Superman SPOILER Review Thread (NO TAGS NECESSARY)

I made mention in here that upon initial release I left the theatre not knowing how I felt. I felt I was stuck in limbo between like and dislike, not falling into either category, but completely unsure. Having seen it the second time knowing what to expect instead of anticipate, my view of this film became immensely clear. This is the greatest Superman movie ever made. I grew up only knowing Reeve. It was the sole reason I loved that damn character above all else and every iteration since, though ok, never made me feel much, other than pale imitations of what Reeve started. This movie however makes me feel things that I can't explain. I've seen it in total, 5 times now and each time is better than the last one. I'm truly in love with this version of Superman and David is Superman to me. I don't see David, it's Superman, it's heart and love and sincerity. I never thought I'd have it twice in my lifetime but alas, he's finally back, THE Superman is back.

Hello, I feel the same, I’ve seen the movie 4 times and it’s a movie that improve and gets better each time, for me, only the lords of the rings did this to me.

I’m so happy to see all the positive reactions to this movie. For the longest time, after so many years of divisive reactions to Superman media over the years, it felt like this day could never come. As a fan of the old Reeve movies too, finding something that could match that always felt impossible and so many of the prior efforts couldn’t come close.

But this… Gunn just knew exactly what to do. Crazy to think too that so many doubted him initially on this. I was even a little unsure, and I’m a huge fan of most of his stuff. But even I worried that his typical sense of humor and visual flair wouldn’t fit a character like Superman. But he stepped up and knocked it out of the park. That’s what makes a great filmmaker. That’s how you become a Spielberg or a Nolan. And this cast. They just elevate the material in a way most superhero (or just mainstream) casts don’t. Corenswet, Brosnahan and Hoult are a Clark/Lois/Lex trio that will live on forever.

Honestly, I had some serious doubts about Gunn being both the Writer and Director for this film. Due to his previous works involving dysfunctional characters or anti-heroes, I didn't think that he was capable of writing for a character like Superman.

Heck, I'm still surprised that he was able to portray the relationship between Clark/Superman and Lois in such a wholesome and respectful way.

the dynamic between lois and clark was one of the best things about the movie.
and probably best version of clois we got in the movies by far.

when they had that interview scene and it got into a heated back and forth, it felt like how a real couple argues.

i definitely had heated arguments like this with my spouse before.

@Black Narcissus would've called the cops on me :ikyn

i walked out my house like superman walked out lois' apartment!
we are all lois lane and we are all clark kent at one time or another!

Agreed. I also appreciated how the development of their relationship felt both natural and earned by the end of the film.

It felt like an actual payoff to see Lois say that she loves Clark back at the end. The music accompanying that scene was great as well.

I knew he'd knock it out of the park!

i am thinking the hypno-glasses probably can manipulate camera tech so he looks distorted in photos too.

i'm just wondering hows his work badge, state ID, and passport photos look like (not that superman actually needs to drive or fly a plane - but he needs to have these to keep up the charade)
I find it very amusing how the attempt to rationalize the glasses trick just raised more questions than simply rolling with it. :funny:

Did it? Because no one seems to question it but nerds like us. Most non-super fans just rolled with it because it is irrelevant. (and a funny line by Guy)

I was indeed talking about nerds, ahah

But personally, I don't need that kind of explanation (even if I don't mind it here in Superman). As I said in another thread, it's a deal with the author, just as I don't care that no one in Gotham suspects the city's only billionaire, whose family was murdered before his eyes when he was a kid, of being this vengeful vigilante with a bunch of very, very expensive gadgets...

Saw it in theaters one last time last night with one of my closest friends. She’s not a big superhero movie person but she absolutely adored the movie and thought every single role was perfectly cast. She praised David, Rachel, Nick, everyone, and just found it to be such a fun and joyful movie. And as a huge dog lover, she obviously loved everything with Krypto.

As someone who has always been a lot more into superheroes than most of my (less nerdy) friends, it’s just so fun and cool when a movie like this allows me to connect with them in this way. It was so cool that even though she doesn’t live and breathe Superman the way that I do, she still ended up just being enthralled by this film.

This really is a perfect Superman movie. Is it a perfect movie? No. But it’s exactly the Superman movie we needed for a LONG time.

Gunn said in the WIRED autocomplete inteview that Superman can't breath in space. Is he holding his breath when sitting on the Moon with Krypto?

Yeah from what I remember, Superman can hold his breath for two hours at a time. Thats how he can fly around in space but he doesn’t actually breathe in space.

That doesn't seem to be a very comfortable way to just chill in space. I guess he could be wearing something like this because we aren't seeing his face.

There’s nothing TO breathe in space. He can just hold his breath (which humans can’t do in space either, for the record, as it will rupture their lungs) for so long that it’s not concern to him unless he’s doing some long-distance (like, well beyond our orbit) travel.

As soon as he leaves that yellow Sun... He dead.

Generally speaking he's a solar battery, so as long as he doesn't expend his powers in a massive way, his body should have enough solar radiation stored up to last him a while (how long depends on the writer lol). Unless of course he goes somewhere with a Red Sun instead.

Back in the Silver/Bronze(?) times, it was established that Supes didn’t require oxygen to survive. To wit: Supes got all his energy from “Yellow Sun” phlebotinum — and therefore didn’t need to breathe. Thus, he could spend unlimited time in space (or underwater or in toxic atmospheres, etc.).

Later on (in the “de-powered era) this attribute was rescinded/revised. Breathing: now a thing. So for visits to outer space — notwithstanding general invulnerability — Supes would often have to use some sort of self-contained breathing apparatus. …But not always. In iterations without the breathing apparatus, it was stated (or just assumed) that Supes could hold his breath for uncanny durations (many minutes… or several hours?). So in practical/visual terms, not so different from the Silver Age.

In recent cinematic depictions, forays into space have been relatively “brief.” So the technical details of how Supes survives (Silver Age invulnerability vs. extreme breath holding) was probably not worth any attention or exposition.

However… there is an extended space battle sequence In Woman of Tomorrow. But since the book is very Silver Age-y, it’s easy enough to assume that Silver Age “rules” apply. And likewise for the movie adaptation…?
