11:31 AM 7/17/2011 by Pamela McClintock

The final film in the ‘Potter’ franchise breaks numerous records; Disney’s ‘Winnie the Pooh’ opens to an expected $8 million.

Capping the most successful film franchise in history, Warner Bros.' Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 conjured up the top opening of all time at the domestic box office, grossing a staggering $168.6 million.

International numbers weren’t immediately available, but once they come in, Deathly Hallows 2 should also be able to claim the top launch of all time at the worldwide box office.

The previous record domestically belonged to Warners’ The Dark Knight, which opened to $158.4 million.

Deathly Hallows 2 was a box office giant out of the gate, earning $92.1 million on Friday alone, including a record $43.6 million in midnight shows. The pic grossed another $42.8 million on Saturday, falling only 53%.
Other records set by Deathly Hallows 2 domestically: Largest opening day ever, and the largest opening for the franchise. Previous best was Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 ($125 million).

Sentiment was running high as Potter fans rushed to see the final title in the franchise. They weren’t disappointed, and gave the film a stellar A CinemaScore. Females made up the majority of the audience at 54%, while 55% of those buying tickets were over the age of 25.

Deathly Hallows 2 is the first title in the franchise to be released in 3D. While 3D upped the film’s earning potential, only 43% of the opening gross came from 3D theaters, another reminder that moviegoers in North America are opting to see films in 2D and avoid the extra upcharge.

That didn’t hurt IMAX, though, which played Deathly Hallows 2 in 274 theaters. IMAX theaters supplied $15.5 million in revenues, a record opening for the large-format exhibitor.

Deathly Hallows 2’s overall box office glow fueled a great weekend overall, with revenues up as much as 37% over the same weekend last year.

Paramount’s Transformers: Dark of the Moon became the first film this year to jump the $300 million mark, grossing $21.2 million over the weekend for a cume of $302.8 million.

Disney’s new kids entry Winnie the Pooh met expectations in its debut, grossing $8 million in its debut. However, the film only placed No. 6 for the weekend, coming in behind fellow Disney/Pixar pic Cars 2, which grossed $8.3 million for a domestic cume of $165.3 million.

Sony Pictures Classics’ Midnight in Paris is now Woody Allen’s top domestic earner of all time, grossing $1.9 million for the weekend from 706 theaters for a cume of $41.8 million, surpassing the $40.1 million grossed by Hannah and Her Sisters.

I don't see any movie passing that for a very long time.

Maybe Avatar 2.

But with the Twilight hype, they will probably break some sort of record.

Looks like TDK's saturday(and sunday) were safe after all. I actually thought potter was going to beat the record by more than 10mill by the looks of it's early numbers. Guess the front loaded theory held up, and will probably become more apparent as weeks go by. Cap may have a chance at topping it domestically by week 2.

The international numbers should be a different story though.

all that talk of 180 mill kinda went south. I wonder if it will be the new first to 200mill, I have my doubts.

Jesus!!!!! :wow:

Box Office Report: ‘Harry Potter’ Nabs a Record-Breaking $476 Mil in Worldwide Debut
12:42 PM 7/17/2011 by Pamela McClintock

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince was the previous crown holder at $394 million; Deathly Hallows Part 2 earns a staggering $307 million at the international box office, and $168.6 million domestically.

Warner Bros.’s Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 grossed a massive $476 million in its worldwide debut, by far the best showing of all time.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince was the previous crown holder at $394 million.

Deathly Hallows 2’s opening overseas clocked in at $307 million, while it earned $168.8 million in North America.

Earlier this summer, Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides scored the biggest debut of all time at the international box office when opening to $262 million. Deathly Hallows safely beat that number as it rolled out in 59 countries.

Domestically, Deathly Hallows raced past the $158.4 million opening of The Dark Knight to score the top three-day weekend debut of all time.

“The phenomenal result is a true testament to the universal and timeless appeal of J.K. Rowling's beloved books. Whether in German, Russian, Spanish, Japanese or any other language, fans everywhere have embraced the finale," Warner Bros. president of international distribution Veronika Kwan-Rubinek said.

"We thank the filmmakers, cast and crew for this amazing film, as well as our teams and partners in exhibition for bringing this epic story to its conclusion on big screens all over the world," she continued.

Rowling has been pissing into golden toilets for a while now, but she can now get a golden shower as well.

Yes, I know what I said.

I wonder if Warner Bros is still upset that they had to buy out 3 performances of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying on Broadway so Daniel Radcliffe could attend the London premiere? I think they made that money back in about 10 minutes this weekend. :wow:

that's impressive, it's like half a billion in a weekend.

this was why WB wasnt worried about the Green Lantern box office

its all cocaine and ****es at the WB offices now

i just dont understand how can anyone be surpised. its the last movie after 10 years. its the biggest event movie. old, young, crazy normal people like the movies.

I don't think anyone is suprised. I know i'm not anyway. It was always going to be a box office monster.

who's surprised?
(outside the bat forums)

Personally I'll be surprised if it does avatar numbers, being the biggest event movie or otherwise.

I guess it's almost safe to assume that it will beat Avatar and become a new top grossing movie ever just to be beaten by another mega-blockbuster in next couple of years. This has become nothing special these days for a movie to make over $50m on its opening day and reach $150m by the end of the first weekend. I am sure by 2015 films will start making over $200m in a weekend, lol!

it will have to have a good couple of days to do that

$150 million is still special at this current time. But if 3D becomes more of the norm than now then it will get diluted. It is only a matter of time before $200 million in a weekend or $100 million in a single day occurs. Avatar I'm guessing.

potter is one of the lowest attended domestic 100plus mill openers ever, apparently lower than the original spiderman even.
I think inflation will make 150 a little more normal sooner rather than later.

Are you sure I thought I read somewhere adjusted for inflation its behind TDK and SM3, not the original one. I still think $150 million OW is pretty special because to date only HP7.2, TDK, and SM3 have done such numbers. Yes there will be more as inflation continues to happen and 3D becomes more prevalent but as of now 150 is still a special number.

Edit: Nvm, I just read BOM report and it ranks 6th in terms of ticket sales.

yea.
I think next year we'll see a few films flirt with the number.

Omg please pass the dark knight record so that those fan's can start whining some more. I also want it to do Avatar number. It better be a hit.

its all cocaine and ****es at the WB offices now
:hehe:

Even though i'm not surprised it's done big, i must admit seeing HP's numbers is still very impressive. Wow! :wow:
