mo finishers.

I'm excited to see what new elements or changes they make or add to the sequel.

Glad you enjoyed the game! 'Bout time we got a AAA Spidey title.

The only thing I truly hate in this game is catching pigeons as a mission.

Man, it's great to see that you're still here pal! I'm really happy to be here and talk to you again! I'm doing well, not much has happened since we last spoke. I'm working, playing some games, watching movies and so on haha! It feels good that our Spidey is in good hands now again! Off topic, but have you played God of War? In that case, what did you think about that game? And how's your life? :)

Glad to hear that your experience with the game has been free from glitches and that Insomniac will fix that stuff. It must be hard to make such a big game free from bugs and glitches so I don't really blame them haha.

I don't remember the stealth sections from ASM, but yeah, I think the stealth in this game wasn't given as much time and care as the rest of the gameplay. But that is expected given that this is their first shot at Spider-Man, the swinging, combat and story is of first priority to nail and they did a great job at that.

You're right that it the gadget wheel feels better to use after a while, but I also really like the shortcuts in the Arkham games. Since we're using the d-pad for other stuff in this game however, their solution might have been the best anyway.

Oh yeah! When I say this is a great foundation for a series, I mean that in a big way. It's a great game on its own. If they keep build on to this, fix some stuff and keep evolving the series, I think the next game is a real 10/10 contender. I can't wait to see where they take the story from here.

It's about time haha! I can't wait 'til you've finished the game to hear what you think about the whole thing. I think if you love this game so far, you'll love it even more later as the game gets better and better in my opinion.

EDIT: I see The Joker liked my previous comment as well. Great to see you here too man! Hope all is well with you too!

Have you done the Taskmaster bomb missions? Those were infuriating. I'm glad I'm done with that. The pigeons felt like vacations compared to the bombs.

Both infuriating but at least with the bombs, that was it, you had the bombs highlighted only and that was the agenda, with the f-king pigeons they would come up on the radar as you were trying to achieve something else and get involved with the tracking of them and that 'dramatic' music choice would kick in and distract you.

The bombs were probably the easiest ones for me.
Even at Ultimate level? That's always what I aim for because I want to unlock everything in the game. You have to find the best route and land perfectly everywhere while close enough to the bomb to press L1 + R1 before you even touch the ground and make sure you throw the bomb away at the direction you're planning to go next or you lose a couple of precious seconds.
That was frustrating.

Haven’t gotten there yet. I love swinging freely but controls don’t really allow for fast swinging. I’d hit a wall too and he’ll start to parkour.

Hey Oscorp. Long time no see. I'm doing good thanks. Same old, same old. Great to see you back. I haven't seen you actively posting in a Spidey topic for a long time. Glad to see you enjoyed the game. I loved it, too. Needs some polishing in certain areas, but overall a terrific game. Well worth the wait.

I just love what it did with my favorite Spidey villain. Never expected his role to pack the huge emotional punch it did.
