I know, I know... Cyclops should have saved her / killed her / whatever'd her. It didn't happen.

Watching that scene (and I open up my file of The Last Stand just for this scene a lot of the time), it just wreaks so much of X-Men'ny goodness.

Cuz despite the fact that it's Jean and Scott's love, etc... etc... Wolverine DOES love Jean, and he WOULD do that for her.

I just totally love this scene, and it's one of my favorite scenes in the entire trilogy. Jean going ballistic, the visuals of the water rising out of the San Francisco Bay, Wolverine turning around, witnessing the destruction, and turning to face Jean. And even though we didn't get a true Phoenix effect, she looks so ****ing badass here. I liked the exorcist, demonic look, highlighted by the brightness of the flames around her. It wasn't a true Phoenix effect (and we should have gotten it, I agree), but I think it's a damned good substitute, and she looks totally badass here.

Then Wolverine marching up to her, his skin ripping, displaying his adamantium skeleton... as he struggles up to her.

God damn, everything about that entire sequence is just so god damn mother****ing badass.

I love the Magneto terrorist tape bit, and both of his speeches, and many other things in the film, but this sequence has probably gotta be my favorite sequence in the entire film.

The final battle is balls to the wall bad ass (the best climax of the 3 films), only to be capped off by this powerful moment, both visually and emotionally.

This is the scene that now, long after my first initial viewing, that just friggin' blows my mind, and I get a bit choked up over.

Yea yea yea, it should have been Cyclops, I've heard that (and said it) a bazillion times.

But the sequence is just "right". It's one of those moments that just slaps you across the face and makes you realize that this is the god damned X-Men on the big screen that you're watching. And it feels good.

I am also in agreement with almost everything you say! I really wish we could have had more scenes from Phoenix in the second half of the movie but I think we should be happy that we got any Phoenix at all! And I agree, Phoenix flame would have been AWESOME but I loved the effect they used instead. Although, I prefer the Jean vs Xavier scene just slightly over this one. :-)

I have to admit, i didnt like the scene, not only because it wasnt Cyclops, but because Wolverine has NEVER healed that fast in the previous movies or the cartoons (as far as i can remember anyway). So once again they messed up on continuity.

I liked that final scene too. It was a nicely done scene in my opinion. The scene couldn't have been so artistic had it been Cyclops rather than Wolverine, who wouldn't have been able to withstand the power of Phoenix on any level.

Of course, Jean obviously wasn't trying that hard. She was able to rip others apart in a fraction of a second, where with Wolverine she seemed to attempt to do it much slower, giving him time to heal.

Plus, had she not wanted him to reach her, she could have telekinetically thrown him several miles away.

I suppose that was the Jean inside fighting against it.

I liked the Scene...but I wished he didn't say I love you...he could have said, "be well" in the novel. other than that, I cried when Jean cried "Save me..." and the look on her face was so depressing... gotta hand it to Janssen for those emotional scenes - the part when she says "Kill me...before I kill someone else" and tears fall out of her eyes, and then when she says "Kill me," again; when she screams "No! Stop it" and the glass shatters on her and she turns her head away. Oh and when Xavier says "You are a danger to yourself.." it cuts to a shot of Janssen about to lose control over her emotions. Oh and might I add the deleted scene from X1 of Jean and Xavier...how I wished that scene was included in the final cut of the film. "I know...I lost control..." "I just don't want to see you get hurt." "What is it?" "I sometimes wonder if I should have involved all of you into this. Just let you live your own lives." "Well...I can't speak for the others...but it wouldn't have been much of a life without you." then she gets up and kisses his bald head and leaves. Man, what a strong and an emotional scene. aww. It showed the bond between Teacher and student. sends shivers down my spine. Even though those scenes/shots of Jean in X3 I mentioned earlier in my post are short but I still felt how she felt by understanding how she fits into the X-Men universe emotionally and ... damn my mind just went blank. lol.

it was hard watching jean kill xavier...... its just one of those scenes thats so depressing...

its so eerie........and the music just makes it worse(in a good way)

thats because phoenix was controling the healing factor dude, she was like testing him or something. and besides cyclops cant do that maybe he loves her and everything but he is too weak al he has is that optic blast.

i think the scene was also very japanese.......the cinematography and all the drama/pace reminded me of some anime stuff

If Scott was in Logan's place, he would end up looking like this, for instance... and I've said it before...do you really want to see a deformed scott looking like this?

for me, no way. Too creepy.

