Suicide Squad: General Discussion and Speculation - Part 1

Calling it now at the end of the film the Joker will have escaped. Maybe a post credits Batman scene? :woot:

I didn't say she was.

Smith has done how many movies in the last 5 years? And only Men in Black 3 did well. Not to mention there are several rising black male actors now, and WB just gave Cyborg to a complete unknown.

Smith doesn't have much leverage on this movie especially when it's an ensemble. He's not going to get paid substantially more at this point in his career.

Will Smith and Margot Robbie are starring in WB's Focus movie together. There's probably a picture deal in place rather than getting paid a lot for SS.

You put her with the confirmed Smith in your post, that is why I asked as her name wasn't in the press release I read.

I think you are underestimating the power structure in Hollywood, no one else in this film has drawn a dime at the box office, and Smith, just like Cruise and Depp, will still get the Lion's share of the pay cheque for a film like this, I expect he'll be pushed heavily as the face of the Suicide Squad.

Was not expecting Will as deadshot, hell I wasn't expecting will at all, and I'm not sure how I feel about it. It is funny that he and his wife both have a connection to DC Comics with her playing Fish on Gotham and him as deadshot.

I agree. While his paycheck might not be quite so gonzo massive as it has been in previous star vehicles when he was at his peak, Will Smith is still a proven name and commodity, and will still get the movie star treatment in the projects he puts his name too. Expect him to get the highest salary of anyone on the cast, and as Hunter says, expect him to be prominent in the marketing. I could definitely see him being the main character of the piece, in terms of likely being an access character - we follow him as he's captured, then inducted into the Suicide Squad - and with his fractious relationships with Flagg and Waller providing some of the core dynamics of the film.

Of course Smith will be the highest paid actor in Suicide Squad as he is by far the biggest star in the cast. Certainly WB will market Smith the most. I still don't believe Smith will be allowed to control this film like he has his films in the past though.

It's interesting looking at how the Suicide Squad movie has developed. Some saw it as a kinda "Huh?" outta nowhere thing, even moreso with this powerhouse cast now attached to it. But I'd argue that the brand has been in development within DC for some time now.

Look at the comics. The Suicide Squad was essentially gone, replaced by the Secret Six in the "supervillains turned into a team" stakes. But the New 52 reboot saw the dissolution of the Secret Six and the reformation of the Suicide Squad. It was also at this time that Harley Quinn was integrated into the roster and promoted heavily as being part of the team. Then we had the already-popular Arkham video game series recently set up the notion of a Suicide Squad game in that end teaser with Waller approaching Deathstroke about joining. Then we had the Suicide Squad being built up as a big deal in the Arrow TV series. And most recently there was that Assault on Arkham animated movie. A lot has been done to transition Suicide Squad from a forgotten property to being something active and integrated into DC Entertainment's various forms of media, building awareness amongst different demographics of fans.

The Suicide Squad are still not a household name, so there is still some work to do to raise awareness amongst a wider audience. But since they're not all incredibly established, despite the starry cast this almost has a kinda Guardians of the Galaxy vibe to it, where it's something a bit fresher and edgier than the more established, iconic heroes making their way to the screen. I bet DC are hoping it's similarly successful.

I've been saying it for a while and I will continue to say it:

Smith needs this movie more than it needs him. I expect him to be the highest paid actor in this movie, but I don't expect it to be like $20 million.

I literally just posted this concern in the "Will Smith is Deadshot" thread. I hope the other characters, escpecially Harley Quinn, aren't pushed to the side due to Will Smith being a bigger star than the rest.

I don't think it's too specifically a "Will Smith" concern. Whoever was playing Deadshot, if I was making a Suicide Squad movie he'd likely be the guy I'd pick out of the ensemble to be the main character.

He is in desperate need of a hit and no I definitely do not think he is getting 20 million upfront for Suicide Squad.

IDK why people are worried about the budget, these people aren't getting 20 to 50 mil each.

My guess is Will and Leto got 5-7 mil
Margot and Hardy 3-5
Jai and Cara got like 1 mil

Actually remember seeing Gadot got like 300,000 for WW if that was true Jai and Cara probably got damn near nothing

Is Lex in this movie to free the Suicide Squad and begin his plans for the LoD/Secret Society

At this point, I think Smith might need the film more than the film needs him.

To be honest, I don't think I have much interest in this film. The SS never really did anything for me, nor do those cast in the roles. Might actually skip this one in the theater if the trailers don't impress. As much as I loved MoS, the DC film universe right now isn't seeming too compelling to me, which is odd.

Why do people on here keep obessesing over Smith's son when he has nothing to do with Suicide Squad? The obsession is odd to me.

Will the Joker steal the film out from under Deadshot? And what about Harley? Both Joker and Harley have the potential to overshadow Will Smith because of the very nature of their characters.

Who will ultimately be marketed as the film's "protagonist"? Will it be Deadshot?

It doesn't matter if Smith is the lead, The Joker always steals the films that he is in. The character is all about stealing the spotlight.

Will Smith is more of a presence than any lead the Joker has had to share screen with before. He's not playing stoic Batman here. The Joker's flashier, but I don't think Smith as "bad guy who doesn't give a ****" would be left too far behind.

Gotta agree here. People live joker and will flock to see him on screen again.

GoT Little Finger as Deathstroke?? there's some source ??? some site are reporting the news.

The Joker really is the biggest selling point that this film has... even with it's all-star cast.
