Well, on an unrelated note, the Extended Cut of Suicide Squad is out. This little bit from Gamespot's take on it felt noteworthy:

The extended cut may not add a whole lot, but thankfully we didn't see a regular release followed by this extended version months later. David Ayer did say the theatrical version was "his cut." The special features are interesting. Commentary would have been nice. If you enjoyed the movie, this is definitely worth adding to your personal collection.

The studio is still developing a Squad sequel as well as looking into a spin-off featuring Deadshot, the assassin character played by Will Smith. But this project was the most furthest along, and with Robbie’s Quinn having received near universal praise from Squad, this was the most natural project for Ayer with which to make his Warners return. The filmmaker is currently nearing the end of principal photography for Bright, his fantasy thriller for Netflix that stars Will Smith and Joel Edgerton.

The fact that Ayer went through hell with the studio chopping up his film and he's coming back for more. I guess he's lost some artistic integrity.

Not to mention, outside of studio interference, given the story Ayer presented the film was always going to be scattered in a myriad of ways.

So I totally agree that this news is mind boggling.

Not an inspiring choice for the director IMO. I would have preferred a female director. WB better not screw this up although I don't think Skwad was screwed up much, it was always going to be a very flawed movie.

Agreed. I really, really, really wanted a female director to helm this. Would turn out so much better.

How unfortunate. Suicide Squad made money, but it's not exactly a well-directed movie.

Then again, WB is letting Snyder direct Justice League despite the reception of both Man of Steel and Dawn of Justice, so not like there was any thought put into this. That's two for two now.

Its clear to me they know what to do. Geoff Johns and Jon Berg are producing this & Geneva Robertson-Dworet, not David Ayer, is writing the script. But he will be a producer so i am sure that means a trailer company wont be able to recut his film.

This is so freaking weird especially after Ben Affleck recently came out saying he is taking him time with the Batman movie and not rushing it to met any deadlines with a mediocre movie.

edit: Well at least Ayer isn't writing the Gotham Sirens movie.

Personally, I am not excited to see David Ayer back. His actions sequences kinda underwhelms for the most part. His technique could work for war films but this is CBM territory. One of the main disappointments I have with this film even though I was entertained for the most part.

Well I'm happy and I'm sure WB wants to maximize the profit and get critical appraisal as well, and the fact Ayer stayed on means with a different team dynamic in the WB now he's likely promised that there won't be competing cuts and studio meddling this time around.
