Sci-Fi Stranger Things (Netflix) - Part 1

Hype is reaching exponential levels!

As much as I love Drummer, it might finally be time to change up my avatar. Stranger Things rules the summer.

I popped in my Stranger Things and Stranger Things 2 blu rays for the first time to do my rewatch. And while the picture is great (better looking that Netflix and I’m not even one of those videophile types and my TVs aren't top of the line or anything) the sound is terrible. I tried on both my TVs and I have to turn the volume really high compared to any other Blu Ray, DVD, or anything I stream.

So that’s kinda lame. Still will buy ST3 if that ever comes out

All the runtimes for you guys to prep yourselves:

On an already busy Memorial Day Weekend on top of watching Kenobi's first two episodes, it's gonna take me forever to watch those 7 episodes. I'm gonna be dodging spoilers through next week. :csad:

They're really dumping most of the season on Friday then. Not sure why they'd split it up that way structurally. Did the Duffers plan it this way or was it all Netflix?

In the middle of s2 in the rewatch, in still surprised Joe Keery and especially Noah Schnapp aren't bigger stars.

Not that they're hurting for roles, but Schnapp is for sure the 2nd best if not best of the young actors after Millie Bobby Brown. Surprised he didn't get an Emmy or at leat GG nom. And Keery is so effortlessly charming.
Both of them decent looking guys. And again I know they have roles coming in but I thought they'd be where Millie Bobby Brown or Finn Wolfhard are at.

EDIT: An it could be a personal choice. Not everyone wants to be a star and I know Noah Schnapp got into college and stuff

Keery's getting there. He had a significant role in Free Guy.

Finished my rewatch. First time watching season 3 since it aired. Pretty much the same feeling. Still really good, but not on the level of 1 and 2. The whole evil Russians under the mall story is a bit kooky and yes I’ve heard the copium fan defenses of “It’s the 80s so they were making it goofy like it was in the 80s” but that doesn’t hold water to me. I also think Harbour and Ryder while good were not as well acted throughout the season. They too were a lot goofier. Especially Harbour. He did a lot of overacting in a comedic way and it just felt really different than how it was before. But in any case, it’s still good.

Final Predictions for Season 4 as a whole before part 1 comes out tomorrow (keep in mind I havent watched any of the trailers or read anything about season 4)
  • El will turn evil. They’ve been hinting at it with the Dark Phoenix references
  • One of the main cast will actually die. I think Jonathan just because he kinda hasn’t had much to do since season 1.
  • The main theme will be friends drifting apart. That’s kinda obvious with the whole growing up thing
  • The Upside Down will be fully revealed as an alternate universe where the heroes failed and the Mind Flayer took over
  • Steve will get the stuffing beat out of him again
  • Mike will still be a whiny brat (he fell off after season 1. But that’s a different convo)
  • Hopper will be brainwashed or have some sort of Manchurian Candiate thing
  • I predict the main flaw being that there are too many characters. You can kinda see it happening already with season 3

Have off work tomorrow. Have my Eggos. And I’m an early riser so I shall be watching this season probably within the day.

Got a new season of Stranger Things, new seasons of Atlanta, new season of Better Call Saul, an Obi Wan miniseries with McGregor, new Pusha T album, new Kendrick album…been a good year for entertainment. All I need is a new Frank Ocean album and I’m set.

Maya looks alot like Kelly Reilly's character, Beth, on Yellowstone.

Immediate thoughts after finishing Part 1. Might post more in detail thoughts later on this weekend:

Still good. Great Action. Impressed they can up the scale so much and still keep generally the same quality. For sure was the most violent season so far. But as I predicted way too many characters and storylines. Pacing was really off

Also they really need to cut it out with the use of smash cutting to black. It was pretty annoying and it seemed like they kept trying to trick viewers that it was the end of the episode

And very unfortunate timing with what they filmed and the release coinciding with the Uvedale shootings. Not that it offended me, but when I saw that disclaimer before the first episode I thought "That's nice of them to do" but then I the first 5 minutes passed and I was like "Ah that's why"

EDIT: I see now that there are only 9 eps this season. The first 7 already released. Why did they divide it into Pt 1 and Pt 2 like that? Other than to squeeze more subscription dollars out of people

EDIT 2: And heads up, the Wikipedia page for season 4 spoils a pretty big twist. Not even in the episode descriptions. So be careful about that

Premiere was basically a repeat of the Season 3 premiere. They really need to change up the formula.

