The Audience Reaction Thread

I saw it at the Arclight in Sherman Oaks (part of Los Angeles). It's a pretty nice theater, with seats assigned to you and everything. It was pretty much adults only at that theater. The audience was pretty ready for the film though. Lots of cheers for the Star Trek and Terminator previews. I was curious to their reactions during the movie, as it was pretty quiet at parts that I was expecting laughs from, but they cheered for Rorshach's prison line, and there was a fair amount of applause at the end, although it was brief. I was expecting a lot of my friends to hate it, but it turned out they all really liked it (more of them had read it than I realized), even my girl liked it, and she gets confused by complex films a lot. So we got one positive audience : )

i dont mean to be anal but the correct term is little person.
What's so incorrect about midget? It's a perfectly valid term.

Also, I'm surprised no-one has made any jokes about how Dr. Manhattan's balls are always blue. :p
Now I have something to look forward to in my next viewing. Now that blue schlong is out of the system, blue balls is next.

It was used back in freak shows in reference to Little People. Most LP's i've talked to are offended by the term "midget".

The word dwarf has generally replaced midget though the term little person is preferred.

Most notable audience reactions at my midnight screening:

- Some guys snickering at the sex scene between Jupiter and Dr. Manhattan (they started laughing when they saw three arms start caressing Jupiter)
- A few snickers and a couple of female gasps when Patrick Wilson showed his butt
- People (mostly guys) laughing at the sex scene between Dreiberg and Jupiter in Archie and even more people laughed when that "orgasmic flameball" bit scene happened

Oh. You should've just said political correctness. I thought you were referring to the actual word definition.

I never understood how the term "midget" is more offensive than "dwarf"

Other than the butt, the other two seemed comical on purpose.

Every time something brutal happened, there were Ooooos and Ahhhhs. Especially the rape scene. And there was a kid in front of me who missed half the movie with his mom's hand in front of his face.:woot:

The theater I was at was mostly quiet throughout the movie. What was disturbing was that their were some that laughed at first when the Comedian punched Sally in the stomach. Once that scene got more violent the laughter stopped, but I don't know why they laughed originally. There were also a few laughs during the sex scene and the first sight of Dr. Manhattan in all his glory, but for the most part it was quiet.

You know how people here brought up how they saw some parents bringing in their kids? Well, I saw family leaving right after Rorchasch's 'backstory'. hehe.

There were people who left; mostly couples and I can tell right away it was the girlfriends/wives who wanted to leave while the guys wanted to stay.

Rorschach's line got the biggest reaction of the entire movie. They reminded me how badass that line was when I first read it. Thanks, midnight audience!

Everyone laughed as soon as Nixon appeared on screen and laughed each time he appeared that make up was ridiculous.
Rorschach's line got applause and cheers
Dreibergs line about Rorschach dropping a villain down an elevator shaft got a lot of laughs
Dreibergs response to Laurie Jupiters description about her costume received a lot of laughs
A lot of gasps during the almost rape scene
A lot of gasps some laughs during the cleaver to the head scene
Alot of ohhhhs and ahhs during the alley fight scene
The 5 and 4 year olds sitting a few seats from me became more saucer eyed as the film went along and restless
About 5 people walked out before the last 45 minutes
At first it seemed no one noticed Manhattans penis but the more they ...eerr..displayed it the more people laughed especially the young girls at the front of the theatre.
Laughter at Manhattan splitting himself into 3 to work and make love to Laurie
Laughter at the first love scene
Moans and some laughs during the extensive sex scene
Applause for Rorschach during the prison break
No applause at the end people just left

I was with a good audience. They basically laughed at the intentionally funny moments , were cheering for rorshach , they were shocked by some of the violence , and some clapped at the end credits. Actually some people got up before the journal scene thinking the film was over but then stopped on the walkway and continued to see what was going on.

I'm actually kind of glad of people saying that people did walk out. Though nobody did in my theater. It just shows how they got completelty to opposite of what they expected. It's not your generic superhero film at all. They expected to see something along the lines of everything else, they didn't get it.

And the parents are stupid as hell for bringing their kids to it.

Why would anyone take a four or five year old to a movie that's already received an R rating, let alone if they had any idea what it was about?

I saw it at an 11am showing and there was a 80 year old couple in the row below me. They made zero reaction, except that the wife leaned over and said "That's Kissinger" to her husband (lover?) before somebody on screen said it. Which got me to thinking about the generational appeal of a story that encompasses so much of what we experienced (or could have experienced more accurately) in the 20th century.

everyone in my theater marked out for the "you're locked in here with me!" line from rorschach. Also tons of gasps and groans when awesome bones were popped out of flesh haha
Haha, that was the one line everyone in my theatre freaked out at also

I dunno, but maybe 50% of the time, I think it's the fact that it's the adults that really want to see the movie and they have nothing else to do with the kids. Since the kids are probably so young, the parents certainly can't trust them to be on their own to watch an appropriate movie by themselves, so, they all go in together and cover their eyes/ears whenever. :D

It's happened with my family many times.... :p

I saw it a second time. The audience was generally good and laughed at the funny scenes and cringed or "oohed" at the violent moments.

But of special note:

I was disturbed by the implications of our society when about a half dozen guys laughed during the rape scene with the Comedian and Sally Jupiter. They laughed when he first punched her in the gut and started kicking her, but it kept going and got more violent and intense and they finally I think shut up, because the scene got so graphic.

And I saw a group of 3 or 4 walk out and that is it. But I think people generally enjoyed it, though. The people I went with did. Albeit, leaving the theater I overheard a couple talking and the guy liked it, but his girlfriend called it slow and boring. So you never know.

I'll be honest. I laughed at that myself. Not because it was funny, but because it was the only real release I had at the horror of it.

I guess someone decided to bring their kids to the movie. So whenever there was a sex scene or nudity they were giggling.I guess their father told them to cover their eyes during certain scenes ,or he would send them to the bathroom.

"There's naked people in this part! Cover your eyes, or I'm sending your little butts to the bathroom, and you KNOW what it smells like in there!"
