CDC Closes Labs After Exposing Employees to Live Anthrax and Bird Flu

lvwlty70nnofn9gll7p3.png

The Center for Disease Control is closing its anthrax and flu labs after two accidents that could have exposed employees and the public to disease. "Shipments of all infectious agents" are going to be halted, too. The screw-ups, one of which was just reported today, weren't minor.

Last month, 75 CDC employees were possibly exposed to live anthrax bacteria. They handled anthrax samples without protective gear because they thought the bacteria was dead. CDC director Dr. Thomas Frieden explained to The New York Times that "when you work with [anthrax] day in and day out, you can get a little careless. The culture of safety needs to improve at some C.D.C. laboratories."

Another accident, just reported today, involved CDC employees accidentally contaminating a normal flu sample with H5N1 bird flu and sending it to the Department of Agriculture. As an added bonus, last week CDC employees found leftover smallpox virus samples from the 1950s in a closet.

Dr. Frieden told the Times, "These events revealed totally unacceptable behavior. They should never have happened."

I get no matter what job you do after a while it gets mundane and you start going threw the motions so to speak but the last place I want that happening is the freaking CDC. They are lucky nobody got killed yet

Sleeping Homeless Woman Dies After Driver Parks Car on Top of Her

zmxbbv0kzrilwphnp1m4.jpg

Henrietta Regina Dickson, a 55-year-old homeless woman, was killed in St. Petersburg, Fla. this week when a driver unwittingly parked her car on top of her unconscious body, pinning her underneath.

Police found Dickson's body in the condo complex parking lot the following morning, when a resident saw her hand sticking out from under the car. She had apparently either fallen asleep or passed out in a parking space.

The driver, Fathima Masud, will not face charges. According to police, she heard a bump when parking, but found only Dickson's bag when getting out of car. "When she looked, it was a large tote bag full of things, full of clothing, and other items. She just figured that's what she hit," said Yolanda Fernandez of the St. Petersburg police.

Dickson apparently had problems with drugs and alcohol, and became homeless when a friend she was staying with kicked her out for coming home drunk and belligerent. Her brother David offered a remembrance to the Tampa Bay Times:

"She was always the most popular and beloved of all of the siblings," said her brother David Dickson, 58, who lives in Chicago. "She was the one who got the attention, who got the love, who lit up a room."

...

"The way she died is just horrible. How that could have happened, I don't exactly understand. We just hope she's in a better place now," he said. "We stayed in touch. We tried. We just couldn't find a way."

The homeless problem is real bad down in St. Pete. She must have been new at it since most of them are a tight knit group of people who know plenty of tricks to stay dry and where good places to sleep are. I don't understand how this lady who parked on top of here didn't see a big bag and a human laying there?

Boston Bombing Survivor Kicked out of T.J. Maxx Because of Service Dog

edb2923zjsghgiszq09j.jpg

Boston Marathon bombing survivor Sydney Corcoran was recently forced to leave a New Hampshire T.J. Maxx after the manager objected to the use of her service dog.

As a result of the bombing that left her lying bloodied near her mother who lost both of her legs, 19-year-old Corcoran suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder. She spoke to NewsCenter 5, via the New York Daily News, about how it was very clear that the animal was a service dog:

"He had on his service dog vest — bright blue, says 'service dog' all over it. The store manager came over to me and said to me, 'If you want to keep your dog in the store, you have to put him in the carriage.'"

She added, "He's crucial to my everyday life." The manager later apologized, after Corcoran's mom, Celeste Corcoran, got involved, but forgiveness won't come that easily:

"(The manager) said, 'I'm sorry.' And I said, 'That's not good enough. You should have known. You just made someone with an emotional disorder so much worse." ...

"There are so many people with invisible, silent injuries. And the public needs to be aware that their service animals are sometimes their lifeline.

The NY Daily News reports that T.J. Maxx released a statement following the incident to apologize, and vowed to "take steps to ensure employees follow the law to admit service animals."

Seriously how does someone make management in this day and age and not know the law regarding service animals?

A lot of businesses are not up on laws regarding service dogs, but that's because the laws vary. I'm glad her mother stood up for her rights, but TJ Maxx needs to issue a formal apology and clarify their policies for service animals.

