Why does a scene that has stood for 28 years as film perfection and the emotional climax of arugably the best film trilogy ever made, need a new dimensional and callback to a mediocre film that people make fun of?

Do you not understand what you are saying? It is like adding dialogue to the finale of The Good, the Bad and the Ugly or 2001.

Its not that big of a deal man, Its a minor change and quite frankly george can do whatever he wants, he owns star wars. Im content with this release and Ill tell you this much you will never see a release on bluray with just the original untouched movies. The changes are small and overall dont derail the plot of any of the 6 films. I have no problems with these changes, one line of dialogue from a scene doesnt ruin an entire movie for me, its what 5 seconds max? It would be different if lucas cut the movie movies entirely different.

Some of you are making me feel really old. I was only 5 when my mom took me to see ... the original Star Wars.

Yes, I still only refer to A New Hope as Star Wars.

Me too. And it will always be "the first movie" no matter how many times my friends' kids try to correct me and say it's part 4. :oldrazz:

I was about 4 when I saw the first movie, I was 6 when I saw Empire (and was so utterly traumatized by "I am your father" that I refused to believe it was true for 3 years), and I saw Jedi on opening day, which was a month before I turned 9.

Glad to know I'm not the only senior citizen on this thread. :woot:

He's saying he's OK with it and he really doesn't mind the change Lucas made.

It's not that hard to understand. You don't like it, don't get the blu-rays.

I'm not a big fan of most of these changes either, but hell yes I'm picking up my box set tonight. Been looking forward to it all week. I can think of far more important things to fly into a rage over.

Have you ever seen the original ANH? Because what we have now is the Michael Jackson version. Far more then five seconds. It has 2004 fx, over 1997 fx over the original 1977 fx. It is even like Lucas went back and fixed the ugly that was the 1997 additions. He leaves them as they are and plays with other bits, leaving the first half of the film all over the place. It looks... weird and hurts the film.

He has made ANH a lesser film by adding the Jabba scene and having to have Han walk over his tail. By including the ridiculous edit of the Han/Greedo scene. How badly the scenes are done just draw attention to them. Same with Hayden Ghost, the new Emperor and the added bits to the finale of ESB.

This has never and will never be a six film trilogy. It has always been two separate trilogies under one name, with completely different film styles. They barely share the same characters and actors.

I use to get over this, but it is one thing after another. They can never just be. Every release these films get tinkered with. Something always has to be played with and not just in the background. Why would anyone reedit and play with John Williams score decades later? Just get rid of actors?

Every time I watch Empire and hear Boba "talk", it annoys me for the rest of the movie. Not only does he not sound right, the edit is completely unconvincing and badly done.

But probably what pisses me off most is that I have to get these. If just to have a watchable transfer of TPM and to see the finale's of SW and ESB in HD. I just wish I could watch whatever version I wanted. Whether it be the original or the Special Editions.

George Lucas and any other director cannot afford to listen to the fans...because we are stupid and fickle...we love things one moment and hate them the next.
Example.
Heath Ledger is announces as Joker
Fans not too happy with it....Brokeback Batman is coined
First pic of Ledger Joker arrives online
Fans not too happy with it...The Crow ripoff becomes the catch phrase
Movie comes out and he is declared the 2nd coming of Joker.

Directors dont listen to fans...they listen to their hearts and sensibilities. They dont make movies based on what the fans would like...they make movies based on what they would like to see.

I know posts about whining about the whiners dont go over well but to be honest it seems pointless because a) You are never going to see the OT on Blu ray which shouldnt be a surprise because Lucas favors his vision or b) He's doing what he did with DVD and we will see the OT on Blu ray.
At some point its time to move on because if you dont then you are hurting the rest of the Star Wars fans. You play into the image of the guys who cry out that their childhood has been raped. I reluctantly tell people I am a Star Wars fan because I get that look "Please dont go into a tirade on how Han should have shot first or how Jar Jar raped your childhood."
Star Wars is bigger than "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO", its bigger than Jar Jar, Its bigger than pink light sabers.
Star Wars is about discovering that magic in the world...about good vs evil...light vs darkness.
Luke discovering the force mirrors our discovery of Star wars...an old man with a beard showed us there was something bigger in the universe...something bigger in ourselves...and as long as we control our emotions...let go of the hate...let go of attachments....dont give into dispair and disappointment then the force will be with us always.
Anakin couldnt forget his attachments...he loved his mother. His mother was captured and killed...the person who represented his childhood taken away from him...and it started his path to the dark side.
We must let go of our attachment to the OT or you'll take the path to the darkside and then you'll grow to hate this wonderful film series.

