Right now Messiah CompleX is rocking the house, critically and commercially speaking. The fact the event is a huge success, its undeniable. But, what about the future? What has Marvel in store for us after this amazing crossover? Everybody knows new books will be added, some will get cancelled, rosters will change and new creative teams will come onboard. On this sophomore edition of State of the Art youll find a definite guide with everything there is to know, and has already been confirmed by different media, about the x-books 2008.
Uncanny X-Men
Writer: Ed Brubaker
Pencils and Covers: Mike Choi
After years of (Adjectiveless) X-Mens reign as the main continuity book for all x-things, Uncanny will reclaim its rightful place as the franchises flagship title in 2008. Ed Best Writer of 2007 Brubaker will be helming it with Mike Everybody's Beautiful Choi (of Witchblade and X-Men #204 fame) on art duties. Their first arc, Divided We Stand, will see the core X-Men characters in a whirlwind of non-stop action fighting several different villains across the globe. Emma and Scott will take some holidays in the Savage Land while Nightcrawler, Wolverine and Colossus will be travelling around Europe. Long time absentee and founding father Angel will also have a prominent role in it. And with Choi handling the pencils, expect even Wolverine to look like someone from a perfume add.
While the book will focus on the lives of different characters, its been confirmed it wont feature a defined roster until Julys Uncanny X-Men #500. The aniversary issue will turn the status quo on its head and according to Brubaker it is really going to freak X-Men fans out, hopefully in a good way. The writer is going to do something hes asked himself, why has this never happened?, since he was 13. He also confirmed the team will be pursuing Cyclops vision of what the X-Men should do.
X-Men: Legacy
Writer: Mike Carey
Pencils: Scott Eaton
Covers: David Finch
In 2008, (Adjectiveless) X-Men will finally get an adjective and change its name to X-Men: Legacy. Despite no information whatsoever about this book has been divulged in its solicitations, its been confirmed X-Men: Legacy is going to be a 12-issue miniseries, divided in 3 different arcs. The book will focus on Professor X and "will redefine Xavier's status in some very profound ways", said its writer, Mike Carey. Besides Xavier, who will be pulled away from the core x-teams for a long time, X-Men: Legacy will also feature Rogue and Gambit facing a number of mutant menaces. According to Carey, the couple will appear "in a way that moves their relationship and their personal journeys forward very significantly". The writer also noted that readers can expect to find revelations and mysteries hidden in the minds of five of the X-Mens most powerful allies and enemies, as well as important plans for Magneto. Concerning other characters, Carey said he had big plans for someone from New X-Men and hopes he can bring her in to his book. He also confirmed Iceman will have a cameo in Legacy.
Mike Carey, whos done a great job with the franchise as (Adjectiveless) X-Men proved to be the most important title prior to Messiah, will write Legacy for at least 12 issues and says that "one of the themes is how the past continues to affect us, especially where questions hanging over from the past have been left unanswered". Artwise, the title is going to feature rotating art teams, being Scott Eaton (Endangered Species One-Shot and X-Factor #25-27) the penciller for its first issues. Chris Bachalo, you will be missed.
Young X-Men
As no solicitations for New X-Mens February and Marchs issues were published, New X-Men fans were desperate. They finally calmed, when David Gabriel, Marvels Senior Vice-President of Sales and Circulation, casually mentioned in a press release concerning Messiah CompleX sell-outs, Young X-Men as a new title for 2008.
So far no creative team or roster has been confirmed.
Astonishing X-Men: Second Stage
Writer: Warren Ellis
Pencils and Covers: Simone Bianchi
After Joss Whedon and John Cassaday wrap their outstanding run up with Februarys Giant Size Astonishing X-Men, Warren Ellis and Italian paintor Simone Bianchi will take over. Its been hinted their first issue will be released in July, coinciding with Uncanny X-Men #500 in whats been dubbed an "X-Month".
