The All-Star Marvel RPG
Character Application
Character you would like to play: First Sergeant Jean Grey, codename:
Marvel Girl.
Powers: Jean Grey is an Omega-level telepath and telekinetic. The exact extent of her power is unknown, but it is believed to be nigh limitless.
Basic history of the character (Up until this point): Jean Grey was born in Maryland, and for the most part she lived an unassuming life. Her good looks and electric personality made her the toast of her high school, where she was crowned Homecoming Queen. Her mutant abilities truly began to manifest when she turned eighteen. She accidentally erased the thoughts and memories of her high school sweetheart, leaving him in a vegetative state. Jean was persecuted until the day Charles Xavier found her.
Sensing the danger that the girl posed if left untrained, Xavier convinced Jean's parents to enroll her in his Institute in Westchester. There, Jean found peace, and Xavier closely monitored her development. Jean went on to earn a medical degree before enrolling in Colonel Haller's new program: the X-Men.
As one of the charter members of the X-Men, Jean served as First Sergeant under Captain Scott Summers - with whom she had an unauthorized relationship. Jean served primarily as the team's medical doctor, while also acting as an emissary on recruitment missions and taking on a role as team therapist. Most recently, she was captured by the Brotherhood of Mutants following an attack on the White House.
Why Have You Chosen That Character?: Jean's current situation is an interesting one. She's a captive of the Brotherhood, but she's also the key to their latest and greatest plot for mutant supremacy. She's getting a chance to see behind enemy lines from a unique perspective.
What Do You Plan On Doing With This Character (IE: How are you changing him or her?): Well, as with all the X-Men, Jean is part of the military rank-and-file now. She was second-in-command behind Cyclops, which makes their relationship all the more illicit. Jean is still coming into her own with her power, and she'll soon realize how powerful she can be.
Two Complete Sentences Explaining What You Can Bring To This RPG (As A Player): Unlimited power! /Palpatine. But, seriously, I guess I'm a team player. I like to help shape this little world of ours, and I'm always open to ideas? (For example: let's destroy this question and never bring it back.)
Please provide a small sample post in the format you wish to portray your character in (Minimum three paragraphs/one line of dialogue, maximum six paragraphs):
Silence. When my powers first manifested, I never thought I'd get to enjoy it again. The trouble with reading minds is that you often hear more than you'd like. Until Professor Xavier found me, I thought I'd go through the rest of my life hearing
other people's thoughts in my head. He taught me to block it all out, to control it. And so I can sit again in silence, concentrating on my
own mind.
I pick up the glass of water at the far end of the room with my mind. It
sounds a lot harder than it is. I've had people ask me what telekinesis feels like, and I've had trouble explaining it. It's like grabbing something without moving your hand. I turn the glass over, watching the liquid start to tumble. That's when I reach out again and freeze it in midair. I slide the water out of the glass, setting the glass down gently on the table. I turn the water over in midair and shape it into a neat little orb.
"Sergeant Grey, a word?"
At the interruption, I lose focus and drop the orb of water. It hits the ground with a splash. I hide my annoyance as I turn to face Colonel Haller. I stand up, guiding a towel over to the wet spot on the ground with my mind.
"Yes, Colonel?"
Colonel Haller frowns.
"Sergeant, you are aware that fraternizing with another member of the team is not allowed?"
"Of course, sir."
"Then, your relationship with Captain Summers--"
"I don't follow, sir," I interrupt suddenly. I hold my ground, not budging an inch.
"Captain Summers and I maintain a strictly businesslike relationship."
"Sergeant Grey, this is no time for games. If you think I don't know what's going on between you two..." He trails off, clearly trying not to lose his temper. After taking a moment to collect himself, he continues,
"It ends, Sergeant. Immediately. I will not have you jeopardizing the team."
"With all due respect, sir, I don't see any reason to believe that we're jeopardizing anything. And while fraternization is forbidden by your rules, there's nothing in the code book which strictly forbids it. So if you care to dismiss your first- and second-in-command based on an off-the-books conduct ruling..."
"Enough! You forget your place, Sergeant." Colonel Haller glares at me.
"Don't think for one second that the rules don't apply to you because of your power. I am your commanding officer, and I have given you a direct order."
I stand completely immobile, biting my own tongue.
"Yes, sir."
