The dark knight changed the way the world looks at superhero movies. Enough said. I don't hear the people in the film industry talk about the avengers like they do with the dark knight.

TDK, for having way more substance. To me The Avengers is a pretty average movie. Nothing particularly great about it.

The Dark Knight, no question. Almost everything is superb about it, the acting, the action, the plot. What haven't been said about this notable movie?

The Avengers was fun and all, but once you've seen it, the plot is not particularly interesting. There are a few scenes (like the dialogue between Black Widow and Loki or the scene with Tony Stark and Bruce Banner) that are good, but other than the action I don't find much to re-watch.

I don't really want to choose because I love both films to death but I'd have to go with The Dark Knight because it was a game changer in every sense of the world & elevated comic book movies to be at the level they are now. It's just a piece of cinematic gold & Heath Ledger's Joker remains as probably of the best villains in cinema history...not just comic book films.

Are you even serious?

There is no comparison. No Marvel film sniffs ANY of TDK trilogy. Apart from maybe the original Iron Man.

Uh, well now an ancient thread has been needlessly bumped, I voted The Dark Knight.

The Dark Knight was fairly transcendent movie, but the Avengers completely changed Hollywood (not necessarily for the better), by making every studio scramble to build a shared universe, so I voted Avengers.

That's a pretty bold and misguided statement. I'd argue that CA: TWS and CA: CW would rival movies in that trilogy.

Winter Soldier is up there (though maybe a .2 outta 10 shy) with TDK, imo, and many other Marvel films beat TDKR

Dark Knight legitimized and elevated the genre, but Avengers changed the entire industry

I never will get the love for The Winter Soldier. Yes, it had more depth and slightly more stakes than your usual MCU film but it still plays it safe. Safer than any of the Nolan films, to be sure. With that said, this isn't necessarily a bad thing, Batman v Superman tried to be profound and well... it might be the worst superhero movie of the last 19 years.

But my point is The Winter Soldier is still beholden to the Marvel formula, it just sprinkled in some ideas that it didn't see through with in regards to semi-commenting on our surveillance culture, and otherwise maintained Marvel's friendly disposition.

Anyway, I will second the sentiment that no Marvel Studios film is in the same ballpark as any of the Nolan Batman movies. Even if The Dark Knight Rises and Batman Begins have their flaws, each one was Nolan swinging for the fences, and in my opinion he connected every time. Marvel swings for singles and they also connect every time (save for Thor 2, Iron Man 2, and Avengers 2). But there is a reason nobody outside of the comic book fan community talks about these movies as individual experiences a year or two after their release. For everyone else it is just a blur of Marvel movies. Quite intentionally, they are more like television episodes than actual standalone films.

The Nolan films are quite well done, no question. But they are elevated to an exalted plane by fanboys who get giddy over the "adult" appeal of the films. Marvel has put out few movies that, in my opinion, are comparable in quality to Nolan's output. But the "super serial" nature of the DK films wins out for fans that are a smidge embarrassed to be obsessed with adventures of impossible humans doing good while clad in themed outfits.

No one outside the comic book fan community is debating or answering polls regarding comicbook films that were released in the prior decade. That's just happening here. And the blur of Marvel films may seem like (sniff) TV, but they work as both stand alone features and as one part in a series. Just like the vaunted TDK trilogy.

^^ It's not just MCU movies, CBMs in general ain't up there with TDKT. These shared universe movies are good but they just don't stack up against Nolan's Bat movies.

TDK for me. I love The Avengers too though. Even today, I still remember how much I enjoyed it the first time I watched it.

IMO Civil War vs TDK is a better comparison (and I give it to TDK by a fraction). Just sayin'

Difference of opinions are what the Hype is all about
I, personally, will never get even tolerating TDKR, I thought it was such a tremendous letdown.
I also don't think BB or TDKR really tried anything all that special that makes them less "safe" than the Marvel films. TDK? Yes, and that's why it has the reputation it does, and why I said it elevated the genre. But BB is your standard origin story/training montage with a fun twist thrown in with the Ras Al Ghul stuff, and TDKR had super shallow socio-economic messaging behind an uninteresting plot and villain.

Winter Soldier's message felt more relevant and pressing to me, and when you combine the already successful and enjoyable Marvel 'formula' with more thought and depth, I think it easily stands above Begins or Rises.

See above
But to use your baseball analogy (also use to be my signature!)
I'd say Marvel hits mostly doubles and triples, with maybe 3 home runs, but they also hit basically every time
DC is all over the place, and even their designated hitter Chris Nolan only batted a .667, though he got a triple and a grand slam in his three at-bats

The Dark Knight to me is the best comic book movie ever made. As a franchise, I think Avengers is stronger just because it has more to it, but TDK will always be my #1.

The Avengers is the best and entertaining cbm movie, but Cap Civil War still number 1 & EPIC, and TDK is good and dark

Maybe when measured against the unreasonable expectations people placed on it but when judged as a simple movie, It's well above average.

As for "uninteresting villains", Hardy's Bane is easily a more compelling villain than pretty much all non-Netflix MCU villains currently.

many other Marvel films beat TDKR

The only films you can argue do that are the Avengers,Winter Soldier and maybe Iron Man and Guardians (TDKR still has a better villain than both).

TDKR easily beats everything else.

I could argue that the worst one-shot from Marvel is better than TDKR and not be wrong (or right) in any objective way if that was my opinion. It isn't, but my point is that a good movie is defined by subjective opinion, nothing else (unless you define the parameters for a given discussion).
