So heres my review guys
Im kind of late to be writing a review, but I finally got to see the movie in theaters yesterday for the first time. With that being said, I had heard a lot of negativity about this movie and really didnt want any of it to cloud my own individual thoughts. The most interesting thing about all the negativity was that it all seems to spew from the internet. A lot of people in person I have talked to have really loved this movie. I tend to imagine its easier for hate to be remembered then for the positive since it affects us more. Also, its easier to completely trash something you already wanted to hate. Vice versa, Im hypocritical to a point because originally from the first trailer I had been looking forward to this but I ended up being very mixed going to theater with all of the negativity I had heard in the past two weeks. Its also best to remember that this is an adaptation and not an exact replica of the comic books which really seems to bother some people. So with that little rant over with, heres my review.
Lets start out with the parents, just as the movie does. In The Amazing Spider-man 1, the parents were one of the main marketing ploys and ended up almost completely disappearing from the movie altogether besides a name drop or two from Dr. Connors. I had been fairly disappointed from the first movie because of that although I did like it. I felt like I had been almost lied to. So I thought it was smart on the writers part to make up for the executive producers mistakes of cutting scenes from the first movie and managing to write the subplots into this one. It provided a scene that made this movie feel kind of Bondish in my opinion which I thought was rather interesting considering in the 616 universe his parents were spies. I also really enjoyed the perspective of his parents being scientists to show where Peter gets his intelligence from and what he had missed out on since his parents were no longer around. Peter never got to geek out with his parents, not one time. All his life he had been shut out from the rest of the world because of his scientific mind (besides Gwen) and the only people he could of felt normal around were dead. Aunt May had a great discussion with Peter about that. Even though her and Ben never were scientists or scientifically gifted, they did give Peter his morals and provided when no one else could, and I think that gave Peter some resolution on his Parents. As much as I did like the parents perspective, it felt really forced due to the last movie almost completely cutting it out. The opening sequence was really intense with his parents and very emotionally filmed such as the scene where Richard looks over at Mary Parker as the plane was falling from the sky, but it just felt forced in a way.
Now lets talk about the character who this movie exists around; Spider-man/Peter Parker. This iteration of Spider-man is in my opinion, the one weve all been waiting for. Andrew Garfield nails the role here. He manages to have a swashbuckling attitude, sarcasm, and a playful/humorous attitude weve come to expect from him in both the comics and even cartoons. In the first 30 minutes alone, we see some of the best Spider-man interactions we have ever seen on the big screen. I found it hilarious the way he toyed with Alexsei during the car chase. The way he sat on top of the car and knocked on his window were great and really represented how playful Spidey is and how he can annoy his villains which is something he does quite often in the comics. He constantly throws puns and quips out in this movie at all the villains which I think is fantastic. Even though all of this is great, they managed to also capture the most important perspective of Spider-man as well; the hero side. Im not talking about just saving lives or fighting criminals, but the way he also can save people from themselves or the way he inspires hope in people. The scene where he saves Max Dillon and tells him hes a somebody is a great example, as well as the scene where he saves the kid from being bullied and fixes his science project and then walks him home. These sides show the compassionate side of Spidey and are really heartwarming in my opinion. We all go through hard times, and characters like Spider-man remind us theres always a reason to go on and be a hero to our self if we have to.
Now for the man behind the mask. Peter is a lot more confident in this movie. I really enjoyed his scenes with Harry. It finally showed him opening up to someone besides Gwen which was nice for a change. This move also showed Peter being more responsible. I really do enjoy Andrew Garfields interpretation of Peter Parker, but I just didnt feel like we got enough of him in this movie. We know hes in college, but we never really see him in school or even working on an assignment or anything. We also know hes been working for the bugle, but we never actually see him take a picture or go to the bugle. It was kind of frustrating to say the least. At least we had some really good scenes between him and Aunt May that really showcased their relationship and Mays position as his mother type figure. The scenes with Gwen were always great as well. Their chemistry is undeniable. We really see how torn of a character Peter is with Gwen with measuring responsibility and his relationship with her which is what well talk about next.
