The Amazing Spider-Man 2 The Amazing Spider-Man 2 - User Review Thread! - SPOILERS! - Part 5

So heres my review guys
I’m kind of late to be writing a review, but I finally got to see the movie in theaters yesterday for the first time. With that being said, I had heard a lot of negativity about this movie and really didn’t want any of it to cloud my own individual thoughts. The most interesting thing about all the negativity was that it all seems to spew from the internet. A lot of people in person I have talked to have really loved this movie. I tend to imagine it’s easier for hate to be remembered then for the positive since it affects us more. Also, it’s easier to completely trash something you already wanted to hate. Vice versa, I’m hypocritical to a point because originally from the first trailer I had been looking forward to this but I ended up being very mixed going to theater with all of the negativity I had heard in the past two weeks. It’s also best to remember that this is an adaptation and not an exact replica of the comic books which really seems to bother some people. So with that little rant over with, here’s my review.
Let’s start out with the parents, just as the movie does. In The Amazing Spider-man 1, the parents were one of the main marketing ploys and ended up almost completely disappearing from the movie altogether besides a name drop or two from Dr. Connors. I had been fairly disappointed from the first movie because of that although I did like it. I felt like I had been almost lied to. So I thought it was smart on the writer’s part to make up for the executive producer’s mistakes of cutting scenes from the first movie and managing to write the subplots into this one. It provided a scene that made this movie feel kind of Bondish in my opinion which I thought was rather interesting considering in the 616 universe his parents were spies. I also really enjoyed the perspective of his parents being scientists to show where Peter gets his intelligence from and what he had missed out on since his parents were no longer around. Peter never got to geek out with his parents, not one time. All his life he had been shut out from the rest of the world because of his scientific mind (besides Gwen) and the only people he could of felt normal around were dead. Aunt May had a great discussion with Peter about that. Even though her and Ben never were scientists or scientifically gifted, they did give Peter his morals and provided when no one else could, and I think that gave Peter some resolution on his Parents. As much as I did like the parents perspective, it felt really forced due to the last movie almost completely cutting it out. The opening sequence was really intense with his parents and very emotionally filmed such as the scene where Richard looks over at Mary Parker as the plane was falling from the sky, but it just felt forced in a way.
Now let’s talk about the character who this movie exists around; Spider-man/Peter Parker. This iteration of Spider-man is in my opinion, the one we’ve all been waiting for. Andrew Garfield nails the role here. He manages to have a swashbuckling attitude, sarcasm, and a playful/humorous attitude we’ve come to expect from him in both the comics and even cartoons. In the first 30 minutes alone, we see some of the best Spider-man interactions we have ever seen on the big screen. I found it hilarious the way he toyed with Alexsei during the car chase. The way he sat on top of the car and knocked on his window were great and really represented how playful Spidey is and how he can annoy his villains which is something he does quite often in the comics. He constantly throws puns and quips out in this movie at all the villains which I think is fantastic. Even though all of this is great, they managed to also capture the most important perspective of Spider-man as well; the hero side. I’m not talking about just saving lives or fighting criminals, but the way he also can save people from themselves or the way he inspires hope in people. The scene where he saves Max Dillon and tells him he’s a somebody is a great example, as well as the scene where he saves the kid from being bullied and fixes his science project and then walks him home. These sides show the compassionate side of Spidey and are really heartwarming in my opinion. We all go through hard times, and characters like Spider-man remind us there’s always a reason to go on and be a hero to our self if we have to.
Now for the man behind the mask. Peter is a lot more confident in this movie. I really enjoyed his scenes with Harry. It finally showed him opening up to someone besides Gwen which was nice for a change. This move also showed Peter being more responsible. I really do enjoy Andrew Garfield’s interpretation of Peter Parker, but I just didn’t feel like we got enough of him in this movie. We know hes in college, but we never really see him in school or even working on an assignment or anything. We also know hes been working for the bugle, but we never actually see him take a picture or go to the bugle. It was kind of frustrating to say the least. At least we had some really good scenes between him and Aunt May that really showcased their relationship and May’s position as his mother type figure. The scenes with Gwen were always great as well. Their chemistry is undeniable. We really see how torn of a character Peter is with Gwen with measuring responsibility and his relationship with her which is what we’ll talk about next.
