State your opinion a character - Part 1

I LOVED Venom back in the 90's. From his first appearance through around the time of Maximum Carnage. That was the same time he started getting all the minis and I actually liked a few of them but then it went downhill. I liked Lethal Protector, the Madness, the Enemy Within, and later Separation Anxiety. The Exile Returns during the Clone Saga was decent. After that I didn't like anything with him and lost interest in the character. The final nail for me was when they started drawing him as some blown up blob monster instead of the well-defined monster he originally was.

So basically I loved him until around The Madness/The Enemy Within, minis when he became just alright. Then I grew to not care anymore when Ramos first drew him and everyone else picked up on his style.

He's an idiot, other than wanting to kill Spider-Man I don't see a reason to consider him a villain

So, other than him wanting to murder someone and having committed other murders toward that end, you don't see him as a villain. Got it ;)

that ^%$# Brock became a bad guy because Peter Parker disgraced him at the Bugle?!?!!? hahahaha Man! come on! Throwing you in Nazi concentrating camp ,separating you from your family and ultimately destroying everything you loved i can see! Getting thrown off the Bugle?!?!? Hahahaha just go to work for the planet! Venom has never been anything but all style and no substance!

If only Thor had taken the time to show Spider-man the proper costume creating machine on Battleworld, we'd have never had to endure that Bizarro-Spider-man Wannabee.

:argh:

Weak against sound and flame. What is this? DC?

YES!!!!! You sir are a genius!! now *THORem i would buy!

a black thor suit would be hella cool and thor would have beat that &^%$ to death when it got outta line!

I think Venom is one of those guys that gets unfairly hated due to being created in the 90s. Yeah he was really created in 88 or 89, but he rose to prominence in the 90s so he gets some extra hate. Part of that is the comic fandom's hatred for all things 90s. Another part is being written poorly. When I went back and read the issues of Venom's creation and debut, he was very well written. It was fun to read about him, and not just from a nostalgic standpoint. He was a very obsessed guy that wanted to **** with Peter slowly before he killed him. He was like a horror villain in comic form. In fact, it reminded me a bit of when Green Goblin and Spidey first got into it. GG stalked his ass and found out who Spider-man was, and after that you had this feeling that he was always lurking in the shadows. Venom captured that well, but they never should have turned him into the Lethal Protector and all that. He should have been pure evil and focused on Peter. Yeah he's the victim to bad writing, but as a concept he's very good.

I love quite a bit of s**t from the 90's. Starman. Moore's WildCATS. The first parts of Planetary and Authority. Ellis' Stormwatch. Heroes 4 Hire. Thunderbolts, Waids Cap, etc.

No, it's not 90's hate. Venom, (and all symbiotes) suck. :o

No, YOU suck! :argh:

Also the said truth is that a lot of these kids reading comics nowadays never heard of Planetary or Astro City. With their hipping and the hopping and the pipping and the popping. They don't know what the JAZZ is all about! You see!

Ok, he's too dumb in an evil way

The Globe actually, and he wasn't supposed to be fired after what was revealed in many papers in the city before the truth was revealed

This just doesn't make any sense. He's a sadistic murder, and you consider him to barely be a villain?

Agreed.

To me, Brock's motives don't really matter. Did Michael Myers need a good reason to hunt down Laurie Strode in John Carpenter's Halloween? I'm not necessarily saying you're wrong, just that your argument is missing the point of the character entirely. And let's be honest, the original motivations of Green Goblin and Doctor Octopus were just as terrible.

Venom is actually stronger against flames than Spider-Man is, for your information. And does a weakness to flame make The Thing or Alien bad villains?

Hmmm but doc ock and green g was also created when the average reader was about 5 years today readers for the most are well above that( well maybe not me hehe) complex noral issues are what makes for great characters( I am probably one of the few people on earth never to see halloweenjust for that reason) let's see I feel like killing somebody today ! That can work for a while but afterwards. People crave more. Kinda like dating a supermodel its fun for awhile but you. Can only take so much " sex in the cityL and you are out! Hehe.......oh and I so agree with anubis some books in the 90ks rock! Venom just sucks! Hehe

I still like Venom's earlier stuff personally, but like a lot of you said he just got abused and wasted. Could be good again though imo. Anyways, what's your opinion on...

Shang Chi

Eager to see where Brubaker's going with the character, I think there's a lot there to be mined and I think he has it in him to tell it well.

Especially if they could get Aja and Hollingsworth on board... :oldrazz:

I've been surprised the Quesada led Marvel U has really neglected him as much as they have. Nice to see him pop up in Secret Avengers and Spider Island

One of the best characters
It was more interesting when he was the son of Dr. Fu Manchu

I like the fact that he's just a martial artist... No radar sense... no heart of the dragon magic fist powers, no super soldier serum. Just pure skill. I also like the fact that we have a kung fu master who isn't a white guy, or rather a practitioner of the martial arts that actually comes from the culture where the it originated. I don't have any problem with white guys knowing kung fu, I'm not Japanese but I'm taking Kendo right now, but it is nice to have at least one bad @$$ martial artist who actually is Chinese .

Boring as all f***. At least Iron Fist has his mystical chi thing. This dude is just Bruce Lee without royalties. There's a very limited amount of stories you can tell with a guy like that in a world where people can shoot lasers from their ass, and some of the stories turn out terrible anyway, like his recent Secret Avengers stuff. I swear, if Shang Chi did have a power, it'd be to turn Captain America into a murderous a**hole with the greatest of ease. Every time he shows up, Cap switches from demanding minimal casualties and consoling Beast when there was absolutely no other choice besides killing a few Shadow Council guards to condoning Shang Chi's blatant murder of everyone in sight and even jumping in alongside him. F*** Shang Chi. Hard. :o

agree!
MOKF ROCKS! Him and Fist are one of the best things to come out the 70's kung fu craze, well that and the song "kung fu fightning" i love that thru training and Persverance dude is probably 1 one the greatest martial artist in the MU, able to hold his against anybody and without powers... i love cats like that!plus he hasnt never been downgraded to just a stereotype.Shang -chi rocks like Bruce lee baby!

I agree with this, but I LOVE Bruce Lee, so if they used him in interesting ways I'd be cool with it.
And I disagree with your notion that since he doesn't have powers he can't fit in the MU. After all, Black Widow, Hawkeye, and tons of other characters don't really have any significant powers but end doing fine in the MU anyway (even getting on the friggin Avengers somehow).

I think I've only really read one thing with him in it.

I don't really have an opinion.

I do think he's overrated as a fighter, and Richard Dragon would kick his ass. :o

Who's Richard Dragon?
You can measure his skills on one read of him?
