Suicide Squad: General Discussion and Speculation - Part 2

Will Smith and Margot Robbie don't have star power. They can't sell tickets. Their latest movie "Focus" flopped terribly.

I'm not sure if this will be carried over to "Suicide Squad" or not.

Its' made back more than half of the budget in its' first week you clown.:funny: Just over $50m budget and so far its' made $30.8m.

So on what planet is it a flop?

Focus opening weekend is disappointing (it should have hit 23-25 million) but it was a poorly marketed R rated con man movie with so-so reviews. Not shocking that it disappointed.

It's disappointing and yet it grossed 4 times more than Johnny Depp fronted Mortdecai and Hemsworth fronted Blackhat. I agree that Smith's Star power has depleted a bit but Suicide Squad is not just going to be a Will Smith movie anyway. The draw is going to be Joker and Harley as well as yes Mr. Smith who I'm sure will help sell the film overseas. It's going to be a PG: 13 rated special effects action movie, completely different from Focus. Furthermore nobody is calling Margot Robbie a star, she is in fact not a star...yet.

Focus only open with 18million on it's first weekend. I was expecting higher since it has Will Smith in it.

Even horrible movies like Scream 4, American Pie: Reunion opens much higher (19 million) than a Will Smith movie.

Since it's budget is about 50 million, it has to make double to make profits. Can Focus even gross 100 million to ensure it's not a flop for the studio?

American Pie: Reunion is one of the best movies ever made. Hello!

Those are rather odd comparisons to make. Even A-list stars see their openings vary widely depending on the type of film they're in, whether it's part of an established popular franchise, the strength of the marketing and how well the film is received. Will Smith opened Ali to $14.7 million and Seven Pounds to $14.8 million. Star power, even at its height, isn't magic. It has its limits.

Since it's budget is about 50 million, it has to make double to make profits. Can Focus even gross 100 million to ensure it's not a flop for the studio?
It should gross over $100 million worldwide, yes.

Are you joking?

Cavill's previous two movies (Immortals; Cold Day of Light) before Man of Steel were utter poo and performed quite terribly.

...Who the fug cares? Focus isn't Suicide Squad, Einstein.

.......so I'm starting to think that we're not getting a joker picture today. :funny:

Immortals did well actually: $226.9 million worldwide against a $75 million production budget.

Yup. Really surprised Ayer gave us a heads up that Leto was getting a hair cut and even more surprised that it was trending on Facebook and Twitter.

Welp, time for bed.

According to CinemaBlend, Relatively and Universal put in over 60 million for the marketing. 226 million WW on a 130+ million dollar budget isn't exactly good.

Leto getting a haircut for the role seems like an odd thing to hype up by announcing it as a vague "something is coming" the day prior, but I highly doubt we'll get anything else today.

A worldwide gross of three times production budget is good for almost any film. It sets a film up for a good profit against total costs after home entertainment revenue. A lot of films, even successful ones, don't get into the black from theatrical box office alone when measured against total costs. Production and marketing costs are too high for that. While some giant hits achieve significant theatrical profitability, it's not what the business model is built on these days. Home entertainment isn't an afterthought. It's an integral part of the total revenue versus total costs package.

That's pretty much what I think as well. A haircut is a lame thing to hype the day before and then get nothing else....but it appears that's exactly what they did

Well if you are going to include other expenses than you should also include other revenues.

You make triple your production budget and there is no reason your movie shouldn't make money

He tweeted "Something will happen. Tomorrow."

And something did happen. It's not his fault some people here read that as "OMG GUYZ, DO YOU WANT JOKER PICS?!!!"

I didn't think they would give us a Joker pic but hyping a haircut is stupid...we knew he was going to get a haircut. No need for hype
