Supergirl Supergirl General Discussion Thread - - - Part 12

An interview of Nicole Maines. She explains why casting a cis-gender actor for a trans role in today's confusing times (when people still have reservations about trans people) is a way to reinforce stereotypes.

It is not quite the same as straight people playing gay characters.

It might help if trans people can play cis roles and then, you can do vice versa. But does that happen?

Will Nicole ever play just a straight girl role that is not even meant to be transgendered at all? Does that ever happen?

That is what I meant.. If these roles can be interchanged, some day in the future, then I think it should be perfectly fine for cis actors to play trans roles... Because in essence, acting is about occupying someone else's skin. However, right now, the issues, trans identities and everything around it is so muddied, having cis actors play trans role muddies it further.

That is what I understood from that article anyways.

PS: Not that it is any creators' duty to be a social rights activist. However, people are going to speak out if they see an issue with representation (just like with female rep), and this would explain why there was a problem in other cases.

Here an example:
" Look at what the feminist movement has eventually led to. Promoting people with biological problems".

Pathetic. Those who write these kind of comment are the people with real problems.

Yup. Along with, "I won't be watching this show anymore" and "My children won't be watching this anymore." And the common "they're mentally ill" BS.

To those so-called fans, I say: Bye, Felicia. You won't be missed.

They, or their children, probably know someone who is LGBT, but are so set in their own way of thinking they shut down.

I dont even give those people the time it takes to hit mute.

Here's some information from Den of Geek on Nia Nal/Dreamer http://www.denofgeek.com/us/tv/supe...-season-4-dreamer-first-transgender-superhero.

Some highlights:

She will be the great-great-great-great-great-grandmother of the Legion member Nura Nal/Dream Girl. I think this is a smart move this way they can take some characteristics of the established comic character but avoid the criticism for not being comic book accurate.

Her superpower will be the ability to see the future, which is like Dream Girl in the comics. By picking a character who's powers don't overlap with Kara's the "Kara is depowered for another hero" issue is off the table.

She's a cub reporter who worked for Cat Grant as an intern at the White House. Any link to Cat IMO is a good thing. Between this and an appearance from President Marsdin I'm cautiously hopeful we might see Cat.

I love the characters on the show, even though the show is awful. I just watch it for the characters.

She's not Dream Girl? that's interesting. not sure how much of an effect this will have onscreen anyway,

But she's transgender? Am I missing something? I wasn't aware transgender (man to woman?) could give birth. :whatever:

It would be so cool if Lex Luthor would finally show up , that would be so great

But she's transgender? Am I missing something? I wasn't aware transgender (man to woman?) could give birth. :whatever:

Biologically speaking, her genetic… contribution (either extant or banked) would have to be patrilineal - not matrilineal. But labels are more a matter of political/linguistic convention. Presumably, a trans person who is a woman can also be a mother, grandmother, great grandmother, etc.

BTW, by my calculation, a 5x great grandchild only gets you to the late 22nd century - or maybe into the 23rd. You’d need several more generations to reach the 30th century Legion of Superheroes. :word:

So it looks like Jimmy is still going to be Guardian for the next season.
Why not go one step further and upgrade his suit into a variation Steel?

John Henry could be his mentor like the MCU's Hank Pym or old man Bruce Wayne in Batman beyond. They could even bring back Shaq to play the role. :woot:

I would much rather have far less of Guardian, than a whole story line built around him.

They could move Guardian into his very own show and free up valuable SG time!:o

I've hated Guardian and Jimmy since the show has begun. If I had a choice I would just write him out, but if he stays in the show I think making him a variation of Steel might make him more tolerable and give him more purpose.

The whole existence of Guardian is laughable. Jimmy wanted to become Guardian to help Kara. The super powered alien needs help from the human in a "hockey mask" and some gadgets!? GTFOH :woot:

Give him the Steel suit and he could at least go toe to toe with major threats.

Very interesting. Nice to see Lex cast a bit of a shadow over the series. Hopefully, since they mention Cadmus, they also mention the Cyborg Supermen.

Rhona Mitra as Mercy is a fantastic bit of casting! :woot:

So I was wrong in assuming that new Daft Punk suit was Kara's doppelganger. It's apparently Supergirl, but only for like an episode.

Behind-the-scenes photos from Hollywood North/YVRShoots suggest

this is an Eradicator suit.

One of the Supergirl writers Eric Carrasco was on a podcast, and lets slip that he's been trying to get Lobo on the show for some time.

Lobo is perfect for Supergirl. Hopefully they can share the character with Krypton show.