The relationship in The Amazing Spider-man 2 is easily one of the best things about the movie. Peter is constantly haunted by Gwen’s dad because of the promise he made to stay away from her. But also is conflicted because of how much he loves Gwen and according to her because of how selfish and unfair it is for him to make them stay apart when she wants to be with him. It’s obvious they both love each other and want to be together, but Spider-man gets in the way of their relationship. To make matters worse, Gwen is also leaving to Oxford. The two break up initially but cannot stay away from each other no matter how hard they try and Peter wants. Even when they tried to be friends, it was obvious they could not. For most of the movie I was rooting for Gwen and Peter to make it through together. They deserved each other, and Peter really had no one else. The only complaint I have is the line Peter said about watching her. That was a little weird to say the least even if he was supposedly making sure she was safe. When the couple finally does decide to stay together and you seem content with the idea, Goblin shows up. Coming into the movie I had wanted Gwen’s death due to it happening in the comics and etc. but once the movie started I did not want it to happen. I wanted the two to stay together and be happy, so it was really heartbreaking when she died. Marc Webb made the scene perfect. I cannot even put in words how heartbreaking it was. The slow motion was perfect and small details down to the web which looked like a shape of a hand made it even more sorrowful. It was a powerful scene. We really could sense how hurt Peter was.
Since we just brought up Goblin, lets discuss the villains. I’ll begin with Electro. Max Dillon was really sympathetic to me. We saw a character that had been shunned by the world and ignored. He had become nothing but a ghost to the people around him. Even in the science world, his ideas had been stolen and used by Oscorp. Spider-man seemed to be the only person who ever even acknowledged him as a person of equal standards. I think Max had been drove insane by his loneliness and Spider-man was the only person he could like because he’s the only one to acknowledge him. I also believe he was maybe borderline schizophrenic by the way the imagined Spider-man being his best friend and the way he supposedly had people coming to his birthday party. To me, he was a powerful character although somewhat cheesy, even if that was the point. I’ve seen many people complain about his motives, but to me they seem justifiable. Let’s start with what I think the main one is, the power plant. Oscorp had stolen his blueprints and ideas for a power plant that would run all of New York and took credit. He was also covered up by Oscorp when they thought he was dead, meaning once again he was forgotten. He wanted revenge on Oscorp so he wanted to dismantle what they had stolen from him. Now his other motive was to kill Spider-man, which was caused by the police shooting at him, which he thought was because Spider-man set him up to be killed. These aren’t too hard to grasp, and I that bothers some people because they say its weak character development or weak plot point. I feel like it just shows that there are weak people in the world that can snap from anything because we don’t know what they have gone through. I thoroughly enjoyed this character and felt bad for him, and especially the things that happened to him at Ravencroft.
The other main villain was Harry Osborn who later became the Green Goblin. I also really liked Harry in this film. When he’s first introduced, you can feel his anger at his father for abandoning him and basically throwing him out of his life. He has an edge to him that he rightfully should. After he learns about his disease, and his father’s research, I do think he does come to forgive is father though and ultimately also blames his father’s death on Peter for not trying to save him as well. I really liked him and Peter’s relationship and I wished it would have been explored more upon. To me, Harry was one of the saddest characters in the movie. He was framed by Oscorp, the company he inherited and was slowly dying of a disease for which he thought his best friend could cure. I really did enjoy watching Harry get his revenge on Oscorp with Electro, at that point he felt more or less like an antihero. Harry was really desperate in this movie, and I enjoyed it. The only thing I don’t really like are his motives after he becomes Goblin. They are rather weak, which is a shame because it ultimately led to Gwen’s death.
The last villain was Rhino, which was nothing really more than a bookmark and to show Spidey back in action. There really isn’t much to discuss here, besides the design and the little dialogue we had. I did like the kid standing up to Rhino and the Spidey showing up. It showed how other people no matter how small can make a difference. The scene is also great at showing how Spider-man seems to bully the bullies. The Rhino is really hammy, and I thought that was great because he seemed very animated like from The Spectacular Spider-man. I did like the design of his costume, it reminded me very much of the Ultimate comics. I just wished the marketing team wouldn’t have advertised him in the movie because all he really does is show up at the end to prepare us for the third.
This movie was one of the best super hero movies in my opinion, and is very misunderstood by a lot of people. It does have flaws, but not that major. Of course things aren’t going to be always realistic, it’s a super hero movie after all, and that’s what I love about it. It provides us with a world different from us that can inspire us in our real world though the stories that are told and the morals that are portrayed such as Hope like in this movie. I haven’t personally had a great week by no means, and this movie really made me feel better. I left the theater smiling because it gave me hope for a better tomorrow. If a movie can inspire you or make you feel emotion, then it’s accomplished something . I give The Amazing Spider-man 2 a 9/10. Oh and a little side note, I thoroughly enjoyed the soundtrack and so did a few of my friends which is quite unusual for them to comment on that.

