The Amazing Spider-Man 2 The Amazing Spider-Man 2 - User Review Thread! - SPOILERS! - Part 5

It's terrible writing, nothing more and nothing less.

The writing wasn't exactly Oscar worthy, but I wouldn't call it terrible.

Orci and Kurtzman are terrible writers. I only think their saving grace was Star Trek which I think Abrams had a huge hand in making sure it didn't suck.

In a recent interview with the Empire magazine, Marc Webb explained that the train was used by president Roosvelt at first. I don't remember more details, but you can look it up.

I don't like Star Trek but I liked this. Maybe the because of the way the lines were delivered rather than the actual lines themselves. That said I would have no problem if they didn't return.

I can go on. Richard Parker lives in a universe where Spider-Man sticks to walls and is strong enough to lift cars, if you can accept that you pretty much have to go along with everything else.

Right. Let's introduce the Amazing Spider-Ham in the next movie, or how about the Legion of Losers? After all, it's fantasy right? Apparently anything goes! Wackiness!!!

There's something to be said for establishing internal logic in a story (especially sci-fi/fantasy) and sticking to it. Can't believe I have to explain this-We accept that Spider-Man has powers within the context of the world established. There is nothing to indicate that their world is otherwise any different from ours, meaning normal human beings in the everyday world function the same as our own. It's extremely silly to expect the audience not to question how/why Richard Parker was able to rig a hidden hydraulic powered train cars that apparently, could only be activated by subway tokens- and that no one had ever found in the 15 years since he'd been gone.

You're nitpicking at this point. We can find a number of things that don't make too much sense in just about any film.

Again, internal logic.

I didn't mind the lines as much as i did the fact that some characters weren't developed as much as i would have liked. They really had to explain the parents's storyline, something that dates back to the writers of the previous movie. I think that if the parents weren't there, they would have spent more time in developing the characters. And they are returning.

Talk about taking things to the extreme. This is a superhero movie and as such I give it more leeway than other genre movies. I gave the same leeway to movies like Avengers, Iron Man and TDK. If people want to start nip picking maybe I should start nit picking all the superhero movies I watch as well.

They give a line about this in the movie.

That's fine, but in this case, it's all about context. In TASM, the world they estblished gave no indication of extraordinary, bizarre happenstances (like Richard being able to build a train that lifts out of the ground with hydraulics in an abandoned train line). It strains credulity/believability in the part of the film we're expected to relate to/accept as our own world- which is the Peter Parker side of things, not the Spider-Man side.

Although this film could have been a lot better, I'm glad they got the parents thing out of the way. He knows the truth about his dad and Oscorp, it's time to move on. I do think they should have a scene in the next one where he catches Uncle Ben's killer. I didn't like how they swept that under the rug.

They should have concluded the parents story in the first film. Would have made TASM1 feel more satisfying and TASM2 less crowded.

That would have been better but would have been even better than that is to have not included the parents subplot at all.

I love the parents storyline though.

I didn't. The parents storyline bored me to tears, with no good pay off at the end. It was dull filler that could have been excised and better spent on developing characters that badly needed it, like the villains.

I don't hate it but the movies would have been stronger without it. It does make sense I guess considering they are going the Oscorp creates all or most of the supervillains route.

To each their own then. It fits in well with the whole Oscorp angle as Figs pointed out.

They should have at the very least cut out the opening plane sequence. That whole scene was there just to show Richard uploading that recording, what a waste of screentime. Without that scene, the part where Parker finds his little underground lab and watches the video would have played out fine.

What should have been cut is the origin. That would have given time to tell the complete story of the parents in a stand alone movie.

That would then push the parents scenes from ASM2 into ASM1 and given more screen time to developing Harry and Electro.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the origin but it could have been done in flashback or in the opening credits.

Agreed. Thematically/dramatically, there was no real payoff, catharsis or sense of real resolution- and certainly no emotional resonance. How these scripts get the green light, I will never know.

There was resolution for Peter as he got confirm from the horse's mouth he wasn't dumped on his aunt and uncle because his parents didn't love him.
From a personal point of view I was expecting something bigger to warrent the screen time devoted to this plot thread.

Yeah, that's why I noted "real resolution", because we, the audience already knew this info waaaaaay in advance. By the time Peter figures it out, there is no strong emotional catharsis/resonance for the audience.

But yes, I was expecting something more as well.

I thought the video would spell out 'Special Projects' and so Peter would have been put onto SP by his dad like Harry was put onto SP by his dad. That would have been a nice mirror.

I really feel they could have done a lot more with a sort of "sins of the father" theme for both Peter and Harry, if they'd left Electro out. Could have been really powerful.