Let go of your hate

Then why is he still playing with them? Do you not see the complete contradiction in what you are saying? If Star Wars is that grand, it would be able to stand on its own without all this tinkering. Was he not listening to his heart or sensibilities when the films were originally made? How about Kershner?

The one who can't let go is Lucas. He can't stop messing with these films. Seriously, how many directors do this and to this scale? Is there another example? Still people aren't asking him not to play with them. Same with Scott and his various edits of Alien, Kingdom of Heaven and Blade Runner or Spielberg's Close Encounters. All people want is the chance to watch the originals in the newest medium, just like the Blade Runner and Close Encounters releases.

While Spielberg continues to make films, Lucas hasn't moved past 1977. Maybe that is why he Spielberg is able to let go?

On the ET SE: Spielberg said he let the immense criticism from parent groups after the theatrical release of ET get to him, which is what prompted the guns being taken out and the removal of the penis-breath line. He admitted that was a mistake and that he realized after the fact that changing the movie was “robbing the people of their memories of the movie.” He had a very hard time with that and said he confirmed what he told me in our interview that you won’t see any more digital tinkering in future releases of his films.

because Lucas is making these movies closer to his vision

Does any of the directors mentioned own the rights to the movies...No
Ridley Scott doesnt own Alien or Kingdom of Heaven or Blade Runner.
Spielberg doesnt own E.T. or Indiana Jones.
Any changes they want to make to their respective series have to go through the studios.
Lucas being his own man and not doing what people tell him to do or what directors are expected to do is how we got Star Wars in the first place.

That is your argument?

And I am sure Spielberg has a say. Why do you think he has said there will be no more tinkering with his films?

And I want to say that Spielberg owns the rights, or at the very least partial rights, to ET. He produced and directed it, and the film was made in conjunction with his own studio Amblin Entertainment and Universal.

Because of how badly edited it is. It is ugly when it was perfectly fine to start with.

Also I have no problem with you being fine with it. That doesn't mean that what has been done doesn't affect the films.

no my argument is this...George Lucas is going to do what ever he wants with or without your approval...being mad about it isnt going to change a thing
You dont have to like them...its your right...but he's gonna make the movies the way he wants to....regardless if Spielberg or Tarantino or Nolan do it

:highfive:

so are there any new new changes that improve the film at all? I heard they fixed the light saber effects for one. anything else?

Dude im just not that upset or offended about it. I got my blurays im happy. Who cares if han shot first, end of the day greedo is in the ground.

Pretty much my feelings as well.

Do I like the changes? No
Can I live with them? Yes

The changes don't upset me enough that I'll deny myself the pleasure of watching my favorite saga on Blu Ray.

You know what would be really, really cool? Is if everyone who b****ed and moaned about the Blu Ray changes... didn't get the Blu Rays! So simple it's surprising no one has thought of it yet.

^ Oh we aren't going to buy them.

You know, for once, I thought every single Star Wars fan actually realized how crazy Lucas is, because of his constant fixing, and messing with the series....but I was wrong.

It also bugs me that Star Wars fans can't seem to understand why we're upset, and they call us "fickle" and all that other ********. Which is totally false.

I DO NOT NEED TO POST A LIST OF FIXES for the trilogy like some do. I dont care. I'm not asking to erase the prequels, or add **** to the OT. All I want, is remastered, unaltered, OOT on Blu-Ray. Not one thing more, not one thing less.

I think that's what everyone who's fed up with Lucas wants. I didn't realize it was such a crime.

And yeah, blah blah, "stop whining, *****ing, ranting blah blah". Well, we're frustrated. Sometimes you need to vent. It's a human thing to do. YOU dont think so, because you're fine with all this, and will accept anything he does. Which is fine. But some people aren't.

I'm curious as to when he'll finally be satisfied on move on. Should we expect even more changes come 2018?

I can't believe people are so surprised he keeps making changes. You look back over your older work and you see stuff you wanna change, simple as that. Even if others don't think it's justified, he does apparently.

He'll be satisfied when no shred of the OT as it existed exists anymore.

I honestly dont think he will stop... he'll be at deaths door, still worsening the movies. oh well. pity.

Yeah... and how many other directors are doing this to their work? Can you name anyone who keeps revising their work to the point that it has become a running joke? Only it's no longer a joke.
