Yes it is. One shared by the vast majority of superhero movie genre fans.

No it isn't. It's shared by the vast majority of Superman fans maybe. The spinning Earth nonsense makes the movie lose nearly all credibility. I was like 9 years old when that movie came out and thought that was scene was complete rubbish and killed the movie for me.

Most superhero movie fans nowadays have one of the following as the best CBM:

- tdk
- IRON MAN
- Spiderman 2
- X2

- TDK - Chris Nolan.

- Spider-Man 2 - Sam Raimi.

- X-Men 2 - Bryan Singer.

All three directors have said to be fans of Donner Superman movies and have even said that they were influenced by it.

So, Superman The Movie is considered by many fans and directors alike as an important movie.

I never said it wasn't an important movie; it gave birth to the CBM genre, of course it's important. What I was disagreeing with is the blanket statement that it considered the best CBM by the majority of fans.

That is debatable. :o

When I think of the Superman Movie, I think of the "How it Should Have Ended" version. One of the best HISHE to date :)

I would say Superman Returns had more action scenes in it than The Dark Knight. That plane catch still gives me goosebumps when I watch it.

Really? Not sure if serious...

The plane scene was great and all, but it was the lone highlight of action in that movie. Unless you count lifting stuff as action.

There's no denying Superman's role in being instrumental in establishing the CBM movie genre, and in influencing all the Raimis and Nolans and Whedons and Snyders and Singers that have followed humbly in Donner's footsteps.

But the movie hasn't aged well, despite Chris Reeve's legacy as THE film Superman that set the gold standard for the role. Lex Luthor was a joke, even in 1978 (a powerful man with the resources of a major megacorporation at his disposal was reduced to a low-rent thief with a gang of idiots as his minions....he didn't even remotely resemble comic-book Lex); the fx are painfully outdated; the "reverse-polarity gravitational time shift" is the most laughable deus ex of all time.

Superman needs a facelift. Singer sure as hell didn't do it for SR; it remains to be seen whether or not Zack can do it in 2013.

that's not really a fair criticism of luthor, lexcorp wasn't even a thing until post crisis.

And I haven't met anyone over the age of 45 who even mentions those movies in the same sentence as S:TM, much less has seen them all. Seems like you're only focusing on the young male demographic of movie goers.

Exactly. That's like saying Adam West's Batman costume should have been darker, when it was actually representing the look of the comics at the time.

Yeah, I don't even think evil ruthless businessman Lex was even around at the time of the movie's release.

Luthor in the Superman films was more like comic relief. He never once felt threatening or like an actual villain.

He did to me. I just never liked his plans. His plans in SM1 and Returns centered around making money of of land.

It was stupid.

SM2 was decent as far as his plan goes (still about land to a degree) but SM4 was stupid too.

Superman has aged well. None of its sequels have.

only the deal with paramount might mean it's still a paramount logo.

Yeah it will be the Paramount logo in front of the film. Maybe the credits will have "in association with Walt Disney Pictures". The fact that the MARVEL logo it's just MARVEL now, not MARVEL studios links it to Disney

For me it's still a good movie, but so incredibly corny for me to even consider it being the top CBM of all time. It hasn't aged as well as some people think. I just can't realistically see most people still holding it up as greatest CBM of all time.

Saying it isn't the greatest CBM of all time isn't the same as saying it's rubbish.

I'm hoping Avengers & TDKR are going to be my new favourites after this summer!

Yeah, i dont get the whole rivalry thing; the more great movies out there, the merrier. I dont enjoy other peoples miseries, nor do i pay to see a dud gladly.

I don't. In fact I'd call that the "generic" status quo list.