Awesome that you liked it, do agree that the film did heaps of things right :)

Haven't posted here in 3 years....wow. Anyway. I give this film a 4/10 rating. As a movie, not even giving it the comic book advantage, I found it poorly constructed, overacted, shallow and just flat out bad. Somehow I like this less than the previous ASM and I thought that was terrible too.

Halo10's review of Amazing Spiderman 2

· I thought Amazing Spiderman 2 sequel movie - was very good. it was a lot better than the first Amazing Spiderman film (which I thought was somewhat dull, dragging and non-appealing.) I have to admit that I underestimated the sequel. Yes, ..It has some bugs in it ( no pun intended) but it also has its very enjoyable strong points as well. I really liked it – as mentioned a big comeback from the first one. although it’s still not on the level of another recent sequel (Captain America Winter Soldier).

Speaking of Captain America 2. , I thought it was odd to have Amazing Spiderman #2 film release so very close to the Capt.’s April release. I still thought many Superhero fans were still digesting Winter Soldier, but with even that said, two weeks later another popular superhero will make its release in Xmen: Days of Future Past.

· As far as AM2, the film starts off quick with events surrounding Obscorp and the parents of Peter Parker (though I was annoyed and worried about the blurry camera effects through the first five minutes of the film) but oddly that bad camera effect was only presented in that very opening of the film, it was a whole bit better for the rest of the film, and that included – the number of battle scenes in the film and web-slinging travel. I am still baffled ( and very pleased) of how much faster, appealing and action-loaded this film was when compared to the 1st Amazing Spidey film.

·I really liked the fast pace action, CGI special effects, and fighting choreography that displayed a lot more of his acrobatic agility, strength/power (hurls/catches cars in mid-air) how he makes use of his fancy lifesaving, web-slinging antics..,.. and the vintage Spidey-humorous jokes while in combat (much like Spidey does in the Marvel comics) I thought this (humor element) was more consistent with Amazing Spiderman than Sam Rami’s version – but both movie studios are still quite limiting/ignoring the spider- senses still far too much for me.

What I cannot overlook and under-appreciate – is the way the camera allow the viewing audience to enjoy the twisting, spinning, agile way of travel that Spidey slings through the city , ..without the use of the horribly annoying shaky camera – Also what stood out was the well done slow-motion, "Matrix-like" camera-work that added more appeal and excitement to the battle scenes. I saw it in regular 2-D , but I figure this may be quite a treat in 3-D package.

· I didn’t get the ideal that they needed the dorky“ rhino” act at the very end, but I immediately felt that they had some urge to include a 3rd villain in the mix. It’s very, very minimum so don’t take it serious . I had no problem with Electro as the main villain. I actually thought it was a good idea because of his powers and the danger it presented to Spidey. But it also depends upon the look of Electro, the CGI effects when spidey had to flip, twist, roll and fight against high voltage currents.

·As far as the casting- I thought Academy Award Winner Jamie Fox was surprisingly “ awful “ in acting the role a nerdy engineer. He struggled and seemed mechanical, and amateurish
and I didn’t care for the look/voice of the villainous Electro, who struck me more as someone who caught a uncontrollable pale plague than someone rigoring with incredible electromagnetic power.

I still think Tobey McGuire is a better Peter Parker than Andrew Garfield (McGuire has more of a bookworm nerdy look than Garfield’s sway teen look) and Sally Field is still so miscast as Aunt May. Rosemary Harris (Aunt May in Sam Rami’s Spiderman- series) is still an ideal Aunt May type ahead of Field. I just have a hard time seeing her in that role. I think I just like and prefer the grey haired Beverly Hillbilly-granny look of a Rosemary Harris for the Aunt May role. And it’s ironic to have 2 Oscar winners in this film, but yet BOTH still were so miscast in their respective roles this film. And I still like the McGuire/Dunst (Mary Jane) duo as a romantic couple vs. Garfield/Stone(“Gwen Stacy” in Amazing Spiderman series)

· I still have a hard time getting into the Parker parents conspiracy- the surrounding mystery of the disappearances of Peters’ Parker’s biological parents- from the 1st film, there is still the persistent of involving the work of Peter’s father Richard Parker- that includes Osbcorp ( the powerful corporation owned by the Osborn family) …and much of it binds into the birth of the Green Goblin – but yet I still didn’t find it very interesting to eagerly await the outcome and result of Peter finally finding out what happened to his parents.

I did think it was a nice piece to add Parker’s haunting guilt and anxiety of the tragic loss of Gwen Stacy’s beloved father; Police Chief/Capt. Stacey I also liked that some new twists and change ups in the film that differs from the original Spidey comics- usually it’s Harry’s father Norman Osborn who becomes the villainous Green Goblin, yet the film skips over Norman Osborn and officially anoints Harry Osborn as the Green Goblin.

