Syfy Nearing Series Order For "12 Monkeys" Adaptation

SYFY UNCAGES MORE 12 MONKEYS

Critically Acclaimed Time Travelling Thriller From Universal Cable Productions to Return For Second Season

NEW YORK – March 12, 2015 – Syfy announced today that the widely praised adventure thriller 12 Monkeys has been greenlit for a second season, expected to air in 2016.

With Natalie Chaidez prepping her next Syfy series (UCP and Valhalla Productions’ Hunters), Terry Matalas and Travis Fickett (Nikita), co-executive producers and writers of the pilot, will be stepping up to serve as EP/Showrunners. Atlas Entertainment’s Richard Suckle (Suicide Squad, American Hustle, The International) and Charles Roven (Suicide Squad, Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, American Hustle) will continue to executive produce with Atlas’ Jake Kurily producing. Roven served as producer on the original film.

Currently in its first season, 12 Monkeys has reached 15 million viewers to date, and is experiencing record L3 lifts for the network (average L3 lift is 104%). The renewal also comes as the series continues to gain momentum, with its most recent episode (Friday, March 6) seeing an increase of 6% over the prior four weeks, with 1.5 million total viewers.

"We are absolutely committed to 12 Monkeys, and have been incredibly impressed by the outstanding critical and audience praise the series has earned,” said Dave Howe, Syfy President. “The talent both on and off-screen have delivered a series that has us all on the edge of our seats, providing exactly the smart, exciting storytelling Syfy is known for.”

Jeff Wachtel, President and Chief Content Officer, NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment, added, “12 Monkeys is a show that has exceeded expectations at every stage. It’s had a great first season creatively, and is building a dedicated audience. We can’t wait to see where – and when! – Terry and Travis will take us next.”

12 Monkeys stars Aaron Stanford (Nikita, X-Men: The Last Stand, X2), Amanda Schull (Suits, Center Stage) and Kirk Acevedo (Fringe, Oz, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes).

In this Friday’s episode* – the ninth in the 13-part first season – Cole (Aaron Stanford) finds himself in 2017 at the height of the plague. Out of options, Jones (Barbara Sukowa) faces an impossible choice to replace the Core. 12 Monkeys airs Fridays at 9PM ET/PT; the season one finale will air Friday, April 10.

12 Monkeys is produced by Universal Cable Productions in association with Atlas Entertainment, who produced the original Golden Globe winning theatrical film.‎

YES!... I just knew it was gonna make it to a renewal...

Damn Jones. Very good episode. Plus, a little bit of Jennifer never hurts.

The watch at the end is very interesting.

Yeah, the watch resetting was interesting. So basically everything has to play out in the past as it already has. In order to convince Cassie that Cole is from the future the scratch on the watch can't have already occurred.

These cause and effect before the cause timelines are definitely a head scratcher.

Well, the location and state that Cassie dies in in this ep, is exactly how she's found in the future. Since that's the same watch he has in his possession back to 2013, when they first meet, that scratch must not be there in order for Cole to scratch it during their first encounter.

Cool ep. Love that there's so much more to come, with Cole yet to have met Cassie between 2015 and 2017..and Cole still at some point has to go back to 1987…

..i'm curious to know what the letter Cassie gave him said, as she said his life would depend upon it.

I'm thinking it has someting to do with Rasmey possibly trying to kill Jones; maybe Cole tells Cassie between 2015-2017 what happens and tells her to give his 2017 self the letter as a warning, just as he told her where to find him in Chechnya.

Man this show is getting so dark and I love it! But damn Jones is a monster. She knew they had cured the newest virus and lied to get the core plus murdered all those people. Brutal. I think the glaring hole in the story so far is why didn't Jones ask for any version of the cure or the data on how to replicate and then give it to cole so he could go back in time and give it to Cassie? BOOM, problem solved, epidemic over, roll the credits. That is a pretty stupid and glaring mistake if you ask me, especially considering how smart Jones is supposed to be

Good point. I think the underlying theme of time travel is that you can't change things. But then again, maybe the technology needed to come up with the cure isn't available in 2015..as, as is noted by Jones and the time machine, 2043 is more advanced technologically.