Don't see how the premiere is any more formulaic than any other season premier for anything other than maybe Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul

I just learned before watching the new season that Robin is Uma Therman and Ethan Hawke's daughter. Now all I hear is Uma Therman's voice when she talks. That was quite surprising.

I didn't understand what actually happened with
Hopper's foot and the chains. What was done to his ankle to slip off the chains. He seemed to run and walk fine when escaping.

Also, Vecna. Holy effing crap.
up to episode 6, I had this *strange* idea that Vecna and Hopper looked similar.

Or was it just me???

Loved the season so far, it is my favorite season (I dare to say). There were a few too much moments and characters but I loved it.

Started S4 and its really making me want a Nightmare on Elm Street revival/reboot.
Aye. A lot of homages to the franchise in this (and not to mention how similar to Freddy Krueger Vecna was with his intentions) which was great to see. I actually wouldn't mind the Duffer Brothers handling a revival sometime in the future.

I remember when the trailer came out and people were speculating that
Vecna was going to be Billy, which I'm glad wasn't the case. The Creel son plot twist was genuinely surprising and welcomed.

Another thing I have to give praise for this season is that despite the length, I never felt any of the episodes dragged on or felt overly long.

Just finished the first episode. Liked it, didn't love it. Certainly really curious as to where this is all going to go and play out. From the small glimpses of new characters, not really a fan, but I'll wait and see.

I veritably agree that, at least this episode, made full use of its runtime. I didn't think anything was padding for the sake of padding, it was all important. If anything it could've been a little longer. Hope that's the case going forward.

Also, this show's production continues to blow a lot of these streaming shows out of the water. It just feels so refined at this point.

Oh, that was SO good! And I really didn't see that coming.

Question: have we seen 001 in season 1?

Vecna was going to be Billy, which I'm glad wasn't the case

I have to agree with that! It would have been one of those "too much" moments, for me. I thought that Vecna was some sort of evil Hopper, from the Other Side - as if they all could have an evil persona there... - specially when Hopper tells *Enzo*
"I Was Wrong This Whole Time. I Wasn't Cursed. I Am The Curse."

Hopper reveals that he and others were exposed to hazardous materials and many experienced either stillbirths or children with serious health problems. As fans know, Hopper's daughter was terminally ill with cancer, and he apparently blames himself for her death.

Umm, @MissMarvelous , you really might want to spoiler-tag those posts of mine you quoted. Other folks in this thread haven't seen Volume 1 fully yet. :nrv:

Well finished all the episodes they gave us. Splitting it really doesnt make sense since this isnt the last season but....yeah definitely a good season. Feels more in line with S1 in quality.

The Russia storyline though...that went on way toooo long

I think this was the best season since season 1. It was clearly inspired by Nightmare on Elm St and It. My only issue is that there were just too many storylines going on. You had:

• Kids solving the mystery of Vecna
• Mike, Will, and Charlie out in the desert
• El trying to get her powers back
• Jocks trying to find Eddie
• Joyce and Murray trying to get to Russia
• Hopper trying to get out of prison

The last two felt completely disconnected from everything else and dragged the season down.

Mike, Will’s, and Charlie’s story felt superfluous as well.

The strength of the kids looking for Vecna, and Vecna being a good villain, is what saved the season.

Okay, I’m about halfway through this batch of episodes and I’ve gotta say…

I just don’t give a **** about the Hopper/Joyce stuff.

Like, obviously, you don’t want to lose Harbour and Ryder, but my level of enthusiasm for their material vs. what the kids are up to is pretty lopsided.
