Summer 2011 box office predictions - Part 2

I think it looks bad for cowboys and aliens if they tie or barely beat the smurfs for the weekend. I also think its kinda interesting that not alot of movies have had big opening weekends this year except for fast five, hp, transformers and hangover 2.

I don't think Deadpool is going to be made anytime soon. I think that movie would be a bomb like Watchmen in the sense that the GA doesn't care about it and only fanboys will see it. Green Lantern just bombed. Ryan Reynolds isn't obviously a crowd drawer. Plus, First Class just barely made an okay profit. So...I don't see them spitting out a Deadpool movie for a while, if at all.

I feel bad for Renyolds. A $70 or $80 million budgeted Deadpool film starring him could have been a hit along the lines of the first Blade and incrementally helped his star status. GL was just a tough sell to do on film and they did it horribly, but he is going to get most of the blame in Hollywood.

But yes, I actually will be (happily) surprised if XFC gets a sequel. The odds of Fox making Deadpool or Gambit into films now are nil. They'll continue to make Wolverine movies and possibly X-Men reboots starring Wolverine, but I think they're seeing a saturation for the non-A-list characters. Which is too bad because XFC was fantastic and better than any Wolverine-led film to date.

Yea, a Deadpool movie would probably be made for like, 60 million. Reynolds said in an interview last month that it was gonna be "cheap and nasty". Which sounds about right. You don't wanna go spending 100 million dollars on a rated R Deadpool movie, otherwise yea, you'd end up with another Watchmen.

And the thing with a Deadpool film is, it's kinda like making fun of cheesy superhero movies like Green Lantern. All the romance cliches, the origin story formula etc is basically crapped on and burnt, going by the script that leaked a while back. It's just something totally different. If it's marketed as more of an action comedy rather than another superhero movie, I think there is an audience for that kind of movie. It could be the perfect tonic for the people who are getting sick and tired of these safe, cliche superhero flicks. It just depends on if Fox have the balls to make a movie like that without neutering it. Which remains to be seen.

If Reynolds doesn't do it I'd go for someone like Woody Harrellson. Reading the script it sorta reminded me of Tallahasee from Zombieland. A crazy, funny guy who deep down is sorta tortured and tragic.

I think ryan is bankable but its the movies he's been are just ok or middle of the pack movies. Green Lantern could have been good if it wasnt promoted as CGI fest with a horrible story. I would like to see him play a villian for once and maybe give up the super hero bit for a while. You cant deny he has a gift for comedies. His career is alot like ryan goseling's where there really good actors but they have sucky taste in scripts or movies in general that dont hit big.

Ryan Gosling has a great taste in scripts

But as I said in the GL forums, Reynolds' career wont be hurt by GL i dont think. But I dont think it will move forward either

No i said he has sucky taste in scripts.

I know what you said...I'm disagreeing.

The Notebook
Half Nelson
Fracture
LArs and the Real GIrl
Blue Valentine
Crazy, Stupid. Love
Drive

All were either box office successes, critical successes, or both. Maybe in his earlier career you could say he had a bad choice in scripts, but Gosling's script choice has been great since 04. Looking at his filmography since 04 he has only made 2 movies that were critical or financial successes

HIs choice in scripts is fine

Yea, i'd say the opposite. Gosling makes some pretty good choices. He seems to prefer movies that are actually good, instead of just going for big paydays.

More or less Deadpool would kind of be like in the vein of Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back or Shrek, only as an action/sci-fi flick.

What about Harry Potter? The film is like one huge shark in the boxoffice ocean, lol.

1 billion dollars isnt cool. YOu know what's cool? 2 billion dollars

I called C&A not doing well

To be fair I don't think anyone is surprised that C&A won't be a blockbuster.

Pretty much. But it's a bit more dark and twisted. It's about a guy who has terminal cancer and lets himself become a lab rat when it all boils down. But it has a jet black, ironic kinda comedy to it.

For instance, there is this old blind woman who is Deadpools slave/house maid who he tortures by forcing her to build IKEA furniture for him.

The whole thing is just a very dark comedy, yet you don't want people thinking it's ripping off Kick Ass or anything. It should have those fun moments, making pop culture jokes and fourth wall breaking in the middle of it.

I odn't see any middle ground with Deadpool. Audiences will either eat it up and love the idea or hate it and think of it as stupid and confusing.

Yup. The first time I saw the trailer, the audience laughed at it. I knew then it would be a stinker. The title alone is awful.

That's cool...but the GA didn't go see it so it didn't do too well. It's too niche of a movie for the GA and the title didn't help it out.

Yes, I realize that. I read box office results too.

But it's still a good movie. Vastly better than the last god-awful Transformers movie, which keeps making money for some reason.

I never argued whether or not it would be good. I just didn't see it being bankable.
