Sci-Fi Stranger Things (Netflix) - Part 1

Am I the only one who didn't care much for Will's coming out scene? Having pretty much the entire cast sitting before him awkwardly like an audience while he does this huge monologue. Compare it to Robin's coming out scene which felt more genuine between her and Steve, and way better acted too. I think Will's should have been toned down to a private scene between Joyce, Jonathan, and his three best buds from S1.

I didn't have a problem with the scene itself but it felt out of place, like it should have happened sooner. I didn't really have an issue with anyone else being in the room apart from Kali (no reason for her to be there at all, she could have excused herself), Murray (he's been used far more sparingly this season so he's not as annoying as he was in 4 but how well could he possibly know Will? Get out of there), and Robin's girlfriend (she's cool but it's not like she had to have known Will much at all before that day). Steve seems like he's the least close with Will among all the kids but I'll give him a pass since he's hung out in their circle long enough. Nancy's been around Will long enough via Mike to be there, plus he's been living at her house for the last year. Robin absolutely makes sense to be there since, like Steve, she's hung out in their group and she encouraged Will to be himself in the first place this season. I'm just glad the whole room didn't join in on the group hug at the end of the scene. :o

But to be honest, I was way more invested in Max waking up and Lucas being there at the beginning of the episode. Noah Schnapp just isn't on the same acting level as Sadie Sink and Caleb McLaughlin.

I actually liked it but it went on for too long and he was dragging it out. Like the world is about to end; just spit it out and lets move on to working on defeating the big bad
 
That Will scene demonstrated there are WAY too many characters. Not only has the show become too convoluted, but they also have like a gazillion characters to follow. They even brought back the teacher!
Look, I still like the show for what it is, it still has some nice horror elements, it has a great character dynamic between Dustin and Steve (the high point of any episode) but I need this to end. It has become like a giant Marvel shlock with the big bad with a plan to end the world and all that crap.
Whatever they do in the final episode it doesn't matter, I think they really missed their step with this final season.
 
I don’t understand the convoluted complaints. It seems pretty straight forward to me *shrug*. I mean, there’s plenty of exposition to explain it all lmao.

Really enjoying Season 5, but not quite as much as Season 4. I do agree that there’s plenty of fat that could have been trimmed off, but a lot of the hate the show gets feels unnecessary.

As for the Will coming out scene, I thought it was better than the online chatter led me to believe it would be. I would have preferred a more personal coming out to his inner circle, but that was the most obvious misstep to me. In the context of the story and the way they laid it out, I thought it was fine. It would have been nice to have it happen earlier, but for the narrative reasons they chose it makes sense for it to happen when it did. If anything, I’m just not a huge fan of Noah’s acting ability. It’s been pretty mid imo.

There, right there, is one of the problems. There shouldn't be exposition after exposition scene. Hence, it is convoluted.

Extra exposition doesn’t make it convoluted…if anything, a lot of the extra exposition could be trimmed without impacting the plot or making it hard to follow. It’s a weakness of their writing in recent seasons.

I rewatched Season 1 for the first time quite recently, and it's shocking how much more interesting it was.
There was a whole subplot about Will's body being a decoy dummy that I completely forgot about. It was the kind of horror/creepy 80's stuff that is sorely missing.

I would be interested in a contemporary story. Someone getting hold of Brenner's research and restarting it now. Perhaps doing a Aliens type thing with a unit of marines and scientists exploring another dimension and the creatures that they encounter
 
I'm going to look back at this show as one of the biggest to drop the ball as it went along. It's not horrible, but it just isn't as gripping as it was back when it first came out. A lot of elements this season feel incredibly rushed, out of place, and thought up of at the last moment which would lead me to believe that the show's storyline and conclusion was not thought out/as cohesive from the start as it may have been claimed. Hope the finale is decent. Still waiting for a handful of deaths to occur as we've gotten nothing so far.
 
For me the big gaps between seasons was not helpful. This is a show that benefits from a big binge.
 
The long wait was never going to help but that was out of their control. In a different world where Covid and the 2023 strikes never happened, season 4 probably would have been out in 2021 and this final season would have come out two years ago.

It is interesting, because I binged seasons 1-4 over the course of the past year and a half and now am watching 5 as it comes out. I think that you are onto something as I thought seasons 3 and 4 were the weakest of the bunch, whereas a lot of people loved those. I really see where if you were having years of breaks between seasons, that perspectives would be very different.

Personally, I have liked season 5 a lot.

Episode 7 specifically though? The show is indeed overstuffed but there's been plenty of loudmouths on social media about Will being gay. Which is nothing new either, I'm assuming they just weren't paying attention in season 4 when it was first made clear.

Even in Volume 1 I thought they shouldn't have killed off Dr. Brenner in S4 and it should have been him in that role as the overarching human big bad. I love Linda Hamilton but unless she has some unlikely grand finish to her arc in the finale, she's been wasted here.