· Speaking of the Osborns – actor Dane DeHaan steals the show as Harry Osborn. He actually intrigued me more than Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker .And there is absolutely no comparison at all when matched up against James Franco’s role as Harry Osborn. DeHann has the eyes, look, features – (and I loved the hair dud !) and far more interesting and believable an acting Osborn character than Franco… this ended up being the biggest and best casting of the entire film, IMO.. DeHann delivers as arrogant, overpowering demanding, selfish, while also delivering a performance in his struggling moments of despair. In the climactic ending, I was expecting a revenge-filled Spidey to go after the villain, and maybe more interesting a cliff hanger heading into the 3rd Spidey film, but director Marc Webb didn’t move in that direction.

Instead he opted for a questionable “ hint” at the Sinister Six in the next Spidey film , which Spidey followers will well know the familiarity of that crew. I thought a “ Venom” character entry would have stirred up the fan base a lot more so. I thought the final scene with the mechanical " Rhino" was somewhat quirky and corny but overall with the film I came away pretty entertained and satisfied.

·While it does have some flaws but it was still quite fast paced, colorful, and entertaining- from beginning to end. (A far cry from the 1st film.) On a scale of 1 to 10,.. I’d give Amazing Spiderman 2 an 7.5.

When he said the CGI wasn't good he lost are credablity lol. The CGI was great and the power plant is a very close second best fight in a spider man movie behind the train fight and the other 2 fights looked amazing 2. If you think the CGI is bad then I don't know how you could think the CGI is good in any movie.

I don't think you understand what the term credibility means if you're using it in that manner.

Seems a common lapse in logic in this community.

"Person X says something I don't like, therefore they have no credibility."

The quality of effects is subjective of course but I thought the effects looked so good (and I follow effects closely) that saying the effects look poor makes you look like you have an agenda.

For me there are only two poor effects, Rhino and Spidey catching the Plutonium in the armoured van, other then that the effects are absolutely top notch.

I know what credibility means and its not that he doesn't like it but that he says it looks bad. That would be like me saying a great grapchis video game has bad grapchis.

Yep lol. Now if he said "the sky was blue, and I wanted a scene at dusk, therefore this movie is awful" then yeah, all credibility lost. Now, if he's commenting on one of the flaws of the film being it's....*ahem* state of the art PS2 graphics, then yea, solid criticism lol.

lol I don't know what ps2 games you have been playing. The whole CGI thing is so funny because CGI now days has gotten to the point where you cant tell that something is CGI like 90% of the time you just now it is because you know that some things cant happen. Like in this movie you now Elector is CGI because no person can really beable to control electrisite. You know no one can have the refelxe of someone like spider man. Most CGI in movies looks great people act like this is the early 1990 when CGI did look bad and the CGI in this movie was better then a lot of the CGI in other movies that looks great or good already. If the CGI in this movie is bad then the CGI in like ever other CBM is tearable.

Are you seriously implying that TASM2's CGI looks like a PS2 game?

That guy can barely form any sort of independent opinion without spewing the same idea's that other, better youtubers do. I can't stand that kid.

his walking dead videos are uncomfortable to watch either.

infact, in his review he acts like he cares but he states that spiderman is his least favorite character.

So, to answer your question, no. I am not implying that it looks like a PS2 game. Nor am I in the minority about the fact that TASM2 had some awful cgi. Merely stating a fact.:cwink:

Do me a favor and dust off that ol' PS2, fire it up, and show me anything that compares to those images.

Also, are all of those screen shots from the finished movie? Or are you digging up screens from the old debut trailers?

The obly one that is questionable in quality is the last picture. But if you take anything that is entirely CGI and go frame by frame of course you will find inconsistencies. The other two are fine. There is actually only one scene where I thought the CGI was not good, and it isn't even one I've seen you guys mention yet.

Not that it really matters, if you don't like the movie it's just another check mark on the list of things to rag on right?

Yes, the second two are exactly as they appear in the film. The first has more muted colors in the final product, I believe, but still was pretty trite looking. Oh, and none of the cgi was *good*, hence why I said it looked like a PS2 game hahaha. Even one of the scenes that was actually shot in real life looked game-y. The one of Spidey on the building looking down at Gwen.

I know right asm2 has some of the best CGI in any movie ever!

No way. There was some nice special fx in it, but predominantly the CGI was so obvious and some of it even video game looking. The whole final fight with Electro being a prime example of that. So was the final shot of the movie when he's swinging at 'Rhino'.

I thought the final fight looked incredible especially in 3D.
I certainly preferred the effects in ASM2 than the other 2 superhero movies I've seen this year.

Yeah lets all post images from trailers, that will prove a point about a movie