I liked that scene a lot, I especially loved it afterhe stabbed he and it was a wide shot of all the stuff floating around them then slowly falling, that was really good. The only thing I would have changed is Wolverine saying I love you, I dont really mind it that much, but I think he should have just went ahead and stabbed her w/out saying anything.

you call that sexy? LOL ... meh... well either way if Cyclops came back, I'm sure they would have gone a different route and if they did...I would have done something different. For instance...while Wolverine is distracting her,
Scott would have sneaked up from behind and cupped his hand over her mouth and as Jean struggles in his grip, they lose balance and together they fall towards the slippery slopes to the bank near the edge of the river...it takes a moment for the two of them to come out of it and Scott is there by her side while she moans..."Jean. Its okay. Its me."
... Theres more, but I'll leave it at that for now.

Okay. I better shut up. lol. I'll keep these ideas to myself for future X3 re-writes.

dude im just saying but that scene look like a way to bond the two characters more than they are, you know what i mean. starting for the fact that they didnt respect her relationship since movie 1 so maybe if there is a X4 with Famke and Hugh on it, they will take that chemestry to another level (always in a PG-13 rating of course) and for cyclops well Emma Frost.

Come on this is a work of fiction. I'm sure the writers (well...maybe not THESE writers :p ) could have come up with something that could have allowed Cyclops to defeat Phoenix.

I'm tired of this excuse.

I would have shot Jean in the ass... to get her to snap out of it. lol Just imagine what her expression would be like if it happened...lol priceless indeed.

aha sure what ever to see a close up of her ass! (Men!!!!!!)

... uh thats not what I meant. What would happen if Scott shot her in the ass...? hmm yeah it might snap her out of it or it might piss her off even more...

i remember in the X2 commentary something about jean blowing her brains out in front of scott with a shotgun

uh... not a shotgun, Scott's optic blasts. That- I would love to have seen. It would have been an emotional scene between the two...

I'm glad to see others got some enjoyment out of the final battle. Me? I felt it was just overhyped, not emotional or dark enough really.

Ratner should've taken some tips from Peter Jackson and Mel Gibson on how to do a battle. Don't get me wrong the build-up was decent and the shot of the X-Men lined up for battle was great, but other than that? It was too quick and just seemed to be your typical battle(IMO).

As far as the emotional scene with Jean/Logan? Yeah, yeah, you can say he loved her and all that, but it wasn't true to the source material and there could've been ways to have Cyclops save her.

Personally I would've preferred that Cyclops walk up to her, then all of a sudden you would see pain on his face and you'd get the feeling he's about to be vaporized, but he continues walking up to her overcoming her powers long enough to do what must be done to save her.

Everyone has different tastes obviously, however, the scene itself didn't do anything for me on an emotional or comic book level.

I guess my expectations were too high. When I think of "The Last Stand", I think of a battle that is much like The Two Towers or Return of the King based. The potential was there for the final battle to be powerful and climatic at the same time, but it was just wasted potential.

I would've loved to have seen a Juggernaut vs. Colossus battle, Angel flying into the sky taking out other mutants, Iceman doing the ice-slide while fighting Pyro, and of course Cyclops taking out buildings and mutants with his optic blasts.

All in all I give the final battle 5/10. Not horrible, but not great either.

How anyone gets choked up over it is beyond me. I hate to say it, but I've seen more emotion in a Dragonball Z episode than in this supposed "battle".