First off, I want Joss and John's run to stand contained and inviolate, said Ellis and added, Second Stage, therefore, picks up none of the themes or story points in their run. It's a clean break. It also gives me a clear field of fire. The writer also declared Astonishing will continue to take place in its own continuity bubble without being affected by whats going on in the other x-books. The roster hasnt been properly confirmed but its believed it will feature the same one from Whedons run, plus X-23.
The franchises editors have also stated (despite no one actually believes them) shipping wont be a problem this time around as Bianchi has been given a lot of time in advance to draw at least the first 6 issues.
X-Force
Writers: Craig Kyle and Chris Yost
Pencils and Covers: Clayton Crain
This new black-ops title will see the light of day in February 2008. Marvel promises a lot of blood will be shed in this book and with (children killers) Kyle and Yost helming the project nobody doubts it wont be true. Led by non-other than Wolverine; X-23, Warpath and Wolfsbanes first target will be the mutant hating cult called The Purifiers. With one of their own already fallen by #2, expect new members to be added to the teams roster quite soon.
This is artist extraordinaire Clayton Crains (Sensational Spider-Man #40) first ongoing in over a year and for whats been seen in previews and covers, it is shaping up to be one of the best looking x-books out there.
X-Factor
Writer: Peter David
Pencils: Pablo Raimondi and Valentine De Landro
Covers : Glenn Fabry
After Messiah CompleX wraps, there will be serious ramifications that will strike to the core of not only their mission, but their very location, said comic book legend Peter David. So far its only been confirmed Darwin, the mutant adaptoid, will be joining the team while Rahne is leaving it to join X-Force.
Issue #28 will see the return of fan-favourite Argentinean artist Pablo Raimondi and will be a tie-in to Uncannys Divided We Stand. Valentine De Landro will fulfill art duties for #29. Whos pencilling #30 still remains a mystery.
Cable
Writer: Duane Swierczinski
Pencils and Covers: Ariel Olivetti
Duane Swierczinski, the writer behind the novel The Wheelman, promises Cables new ongoing, set to start in March 2008, will deal with a fair amount of Messiah CompleXs fallout and contains lots of time travel. But fear not faithful reader as Swierczinski has said hes running in the opposite direction from all the predictable ways time travel has been played out in recent years.
Throughout the whole series Cable, whose internal conflict will be at the center of every story, is going to butt heads with a new nemesis who, the writer said, cant be considered exactly a villain.
Wolverine
Writer: Jason Aaron (#62-65), C.B. Cebulski (#66-?)
Pencils and Covers: Ron Garney (#62-65), David Finch (#66-?)
The sole x-book without a regular creative team throughout 2007 will continue to be just that in 2008. Rising star Jason Aaron (Scalped) will team up with Ron Garney (Amazing Spider-Man) for an arc Marvels solicitations for the book call Get (classified)". Nevertheless, its been (very) recently confirmed the arcs real title is Get Mystique. It will be a 4-part epilogue to Messiah CompleX in which Wolverine will settle one final score with the blue shapeshifter, Mystique.
Junes #66 will mark the begging of Cebulski and Finchs arc, that will have our favourite Canadian facing The Hand in Japan after Elektra was revealed as a Skrull.
Wolverine Origins and a new Deadpool ongoing
Writer: Daniel Way
Pencils: Steve Dillon
Covers: Simone Bianchi
It seems one of 2007s worst books will continue to be so in 2008 as Way and Dillon are up for one more arc. The Deep End (#21-25) will feature Deadpool, the merc with a mouth, whos been hired by a government agency to kill Logan. After said arc is done, Way and Dillon are to start a new Deadpool ongoing that will replace the Cable and Deadpool series that will meet its end with February's #50.
Rumor has it Wolverine Origins is one of the x-books getting cancelled in 2008 as no new creative team nor future plans for it have been revealed for the time being.
Expect new information concerning the X-Men's 2008 to be released as Messiah CompleX reaches its end, and know for sure, ICS will be there to cover it