Clueless Man Claims Territory in North Sudan to Make Daughter Princess

gc5ji0bivwdtmma27u04.jpg

A story ran in the Washington Post yesterday that is equal parts cringeworthy and baffling. A Virginia man, out of the desire to prove to his children that he'd "go to the ends of the earth to make their wishes and dreams come true," claimed land along the Sudanese border to fulfill his daughter's wish to become a princess.

The story starts like this:

Jeremiah Heaton was playing with his daughter in their Abingdon, Va., home last winter when she asked whether she could be a real princess.

Most parents would then say, "No, you cant. It's just now how things work." Not Heaton. He—for some reason—said yes, okay. Sure, we'll figure it out.

"As a parent you sometimes go down paths you never thought you would," Heaton said.

Like the endless aisles of a Toys "R" Us when you said you wouldn't step into that store ever again. But when Heaton says "paths you never thought you would," he means something entirely different.

Within months, Heaton was journeying through the desolate southern stretches of Egypt and into an unclaimed 800-square-mile patch of arid desert. There, on June 16 — Emily's seventh birthday — he planted a blue flag with four stars and a crown on a rocky hill. The area, a sandy expanse sitting along the Sudanese border, morphed from what locals call Bir Tawil into what Heaton and his family call the "Kingdom of North Sudan."

Nothing to see here—just a man getting some land to give to his daughter. In Africa.

In order for Heaton's "kingdom" to be internationally recognized, he will need a few more things besides a handmade flag (which his children designed): "legal recognition from neighboring countries, the United Nations or other groups to have actual political control of the land," Sheila Carapico, a professor of political science and international studies told the Bristol Herald Courier last week.

Heaton, however, is confident that all will go well with his declaration of sovereignty in an African nation which is not his home and has never been his home.

Heaton, who ran for Congress out of Virginia's 9th district in 2012 and lost, plans to reach out to the African Union for assistance in formally establishing the Kingdom of North Sudan and said that he is confident they will welcome him. Representatives from the Egyptian and Sudanese embassies in Washington did not respond to requests for comment Saturday.

According to Heaton's assessment of the pesky politics in founding his new kingdom, he believes love will conquer all.

"I founded the nation in love for my daughter," Heaton said.

Heaton's journey hasn't been without its complications, though. His initial worry was that he was entering into "a toxic environment." Hm.

Heaton's daughter Emily has requested the kingdom be turned into agricultural production center, which Heaton is certain is the first step in solidifying a positive relationship between the sovereignly declared Kingdom of North Sudan and the Sudanese and Egyptian people.

Something tells me this little girl is going to grow up to not well adjusted and possibly a huge spoiled brat.

Not to mention his 'country' will be taken over within the week.

That is both just weird and oddly heartwarming.

Haha....I find it kind of charming in a way. So many bad fathers in the world. I can't fault one for being a good one.

Pot Farmer Named Smoke Accused of Starting California Wildfire

dofqfm2m91v5x59uafql.jpg

Twenty-seven-year-old Freddie Alexander Smoke III (really!) is accused of having started the wildfire that has burned nearly six miles of land in Northern California. According to the California Department of Fire and Forestry Protection, exhaust from the truck Smoke was driving around an illegal marijuana farm ignited a patch of dry grass.

The fire has been burning since Friday and still hasn't been completely contained by firefighters. From the Associated Press:

The so-called Bully fire has since grown to 3,700 acres and destroyed six structures, CalFire officials said. The blaze, which is burning in steep terrain, was just 10 percent contained Sunday morning.

More than 1,000 firefighters, aided by aircraft, are battling the blaze in hot, dry conditions.

The wildfire had prompted evacuations and road closures, but CalFire said all residents have been allowed to return home and all roads have been open to them.

According to Reuters, the fire has already caused $1 million in damage. Smoke was arrested by police on recklessly starting a fire and illegal marijuana cultivation charges, both felonies. Police have seized 180-odd marijuana plants from the site Smoke was working at.

Do you have to have a license to grow weed in Cali or you just can't do it on land that doesn't belong to you? I had no idea people are still being charged with weed related stuff

Idiot Tries to Take Selfie While Running With the Bulls

mh0jbdbfz4svvynctm4k.jpg

This man may have survived the famous Pamplona Bull Run, but now the police are chasing after him too—because he took a selfie as he ran just inches ahead of the charging cattle.

