It's influencing the hype level. the discussion about how the audience might react, and how it will affect the DCEU

Yeah, it influences hype. It doesn't influence the audience's opinion after they've already seen it. The audience can make up their own mind then, because they've actually seen the movie.

Just got back from an early screening.

Here are my thoughts:

I don't know what film the critics saw but it obviously wasn't Suicide Squad because holy crap it was FANTASTIC!!!

that doesn't mean that it was a perfect film, it's a box office popcorn superhero flick, it's not made to win oscars it's made to give the audience a good time. And boy did it!

If I had to make any critiques they would be this:

Headshot's daughter wasn't a good actress. I rolled my eyes overtime she was on screen which was not much at all.

Katana was cool but she barely said two words, a character you didn't really need to much

Enchantress's motivations were pretty murky but I will say this. That is a common thread of just about ALL superhero films so if the critics want to criticize that then they are being hypocrites of just about every DC and Marvel film ever.

The only complaint I heard from anyone in the audience was one girl beside me who complained that she only came there for Leto and he was barely in it. She wanted a 30 Seconds to Mars song too. Don't know what she was thinking, anyone who did a tiny bit of research knew this wasn't a Joker film.

There were cheers at the end. Lots of laughs, lots of clapping at the big moments, applause when the film ended. Everyone was smiling and talking about how great it was.

And one guy dressed up as the Joker, green hair and tux. And because I was dressed up as Harley, I ran up to him at the end and shouted "Pudding!" Good times.

I predict audiences will be giving this film a MASSIVE thumbs up and the Critics are going to have to put up and shut up. They have been wrong far too many times this year it's ridiculous.

Look around this board, nothing but doom and gloom for a movie most of you haven't even seen yet. You can't tell me that's not proof that critics can influence your feelings
These movies are not just art, they are commercial products. Movie critics, much like food critics, serve the purpose of helping the consumers decide whether or not that product is worth spending their hard-earned money on. And yes, such a thing is subjective, which is why sites like RT exist, so that they can focus not on one individual's taste, but instead gather a large sampling from hundreds of critics across the board to give the consumer an idea on the overall consensus of whether or not most critics feel that product is worth their time/money. They aren't there to tell people who have seen the movie (or eaten at the restaurant) how they should feel about it.

Most critics are there to give a recommendation to their readers/viewers as to whether it is worth investing their time and money into going to see a particular film.

Their bread and butter is new releases, but a lot also like to talk about older films to bring them to the attention of modern viewers.

They have influence only in the sense that the best ones have (as well as critics collectively as a group such as the case of Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic) have become trusted by audiences due to their good track records. They don't really influence whether people like a particular movie. But they can influence whether people bother with a movie at all.
This is how I have found some of my favorite films I didn't know existed before ready reviews. It is why fans should be less concerned. Most have already made up there minds whether to see a movie or not. Reviews are for GA.

Oh yeah. A lot of my favorite movies were made before I was born. I never would have watched a great deal of them if it wasn't for critics.

And that is probably why it gets such a reaction from fan. They think they are too influential when it comes to the box office. Personally, I don't think that the effect is that big. I feel like RT is better at giving a view of what we can expect from the general audience in terms of reaction. But even that is far from full proof. JW was positive, but a bit lukewarm. It is also the 4th biggest film of all time now.

Ebert's great movies list helped me in that regard, a lot.

Just saw it after being talked into it. My word, what a piece of sh**.

The only reason I'm listening to the critics for Suicide Squad is because it is August and I'm busy. If it came out in June, I would have gone regardless.

That's the problem with fans and critics. Fans are going to see the movie anyways (for the most part), so what the critics say doesn't really matter that much. But for the general audience sitting on the fence whether to go or not, the critics are one thing that helps make that decision easier.

Glad you liked it Nerwen. I'm seeing a trend of female fans for this film, which is surprising for the genre.

I wonder what the 2nd week BO will do for SS when Sausage Party comes out.

No China release for SS according to IGN, RIP SS breaking even. The soon to be biggest market on the planet is not in play anymore,

Yeah critics can be out of tune with the GA a lot, that's no secret. The smaller, weirder movies are when I especially pay attention to the critics for guidance because they'll champion things that don't have "broad appeal," will never be huge hits with the GA and would never be on my radar if it weren't for them.

Yes and no.

Are you more apt to listen to a film critic or a friend?

That's what's going to help. The audience members who go out and tell their friends to watch it. Because people trust the judgement of their friends and family members more than they do some talking head in the paper or the internet.

From what I've seen, Audiences really like this film and I think that is going to reflect with it. Word of mouth is going to go a long way.

Look at Margot's other film, Tarzan. It was rotten on RT but got an A- from audience members, positive word of mouth actually helped it's sales. It did very well domestically (to the surprise of many critics) and is still going strong over seas. It's already made up it;s budget and then some.

So I'm just saying, what really matters in all of this is did the audience enjoy it? From my screening, that was a big yes.

Another divisive DC film it seems.

I haven't been paying attention to the budget. What does SS need to make to break even? Can it break even with say Ant-Man numbers or did they spend a fortune?

The Hollywood reporter reported it needed 800 mil WW to break even. It might fall 200 mil short of that now that China is off the table.

It had $175 million budget (don't know what marketing was)

If the film makes around $100-$115 this weekend then it shouldn't have any problems getting its budget back.

Correct me if I am wrong. But didn't BvS get to 870m with only like 100m then China? SS is tracking well enough that even if it does only the exact same business every where else in the world, it will do well over 700m and could easily top 750m.

They spent $175 million on this one, so I'd say probably $600-$800 million would be the sweet point. Ant-Man numbers would be a disappointment.
