BvS The Alfred Pennyworth Casting Thread

How about a more updated Alfred, like in Beware the Batman? I wouldn't mind a capable Alfred, who was a former MI6, can take care of himself and helps to keep Bruce sharp.

**** no to secret agent Alfred. Terrible. I hate Jason Stratham Alfred. :down And an Alfred who trains/keeps Bruce sharp becomes too much of an Obi-Wan type for me. Bruce is a self made man and needs none of this crap.

That said, whoever suggested Timothy Dalton, I do think that is kind of cool in its own way, but I really want someone closer to the Michael Gough/Alan Napier or even animated TAS Alfred, personally. I mean actual ****ing Alfred and not secret agent ass kicker Alfred or Michael freakin' actor-so-humongous-he-overshadows-the-part-he-is-playing-in-this-case Caine, who is all I saw when I looked at "Alfred" in TDK trilogy.

These "nameless" old guys is who Alfred is to me. (Not "Al Pacino" or some ****)

I'm surprised at some of the relatively youthful suggestions. Not that Brosnan isn't a good actor, but he's only just turned 60. Assuming Affleck and Brosnan play close to they ages, it would have made Alfred in his late 20's when Thomas and Martha were murdered. I think Alfred should be some years older than that.
Dalton would be better for Alfred.

:funny:

And on the subject of Pierce as Alfred.

I think he's a better pick than Dalton. Pierce has that badass aspect to him. But I think, it's what I've seen him in films with children and based on him raising children after his wife died in real life, Pierce is a natural fatherly figure. Out of all actors, he's the only one I can imagine seeing as Alfred sacrificing his life to raise a friends disturbed child.

Then with the badass aspect, be accepting to Bruce fighting criminals as Batman.
You say Dalton can't be bad-ass?

Then a question for all of you: Should Alfred be able to punch some criminals in their face?

Dalton is bad ass. I just think Pierce is the better father figure, which is why I prefer him as Alfred.

If you cast relatively younger, you'd have him around for sequels and such. Plus he could play it a little older. I just think Brosnan is the perfect combination of everything I'd like to see in Alfred. Just slap a mustache on him.

I threw in a beard too.

Those are good reasons you brought up, but my inclination towards an older actor like John Hurt or even Max von Sydow is because I wouldn't want Alfred for more than one film, or at most one Superman/Batman and one Batman stand alone.

This is just my personal opinion, but I would not be against killing off a major character like Alfred in a way that is significant and meaningful to the plot. As this universe grows with more heroes culminating with JL, Batman is going to be spending less time in Gotham. His death would bring closure to the character, and I would hate to see Dalton or Brosnan's talent wasted in possible future appearances is you only see him when Batman needs to stop at the Batcave to restock.

Also, I really thought they would kill Alfred in TDKR, and that didn't happen, so I'm sort of carrying that over, too.

Funny. There were/are so many different and conflicting choices for characters like Batman(who I am very happy with the person they chose) and Lex Luthor. Whereas there are so many great choices for Alfred and Jim Gordon. It's going to be a very interesting next couple of months. :)

If we are getting a Batman in his 40's, shouldn't Alfred be pretty damn old in this movie? Would he even still be alive? :wow:

You could assume he's 25 - 30 years older than Bruce. So that puts him in the 65 - 70 range.

My current list of potential Alfred's(in no order):
Alan Rickman
Bill Nighy
Timothy Dalton
Pierce Brosnan
John Hurt
Terrence Stamp(long shot I know)
Jonathan Pryce
Max Von Sydow

I want him to be Earth 1 Alfred.

I would love to see the Alfred of "Earth One." A lot of elements I'd love to see incorporated into this new reboot to be honest. Still keep the core story but it'd be nice to have a mixture of "Year One" and "Earth One" IMO.

Just add George Lazenby, and we will all be fine. :woot:

The only man I see doing that is Malcolm McDowell... and maybe Rickman but he would do it in a b****y way.

McDowell would own that role with ease. McDowell is my second pick for Alfred next to Dalton, both I think would be a nice change from the previous big screen Alfred's.

I don't really want BTB Alfred, or the Earth-1 version.

He'd be too badass for my taste.

Caine's soft and less understanding take was perfect for TDKT's story of Batman not lasting forever. Alfred there wanted Bruce to live a happy life, which he did.

This time around, Alfred should be more understanding to Bruce's war on crime. He shouldn't be as gentle. Both men are soldiers fighting a war, and Alfred should respect Bruce's choice, like everyone should encourage a soldier out on the battlefield.
I don't necessarily want Alfred as violent as that take, but I want him to be more engaging in Batman's affairs and mission. Also throwing in his schoolboy humour of insults, to relieve himself of the manic situation he's in with Bruce. It's a force of habit of his ;)

which is precisely why I lean towards Dalton instead of McDowell, I think he could pull exactly what you described without going overboard.

If we're going the Michael Gough , Michael Caine, and Alan Napier route , then would go with acting vet Christopher Plummer. If we're going the more badass route than I'd go with Dalton .