The Guardian reports that the bull runner is wanted because of new regulations, passed this year by the city of Pamplona, to clamp down on dangerous behavior at the festival. His slowing to snap a picture of himself contravened a new rule which prohibits unauthorised use of any recording device—and he now faces a fine of up to €3,500.

If, of course, he can be found. After all, he's clearly quite good at running away from things.

Couple Arrested for Having Sex on the Roof of a Chipotle

e77cz0hzg1dkuzt3apk1.jpg

Are motels banned in Newark, Delaware? Are fast food chains the only places in town where consenting adults can do the freak nasty in peace? First a couple was caught banging behind a Dunkin' Donuts dumpster, and now a man and woman have raised the stakes by going at it on the roof of a Chipotle just 2 blocks away.

Around 9:40 p.m. Saturday, police were called to the restaurant, where an officer "clearly observed the couple engaging in sexual intercourse on the roof at the very front of the Chipotle building," CBS Philly reports.

The officer told the two, later identified as Michael Suh, 39, and Nicole Germack, 27, to stop, but they continued having sex for 15-20 seconds. They then escaped from the roof and hid out in Suh's apartment on East Main street, where cops later found and arrested them.

They're both charged with resisting arrest, lewdness, indecent exposure, and loitering.

Move over, "The Scarecrow": There's a new most amazing Chipotle advertisement of all time, and it's a public sex incident.

Well they say no press is bad press but I have a feeling Chipotle would have rather this happened at the local Moe's burrito joint

Octomom Pleads No Contest to Welfare Fraud, Gets Community Service

yeryvk9rwzay5auuoxtm.jpg

Nadya Suleman, aka Octomom, pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor welfare fraud charge today and was given two years probation and ordered to serve 200 hours of community service. The mother of 14 had failed to disclose the nearly $30,000 in earnings she made from public appearances and videos.

According to Reuters, Suleman was facing five years and eight months for not claiming her additional income while accepting public assistance. Her lawyer, Arthur LaCilento, told Reuters that Suleman has repaid thousands of dollars:

Suleman, who both sides say has made restitution by paying back $9,805 to the California Department of Health Care Services and $16,481 to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Social Services, pleaded no contest because she did not want to go through a drawn-out trial process, LaCilento said.

"We could have litigated this, but she didn't want to go through a long trial and she wanted to resolve it quickly," LaCilento said.

The Los Angeles Times reports that welfare fraud investigators first began looking into discrepancies in Suleman's income in January receiving an anonymous tip.

She was doing porn and doing appearances at strip clubs. How exactly did she think nobody was going to notice that?

Arrest Warrant Issued for Racist Rancher Cliven Bundy's Son

ewcxxonr6srgijifaco5.jpg

A Nevada judge has issued an arrest warrant for the adult son of cattle rancher Cliven Bundy in case stemming from a 2012 felony conviction for burglary and weapons charges.

The warrant for 34-year-old Cliven Lance Bundy—who clearly didn't pick enough cotton as a child, most likely because of his freeloading dad—was issued after he failed to appear before a Clark County District Court judge on July 8th for a drug diversion program hearing.

Lance Bundy told the Associated Press that he had surgery for a nerve condition the day he was scheduled to appear in court, and has been recuperating at his parent's ranch in Bunkerville, about 80 miles northeast of Las Vegas.

He told the AP that he's trying to get his drug counselor to help him with the arrest warrant.

Man Burns to Death After Running Into Fire at Burning Man Knockoff

udtkpvkfi0ga5dx9il6r.jpg

A man at a Burning Man facsimile festival in Utah died after running into the ceremonial fire at the closing ceremonies on Saturday. Police are investigating the case as a suicide.

The man, Salt Lake City resident Christopher Wallace, ran into the fire that was built to burn down an effigy of a character from Where the Wild Things Are. The festival, Element 11, is Utah's answer to Burning Man.

According to the Associated Press, Wallace seemed deliberate in his actions.

Grantsville police Lt. Steve Barrett said the man had told some of the estimated 1,200 attendees in advance about his plans to run into the fire. The three-story-tall effigy, modeled on a character from the classic picture book "Where The Wild Things Are," had been burning for about 30 minutes and was fully engulfed when the man crossed a safety perimeter about 50 feet from the structure and jumped in, officials said.

A spokesperson for Element 11 told Deseret News that they didn't believe Wallace's death was an accident.

