See, making money off it really, really puts it off of being a fan film, imo. If you are making it to make money, then you really are just stealing the IP.

From what I've read, another thing the Axanar guy was doing that pissed Paramount off was using the raised money to build some stuff that he wanted to use even after completing the ST fan film. He was basically exploiting the name of the franchise to fund his own production company.

That doesn't make you a bad nerd. Just a logical one. Hell I've had my urges to do fan films before. I wrote a wolverine short after hating X-Men Origins. I planned a Harvey Dent short until i saw The Dark Knight. But I always went back to my own stuff. Plus i didn't think i was doing them for the right reasons anyway. (they were more reactionary than anything)

The more details i hear the more i get where Paramount is coming from. This sounds less like fan fiction and more like competition.

I was thinking about doing something like this too. I was involved with a company that was making a Dragon Ball Z series. I eventually left when they didn't want to do original ideas and just make fan films

These Star Trek fan films are boring anyway. That one with Admiral Chekov (I can't remember what it was called) was very dull. I don't think it's so much the special effects or production but more to do with the very bland cast they assemble. I don't want to spend any time following their story. And the old Star Trek cast members are usually rather minor characters who have nothing else going on that they agree to guest star.

I was watching STID today on FX and geez, watching it, I just don't like this movie anymore. It just isn't good. I love the first film, as flawed as that is, but at least it was enchanting but here it takes all the flaws of the first and just makes them so transparent. Using Khan again aside which is dumb, just the tone, it just felt like so many put their hands on it and managed to completely suck all the ST-ness out of it that's a generic sci fi tentpole with ST slapped to it. It looks like the most expensive fan film ever. I know these views are nothing new, it just took a while to hit me personally.

See I also rewatched it and, I really like it. I really don't understand the hate personally. And of course they reused Khan, it was inevitable after the reboot (and lets face it, the ST films have been trying to find the "new Khan" for decades now anyway).

So, Netflix is going to be getting rid of the Trek films from streaming in July and I'm thinking of binging the films. Are they worth it? Full disclosure, I'm a casual sci fi guy who never watched the tv shows but loves the Abrams films and really really looking forward to Beyond.

I wouldn't binge them all, I'd maybe skip Search for Spock and probably Generations, and I'd definitely skip The Motion Picture, Final Frontier, Insurrection and Nemesis. Apart from those, Wrath of Khan, Voyage Home, Undiscovered Country, and First Contact are definitely worth watching imo.

I'm all for Paramount's new rules. The no drugs, alcohol, or profanity thing doesn't make sense - unless they just mean in excess rather than "keep it PG rather than PG-13" which I agree with for many properties and hate slash fiction. It's not something I think anyone should be paid for nor earn money from, if it's good and if you are fans money won't enter into it. If it's good you can get previous Star Trek cast members to be in it for free, I've been on sets for actual indie films that have hit theaters where the main cast actually weren't making money from it rather just a labor of love there too. If it's good, they'll show up to support it. I managed a virtual series for about four years, years ago, for a different IP and most of the points Paramount makes make sense and I'm puzzled they even need to be brought up. You don't own the IP - profiting off of it in any way shouldn't be involved period. That's always been illegal, it's weird some didn't take note of basic copyright laws.

I can understand the time limit and restricting a continuous story in concerns to Star Trek, but not something I want to see applied to other properties. With Trek it makes sense from a business standpoint because they could run into trouble of having a free streaming Trek show competing with the one they're developing now.

One can't skip the Search for Spock if they watch Wrath of Khan, because Spock dies in the latter, and TSFS shows how he is brought back to life. One follows from the other, otherwise if he gets to Voyage Home he'll be wondering why Spock is there again and why he's a bit confused.

Well, still better than the Twi'leks and their gross tentacled heads, I guess. Seriously in real life nobody would like the Twi'leks. Nobody. We would all be disgusted by them, and rightfully so.

I don't think it was besides a niche expectation just based on the iconography of him. Abrams and co. just took it too far. WOK (not the fault of the film) has become too sanctimonious to the point where people just can't let it go and move on. Abrams just knows how to hit greatest hits mode.

If you love the Abrams films for the characters and the world they inhabit then YES.

Be advised the first film is tonally different from the rest of the TOS films. It's also glacially paced (go with the Director's Cut if possible). Personally I love it and think Spock has a great arc, but if you hate it don't write off the rest of the films.

The general rule of thumb is that the even numbered films are better than the odds (except for X which was a bit of a dud). So if you find yourself wanting to shrink your list you can go with II, III, IV, VI and XIII. You can't skip III because it forms a loose trilogy with II and IV.

Also, "Space Seed" is the original Khan episode from TOS. It's not required viewing but you'll appreciate STII better if you see it. You may also like to see "Journey to Babel" as that episode featured Spock's parents (who make some appearances in the films).