What good would it do to have the newest vaccine to an aggressively evolving virus. Seems like the best cure is still that of wiping it out at the source?

Well that's the point of a vaccine, it nullifies the virus therefore it doesn't have a chance to mutate. Also if the cured any version of the virus with a bunch of scrapped together computers from when the world wasn't garbage than the folks in 2017 shouldn't have a problem replicating it.

The point was that it showed that by curing the third mutation, Speahead's claims of being able to predict and cure future mutations is possible. At that point, it showed that Spearhead's project was more vialbe than Splinter's.

Spearhead's cure wouldn't bring back Jones daughter (or son- can't remember which), who was lost during the virus outbreak which is why Jones wants to stop the virus from even occurring.

Jones is not evil. She's just obsessed to the point that she'll kill for the greater good.

She's damn close. I mean, she literally doesn't care what she does, because her reasoning is that when she succeeds, it will be reversed. They've burned one of the two power cores, and it doesn't seem to be getting closer to stopping the plague. Is the hope they are going for worth sacrificing the future Spearhead was building?

Yes, because her daughter would still be alive, she/humanity would have no memory of the plague, and there would be no need for a 'future at Spearhead'.

But by taking a cure back in time she would still accomplish all of her goals and it would have been much easier than trying to solve the mystery of the 12 monkeys. It's a pretty glaring flaw in the show

Wow, so Ramsey could be the Witness!? This just opens up a whole new can of worms now.

Aw man, the bromance is over. It's now the battle between best friends. What's up with the plant changing colors after Cole splinters?

Yep.

Although, according to old Jennifer from 2043, Reilly is a 'good friend' to Cole, so maybe when it's all said and done he sacrifices himself to save Cole at some point either in 1987 or sometime around 2015.

I'm more curious to see how Cole continues to splinter, despite Jones saying that this was his last one; maybe the future gets altered again and they come up with a better means of helping Cole deal with it more….?

Love future Jennifer's hat.

Jennifer seems to know a lot about what is happening. I'm curious about that.

Jennifer said that he was a good friend...not now, but soon. I don't think she was referring to Cole but that he was a good friend to her. I'm thinking Ramsey befriends Jennifer after the 2017 outbreak and pretty much clues her in on what's transpired since Cole vanished in front of her in 2015.

How many more eps are left in this season? Is it 3? There's so much more to cover. The letter Cassie gives Cole in 2017 about saving his life, Ramsey/the necklace, etc, the red forest, the visions Cole keeps having about the broken milk glass…..i know the writers have a hell of a time keeping up with all the time looping story lines!

I'm curious if the tall man played by Nooning is more than human, as he seems to have superhuman strength.

I thought that was an illusion; a residual effect of the drug they gave Cassie a few eps back.

And why the hell didn't Ramsey just smash the remaining injections..?!!!!!!

Didn't those visions start after the timeline changed in 2043 when Cassie died? For some reason Cole's still trying to reconcile that alternate past/reality.

It's kind of hard to determine what exactly Jennifer is saying but it sounded like she mentions that plants always change when He (Cole) leaves. It may actually be happening and not just in Cassie's mind.

^ just to clarify want I'm talking 'bout. I decided to rewatch the scene between Ramsey & Jennifer. During her babble she says "Some come for my herb....Gives pictures you know? Pictures in your head you can't erase. Hmm...They don't work unless the leaves are red. And they're not red unless He's been there."

I know I'm late to this, but I'm extremely happy that its renewed for season 2. I'm really diggin this show. I missed it on Friday, but I'll watch it later tonight.

I think it may be a byproduct of the splintering serum. Leland Goines was practically salivating over Cole's bloodwork in the premiere.

Sounds almost like what happens with the red forest mind trips.
