Total Recall is Sony? Well, they can kiss goodbye any profit they made from TASM then.

I had the same reaction until I saw the trailer. Not sure I'll see the movie, but I must admit it looked way better than I expected, but not a Colin Ferrel fan.

Just looked it up, this year in addition to Total Recall and Sky Fall, they also have Resident Evil Retribution, Hotel Transylvania (animated), a Kevin James comedy and Kathryn Bigelow thriller (about Osama Bin Laden I think). When you factor in ASM, MIB3, 21 Jump St, The Vow, Thinking Like a Man, Ghost Rider and Underworld Awakening, not sure what other studio has had as big a lineup for 2012. Though it's looking pretty barren for Sony in 2013.

The general audience score for ASM is 87% on Rotten tomato so you'd hope word of mouth for ASM would be good.

It is good.

Most people didn't expect it to reach Raimi type numbers and now that it hasn't the sky is falling. Internet predictability.

Of course it hasnt, then they would have to pay a lot of taxes.

So you are absolutely right, its not simple. Creative accounting makes these films looks like they have lost money. Realistically though everyone is getting their payday through one channel or another.

Considering the way Spider-man 3 was received, this was a reboot to a movie series 5 years old, I think this is a phenomenal showing at the box office. Batman begins was pretty much a failure at the box office and that was a very good film. Sony is probably happy with what it has made.

I was always predicting this was going to do roughly 250 Domestic, and 400 foreign, but now that I saw it and it turned out to be a lot better than I predicted it would be, I'm kind of sad it isn't set to do more.

I predicted IM-type numbers as well, which is pretty damn good. It's a successful reboot without question.

So now your argument has changed from Earnings to reviews?? WOW
The 1989 movie made 420M of a 35M budget,WB increased the budget by 5 times and still earned 50M less despite being released 16 years later with increased ticket prices and all, thats much more of a reason of panic by your logic
Your comparison is very stupid,BB was up against 4 pathetic movies, hardly a competition, still it could not outgross all of them.TASM was up against the best comic book trilogy to date

Not for me,I love S3,I have good memories associiated with that movie

According to sony's statements, the earnings have more than exceeded their expectations. There you go

TASM improved over SM3 reviews wise

Nope, kids are going gaga over the avengers and batman a lot more

BB earned lower than 1989 movie despite earning better reviews, same is happening with TASM and SM3

All I worry about is Spiderman,
Sony, with whatever their financial situation may be,have no problem throwing 200M+ at reboots with a much lower fan base(Total Recall)

Thus I am sure they will give a decent budget to TASM2 and thats all I care about

Point but Batman and Avenger's(The team) popularity is more than him,it was different 5 years ago, which was the reason SM3 earned truckloads despite earning poor reviews

''Sony pictures is proud of the film's opening results stating, "In the world of relaunched franchises, this is a spectacular success by any measure". For example, both Batman Begins ($79.5 million) and X-Men: First Class ($66.5 million) had a six-day opening that were significantly lower than that of The Amazing Spider-Man.[23''

Please dont equate your expectations to Sony's expectations
lets see batman begins budget 150mill first class budget 145mill amazing spiderman budget 230mill so how is that a big deal it beat the prior 2 films six day?sony really know how to spin doctor things

It has nothing to do with creative accounting since those are precisely the numbers you don't get from studios. I think it just puts things in perspective regarding this business in general: a lot of films, especially those with high budget don't break even through their theatrical run. And following this pattern, TASM won't be profitable until its home video/VOD release.

Just like Spider-Man 3, the movie suffers from a break-even point that is far too high (especially for a reboot) thanks to their inflated production budgets. If the movie was produced for under 200 millions we wouldn't be arguing over its profitability.

I for one just hope that things will turn out better for TASM's follow up than they did for its predecessor's.

Actually, I'm fairly sure that I read somewhere that the money spent on SM4 is considered to be part of the 230M budget..

but it may of been on these forums, so I dunno.
i read that to that they had already put in 50mill on sm4 so that would mean amazing spiderman really cost 180mill not bad if true like with superman returns.

I wonder what that 50m was for?

BB Total Box Office 370M,First class Box Office 350M

TASM Box office 400+M as of now, with still a week to go,so the comparison is valid

How are we sure of the Budget?

For a large period of its production people had absolutely no idea of the budget when one of the part actor let it slip that 'Its a 220M dollar movie',now suddenly its been increased to 230m

Odd

People are still trying to undermine this films success? LOL!

Sony’s successful The Amazing Spider-Man 3D reboot should come in at around $9.8M today and maybe as high as $10M, which would be a good -51% compared to last Friday. The Weekend should improve each day on the drop and end up with $32M and a cume of around $197M domestic. On Tuesday, a week after opening, Spidey hit $400M worldwide and Sony is confident it will end up at $800M. (Interesting how Spidey or Scrat were either #1 or #2 in international theaters country by country last weekend.) There’s no doubt this franchise restart with another origins story for Marvel’s most popular character is a success, even if it didn’t break box office records or reinvent the genre or even please fanboys. So Sony Pictures Entertainment chairman Amy Pascal and vice chairman Jeff Blake deserve kudos for taking a risk.

As long as there is a sequel and the sequel has a decent budget that's all I care about. I do however think now we are over the hump of the origin story and the principle characters are established the sequel has the potential to be TDK to BB or SM2 to SM1

To me it seems like they are taking their disappointment for the movie and channeling it to hoping it fails, and they're grabbing for proof that it's failing.

Kinda wish it would cross $200 million this weekend, but it's gonna be close enough!

Me too, but I still believe it can.
If the true budget for this movie was indeed 180 million (with 50m spent on SM4), then maybe we can have a budget between 180m and 200m for the next movie, I guess.

BB Total Box Office 370M,First class Box Office 350M

yeah but those 2 movies spent 80mill less on the budgets that is being ignored.on a good note looks like less than a 50%drop this weekend not bad for spidey.

this still can do between 18 and 20 mill next weekend even with batman.so i think it can finish around 275mill domestic and atleast 450mill overseas that gives you 725 worldwide.

ASM won't make as much as IM Domestically but it will still make more than IM, but IM has a better profit than ASM.

Yeah IM numbers with the most anticipated movie of the year 17 days later. Again successful reboot.

Now if TASM 2 makes Im-type numbers then I would be disappointed. But I'm confident that will not be the case.

Just saw it in IMAX and thought it was pretty good. It should have made a fair amount of its money by the time TDKR comes out but that's going to devastate its legs.
