Star Trek Beyond - Part 2

Who is the new female alien-looking character? (excuse my ignorance :O)

No seriously, Jaylah is so obviously channeling her inner Rey there. Which is totally understandable. We all would love to be like Rey.

Her name is Jaylah, and she's being played by Kingsman's Sofia Boutella. And it would appear that she allies with the team to take down Idris Elba's Krall.

Oh and of course they'd use a shot of Sofia spin-kicking someone in the trailer, it'd make no sense not to. ;)

Yeah I kinda liked the Starfleet insignia gaping hole poster. The others though... Ugh. Earth will fall? Seriously?

And it didn't even make any sense as a tagline, once you saw the movie and what Khan's actual motives were.

Yeah, seriously. They should have skipped trying to hide the villain's identity and just have used "KHAAAAAANNNN!" as the tag line, lol.

Yea the Abrams movies really downplayed Bones' status as one of the main trio and made it all about Kirk/Spock (and bumping up Uhura).

That is something I did not like about the previous two films. Trek is about Kirk, Spock and McCoy and Bones was pushed into being a secondary character in favour of putting Uhura to the fore simply for the sake "diversity". And yet the only use they could make of Uhura was to be a girlfriend and nothing more.

I was hoping that with Pegg on the writing team and with his self proclaimed love of the franchise that he would rectify some of these errors. However, Pegg's own opinion's seen somewhat erratic - he says Marvel are "dumbing down" cinema and then says that he had re-write Beyond because it was too thoughtful and "Star Trek-y". And he seems to always want to be the centre of attention on set with pranks (and retelling the story over and over) and in group interviews. It has me worried that he has given Scotty an even bigger role in Beyond.

I hate being negative but every time I see mention of the movie I get the terrible feeling. I hope I am wrong though.

I actually thought that they used Uhura pretty well in ST 09. And I don't really have an issue with them beefing up her role (I've always been more fond of Trek when it's a true ensemble myself). But, if you're going to cast Karl Urban, then give him stuff to do for goodness sake.

Elba looks and sounds like an excellent Star Trek villain, a modern throwback type that fit very well under the Star Trek banner.

I wanna see this movie just for that

I know right! He should have been on there instead of Kirk on a damn motorbike!.:argh: And Spock should have been where Uhura is.

Before the the first Abrams Trek film Orci and Kurtzman released a video discussing Transformers and Trek and criticised some fans for worrying about McCoy's role in the film because Urban was not on the poster and Saldana was. As it turns out it was a sign of McCoy importance being reduced. And even more in Into Darkness.

Still, we shouldn't judge the film by the poster. I know the marketing is actually supposed to help us judge it but when has a poster ever actually been a sign of a good or bad film? :)

By all means, give Uhura, Chekov and Sulu something significant to do but surely they could have come up with something better for the only woman in the main cast than to be a guy's love interest.

And that is all she was. I don't see how that is making good use of the character.

No argument from me on that last bit about Urban. He is just awesome. ;)

What is their obsession with the bike stunt? I don't care that it's in the movie, but why do they feel the need to show it in so much of the marketing? I can't understand why they seem to think of it as such a selling point. Let's be honest here; I don't think there is any Trek fan in the world who was saying to themselves, "Man, you know what the next Trek movie needs? Some Excitebike."

What do you mean the bike stunt being in "so much of the marketing"?

Two trailers and a poster is hardly an obsessive use of the image. :)

Saldana/Uhura was really good in 09. But she was used so poorly in STID. Im fine with them beefing up her role too. But honestly I would like to see more of Urban. Again he was really good in 09 but I felt he wasn't used as well in STID

In what way do you think the character and actress were used well?

I really don't see it as she serves no purpose other than to be a girlfriend.

The Uhura role was not "beefed up" - she was simply given more screen time but there was no significance to it.

Well I use the term "beefed up" as in gave her more screentime.

I thought at least in 09 Saldana had some funny moments, she had good moments of showing her skills, and she actually had personality...STID she was just a love interest. The one time I remember she had to use her skills was so pointless

Thanks.

What race is she?

The women in the other Star Trek series (TNG, DS9, Voyager) had more of a role than just to be a love interest.

I have no idea their obsession, but it was worth it just for this post. :funny:

Yeah despite those things, this poster and the other poster are pretty damn good. Id hang them both on my wall. Paramount may have dragged their feet the past few months but the film's marketing material is coming together nicely. Certainly beats the hell out of STID's posters:

I like a couple of those, but yeah much better this time around.

Poor Lin. He wasn't thrilled when they focused on it in the first trailer. Probably going to get frustrated even more if marketing continues to focus on that one stunt.

Uhura being bigger on the poster than Spock, and Bones not being on it at all, but they have Kirk on it twice. Ugh.

I know right.

:down

Bones just keeps getting s*** on. I want my trinity.

Beefing up a role is not giving a character more screen time, it is giving a character something to do that is significant. More time on screen does not make a character important.

Yes, in the first film they made use of her skills in communication in one scene, however, wanted a female character to play a larger role and rather than make it about her ability as an officer they just made her a love interest. In Into Darkness she existed solely to service Spock's character. It is very odd considering that Abrams' female characters are never like that.

Sulu's brief appearance was at least of value to the story.

Exactly. One would imagine that after all these years since those shows that a Trek film would treat women better.

Sorry I'm lost on this one.

I don't get how people think that the marketing is focusing on one stunt?

I've talked to plenty of people about Beyond and note a single person has mentioned the bike jump. It is just on one poster and seen briefly in trailers.

And when and where has Justin Lin said anything on the subject?