"He was very fast; he was very motivated," J.P. Bernier, a spokesman for Element 11, told the Deseret News. "It wasn't an accident or any act of negligence on anybody's part. He had a very deliberate objective to get past our volunteers, past our safety perimeter."

The fire had previously been measured at 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit.

Woman on "Meth Rampage" Haunts Couple's Apartment, Hides Under Bed

hnnh3ghmifuukcelybnc.png

A Seattle couple returned to their condo Wednesday night to find it completely torn apart. Clothes and electronics were strewn all over the bed, their junk mail had been all been opened, and a can of paint had been poured over the toilet. "It was just trashed," Bridget O'Neill told Vocativ.

The doorknobs were slathered with lotion and several pairs of O'Neill's shoes had been separated from their heels, but nothing seemed to be missing. When O'Neill and her husband Brian called the cops, they couldn't find fingerprints or evidence of any theft.

They did find a purse with a 27-year-old woman's ID in it, though.

Satisfied that the homeowners weren't in danger, the cops left. But not for long, because that's when the noises started.

"It sounded like a dying possum or raccoon. I had only heard wounded animals make that kind of noise before," Brian O'Neill told Vocativ.

"Now facing the possibility of having to figure out how to arrest a poltergeist, officers dutifully sped back to the University District condo," wrote Jonah Spangenthal-Lee, who runs SPD's brilliant police blotter.

Officers pulled the owner of the purse from the narrow space underneath the bed, where she'd been hiding for at least two hours.

She told the cops she'd been on a days-long "meth rampage." They believe she climbed a tree, opened the window, and hid under the bed in a bout of intense paranoia. At roughly 5'7" and 90 pounds, she was able to squeeze into a space normally only used by the O'Neills' two cats.

While she was under there, she had been cutting apart the boxspring with a kitchen knife, and she also left behind a needle (in the bed) and her hair (all over the house).

Meth: Not even once, for days at time, with a knife, under a strange family's bed.

"British Kim Kardashian" Blew $30,000 on Surgery to Become a Kim Klone

g2rzrycfbpvbylzmyzs9.jpg

A 25-year-old British woman has spent nearly $30,000 on surgical procedures to keep up with sex tape star and famous famous person Kim Kardashian. Claire Louise Leeson started the kardashification process when she was just 17, and now has bigger boobs, whiter teeth, and so, so much spray tan.

Appearing on the U.K. talk show This Morning, she explained that she wears pants with silicone padding to fake Kim's famous booty, but she's considering getting actually butt implants as a next step.

v7m1pnjwmkwn6dq2h6xq.jpg

Why? Because she was bullied when she was younger, and "told every day that I was the 'ugliest thing alive' and I should 'kill myself'."

Unfortunately, that's just one more thing she has in common with Kim K.

No word on how much Leeson has spent on "K stars" in the terrifyingly profitable Kim Kardashian iPhone game.

Man Arrested for "Passive-Aggressively" Stabbing a Watermelon

j3redtyqssbaixuz7mfm.png

The Register Citizen of Torrington reports on a domestic dispute that could only happen in Connecticut: Last night, a man was arrested for stabbing a watermelon in a "passive aggressive" manner.

According to the police report, a woman called the cops after her partner Carmine Cervellino, 49, threatened her by stabbing a watermelon with a butcher knife and leaving it for her to see. From the Register:

The woman ... was greeted by the sight of a watermelon, pierced by Cervillino's large butcher knife, sitting on the kitchen counter top, police said.

Cervillino walked in seconds later, and without saying anything, began slicing pieces of the watermelon. The woman snapped a picture of the knife and turned it over to police.
Apparently, Cervillino was set off after the woman took his Percocet.

He's been charged with threatening and disorderly conduct, and the case has been referred to family services.

http://www.registercitizen.com/gene...ed-with-threatening-after-stabbing-watermelon

SO let me get this straight, the cannibal cop can get off and he wrote all his plans down but this guy gets arrested for slicing melon and not saying anything? Seems like any good lawyer could get this dismissed

It made the news here too. One funny comment on the article was : dommage, elle ressemble à Conchia Wurtz / Too bad she looks like Conchita Wurtz ( w/o the beard of course ).

Too each its own, at least her surgery is well done ( ie : she isn't freaky looking ).

She looks better than the Justin Beiber wannabe.
