The Accent

Which Accent Should Doctor Strange Have?

  • American (Like the comics)

  • British (Benedict's natural voice)

British all the way since we all want to hear Cumberbatch's true voice and not a fake accent.

I know that Strange is American but for whatever reason, I've always read him with a British accent.

everything about this is fiction. it's all fiction...

did people not want to see batman begins because of christian bale's fake accent?

Benedict can pull this off. If he can pull Smaug off. He can pull anyhring off.

I want to see Cumberbatch do an American accent but have the Dr. Strange's origins be British just to piss everyone off.

A Brit dude who's ashamed of his roots and wants to be viewed as an American. :funny:

Literally it can only be a negative for him to do an American accent, I don't care that he is an actor or that he can do an American accent, there is no specific reason for Strange to be American, in fact you know it might help broaden the MCU if not every superhero is American bar BP.

I've reconsidered my earlier position and now think that Cumberbatch should keep his normal accent. Being American is not one of Dr. Strange's defining traits so I don't think it would be a big deal if they made him British in the MCU.

They'll do british because Doctor Strange is supposed to be wise. And British people(mostly do to their accents) are thought to be incredibly wise, it's a common stereotype. But in Strange's case I think it'd work for the best.

I'd rather he be a dumb American.

I've seen some discussion about this, so I decided to make a thread about it. Should Benedict keep his British accent for the role, or should he speak with an American accent like Strange does in the comics?

Here's a clip with Cumberbatch using an American accent, for reference:

And one where he retains his British one for Star Trek Into Darkness:

Whichever one sounds better for the use of magic.

if the character is american in the comics then there is no specific reason to change that if the actor is capable of retaining it.

After reading through pretty much all of the posts so far on this forum, I now know one thing for sure...
I want Captain Britain!
Maybe it's just so we can see the Britmobile...
At least show the Britmobil in the background of a scene or something! C'mon!
(Yes... you don't have to tell me. DOnt ruin my fantasized dreams!)

As for Strange's accent, I have two probably equally pulling arguments... agaisnt eachother.
His american accent would make it so he isn't known as the Sherlock guy or seen as a more popular actor playing a less popular hero. However, his British accent I feel would actually make a lot of sense, and make him actually more like the comic books. His american accent is a bit weird. It's not like it's unnatural, but it isn't the right voice for him. His british accent makes him sound more like the Dr. Strange I've always known. (Always as in since I watched the 2007 cartoon. :P) I feel he will be seen as Cumberbatch instead of seen as Dr. Strange though... and with his american accent I literally barley recognise him, it's like he's a different person! With an american accent he would be separated from his past roles, but not seem as much like strange. With his british accent, he would sound more like strange, but be seen as Cumberbatch.

In the end I have to say...
umm...
idk...
Keep the accent. Yeah... sure. I'll go with that for now.

Y'know what? If he can say penguin with an American accent then maybe he should be american.
XD
Like, without practice, he just walks up to a stand and marvel asks him to say "penguin" (though they would just show him a card of the word) with an american accent.
I trust that he'll get it wrong, at least the first time trying.
:P

He won't be seen as Cumberbatch if he keeps the accent, at least to me. That's silly. If he does a good job of becoming the character that is Strange(which he probably will), people won't see Cumberbatch, they'll see Strange.

What I'm saying is according to your logic then the same goes for Sherlock. Maybe I didn't make clear what I meant to say, as an actor he will be seen as a certain person. When I see Robert Downey Jr. I think ironman. But when I see Cumberbatch I see Sherlock. The only way for that to change is one of two ways: Either Cumberbatch changes his accent to make it seem like he is a different person, or he plays such a great Dr. Strange that he is seen as Dr. Strange afterwards.

This is what I feel will happen in the long run. I think more people will see Strange's movie than those who viewed Sherlock, and Strange will be the role that people truly see him as. Only time will tell, though.

Actually not likely, if more people see Strange than see Sherlock, then Strange would be looking at Avengers type numbers.

Sherlock viewing figures worldwide is way over a hundred million.

Uhmm when I watched The Imitation Game I didn't see Benedict I saw Turing come to life.

True. After all, I'll bet most people see Chris Evans as Captain America, and not the human torch. I personally do, but I never watched the Fantastic 4 movies... I hope the reboot is good, because I will probably watch them!
There is of course the fact that over the years he has changed some, his old haircut looked completely different. My guess is that if Cumberbatch grows a beard like Dr. Strange, he will look different enough.
Just more reason to believe he should keep his accent! Even though it would be unique for him to try an american one, it would kinda defeat the point of getting him to act for Dr. Strange, besides the fact that he usually plays characters like Strange.

Captain America: Snowpiercer was such a mischaracterization. Cap would never eat babies and his power levels were all messed up. Good job Marvel.

Because Harrison Ford wasn't able to be Solo, Indy and Deckard, people only saw Ford as Han Solo :o

This is ridiculous. Cumby is Sherlock as well as he will be Stephen Strange