The relationship in The Amazing Spider-man 2 is easily one of the best things about the movie. Peter is constantly haunted by Gwens dad because of the promise he made to stay away from her. But also is conflicted because of how much he loves Gwen and according to her because of how selfish and unfair it is for him to make them stay apart when she wants to be with him. Its obvious they both love each other and want to be together, but Spider-man gets in the way of their relationship. To make matters worse, Gwen is also leaving to Oxford. The two break up initially but cannot stay away from each other no matter how hard they try and Peter wants. Even when they tried to be friends, it was obvious they could not. For most of the movie I was rooting for Gwen and Peter to make it through together. They deserved each other, and Peter really had no one else. The only complaint I have is the line Peter said about watching her. That was a little weird to say the least even if he was supposedly making sure she was safe. When the couple finally does decide to stay together and you seem content with the idea, Goblin shows up. Coming into the movie I had wanted Gwens death due to it happening in the comics and etc. but once the movie started I did not want it to happen. I wanted the two to stay together and be happy, so it was really heartbreaking when she died. Marc Webb made the scene perfect. I cannot even put in words how heartbreaking it was. The slow motion was perfect and small details down to the web which looked like a shape of a hand made it even more sorrowful. It was a powerful scene. We really could sense how hurt Peter was.
Since we just brought up Goblin, lets discuss the villains. Ill begin with Electro. Max Dillon was really sympathetic to me. We saw a character that had been shunned by the world and ignored. He had become nothing but a ghost to the people around him. Even in the science world, his ideas had been stolen and used by Oscorp. Spider-man seemed to be the only person who ever even acknowledged him as a person of equal standards. I think Max had been drove insane by his loneliness and Spider-man was the only person he could like because hes the only one to acknowledge him. I also believe he was maybe borderline schizophrenic by the way the imagined Spider-man being his best friend and the way he supposedly had people coming to his birthday party. To me, he was a powerful character although somewhat cheesy, even if that was the point. Ive seen many people complain about his motives, but to me they seem justifiable. Lets start with what I think the main one is, the power plant. Oscorp had stolen his blueprints and ideas for a power plant that would run all of New York and took credit. He was also covered up by Oscorp when they thought he was dead, meaning once again he was forgotten. He wanted revenge on Oscorp so he wanted to dismantle what they had stolen from him. Now his other motive was to kill Spider-man, which was caused by the police shooting at him, which he thought was because Spider-man set him up to be killed. These arent too hard to grasp, and I that bothers some people because they say its weak character development or weak plot point. I feel like it just shows that there are weak people in the world that can snap from anything because we dont know what they have gone through. I thoroughly enjoyed this character and felt bad for him, and especially the things that happened to him at Ravencroft.
The other main villain was Harry Osborn who later became the Green Goblin. I also really liked Harry in this film. When hes first introduced, you can feel his anger at his father for abandoning him and basically throwing him out of his life. He has an edge to him that he rightfully should. After he learns about his disease, and his fathers research, I do think he does come to forgive is father though and ultimately also blames his fathers death on Peter for not trying to save him as well. I really liked him and Peters relationship and I wished it would have been explored more upon. To me, Harry was one of the saddest characters in the movie. He was framed by Oscorp, the company he inherited and was slowly dying of a disease for which he thought his best friend could cure. I really did enjoy watching Harry get his revenge on Oscorp with Electro, at that point he felt more or less like an antihero. Harry was really desperate in this movie, and I enjoyed it. The only thing I dont really like are his motives after he becomes Goblin. They are rather weak, which is a shame because it ultimately led to Gwens death.
The last villain was Rhino, which was nothing really more than a bookmark and to show Spidey back in action. There really isnt much to discuss here, besides the design and the little dialogue we had. I did like the kid standing up to Rhino and the Spidey showing up. It showed how other people no matter how small can make a difference. The scene is also great at showing how Spider-man seems to bully the bullies. The Rhino is really hammy, and I thought that was great because he seemed very animated like from The Spectacular Spider-man. I did like the design of his costume, it reminded me very much of the Ultimate comics. I just wished the marketing team wouldnt have advertised him in the movie because all he really does is show up at the end to prepare us for the third.
This movie was one of the best super hero movies in my opinion, and is very misunderstood by a lot of people. It does have flaws, but not that major. Of course things arent going to be always realistic, its a super hero movie after all, and thats what I love about it. It provides us with a world different from us that can inspire us in our real world though the stories that are told and the morals that are portrayed such as Hope like in this movie. I havent personally had a great week by no means, and this movie really made me feel better. I left the theater smiling because it gave me hope for a better tomorrow. If a movie can inspire you or make you feel emotion, then its accomplished something . I give The Amazing Spider-man 2 a 9/10. Oh and a little side note, I thoroughly enjoyed the soundtrack and so did a few of my friends which is quite unusual for them to comment on that.
