The bad start of summer 2010

Don't forget the Superman reboot for later 2012.

And the bad summer continues! This weekend was the least successful first week of June since 1997.

Okay. Since they keep throwing these statistics at us then let's take a closer look. So far May 2010 was the least attended since 2001. That was when The Mummy Returns, A Knight's Tale, Shrek, and Pearl Harbor were released. Memorial Day Weekend was the least attended since 1993. That's when Cliffhanger ruled the box office. And now it's the least grossing first week of June since 1997. That's when Con Air opened at #1 with $24.1 million.

The Sorcerer's Apprentice opening the same day that Inception is.

No longer. Disney pushed the release date up two days, so The Sorcerer's Apprentice will open Wednesday, July 14. Bruckheimer and co. must be paranoid if they expect Inception will get TDK-sized numbers.

AND ticket prices today or at least double what they were 10 years ago in certain places, which makes it even sadder.

Yeah, Con Air's $24 million is atleast $40 million in today's prices.

Opening it up two days before Inception is pretty much opening it on the same day as Inception.

It's a counter to Inception, basically. Something families can go check out, mostly because Inception, while it has cool fx, might get a little too heady for some of the younger set.

Though I would like to see an Inception Happy Meal. :o

Warners opened Harry Potter 6 on a Wednesday, but when the first weekend came around part of the demand burned away (as opposed to a record-breaking weekend gross). And a lot of kids will be out of school in a matter of weeks, so they and their parents will probably want to avoid the Friday and Saturday crowds by seeing it on a weekday.

As for the summer lineup being lackluster, I'm not surprised. A lot of crappy stuff came out, but the demand for the two threequels (Toy Story 3 and Eclipse) will bring out the crowd. And the turnaround could come as early as next weekend.

I highly doubt inception will get TDK numbers. TDK grossed as much as it did because it was a sequel to a popular movie, because of the Joker, and because of the tragedy surrounding Heath Ledger, and seeing his swan song on screen.

Inception looks very interesting, especially since Nolan said he drew inspiration from films like Dark City and the 13th Floor, which are two of my favorite sci-fi films. It could be a suprise hit, but with another major film opening the same day the sorcerer's apprentice would have to open less than 10 million, and with all the promoting Disney is giving to the film, that's not likely even if it does completely suck.

What really pisses me off is they're making it PG-13. To quote the Joker to Nolan, "what happened did your balls drop off?" I mean isn't this the guy who wrote and directed momento?

This film should have been rated R, but Warner figured they could suck in all the teeny bopper TDK fans to go see it.

Why should Inception be R-rated? Does being more violent or whatever mean it will be a better movie? Plus you honestly expected WB to let a $200 million summer tentpole be rated R? Get real.

have you seen Inception?

ummm okay. Warners gave this man nearly 200 million for his passion project, being Inception. Meaning that they gave him total creative freedom and the freakin' money to do a movie that's a huge risk. Maybe Nolan didn't do a Rated R film about dreams.

So when whatever you wrote has no weight whatsoever.

TDK should have been rated R, but WB somehow paid off the MPAA to let Two-Face slide. :hehe:

And yeah, no way is any studio gonna let their big summer blockbuster be rated R. Nolan's a smart man, he knows the game.

The only time a rating should piss you off is when the final product is compromised, like when John McClane couldn't say motherf**ker.

not a snowball's chance in hell will Inception receive TDK numbers, there were plenty of factors that came into play with that fluke

are people expecting that from 'Inception'?? it never occured to me....Im definitely interested in the film though

Basically if anyone of these guys is in the starring role, it would behoove one to rate the film R.

If you're doing a mind bending sci-fi epic that's inspired by Connery era Bond and Philip K. Dick, what would be the point of goring it up?

The Marmaduke Kids Meal.

Really, Burger King? Do you really hate children that much?

if that kids meal came with a dog turd in it, it'd probably be better than the movie from what Ive heard

just give me the cardboard crown and Im happy

I've actually seen some of the super hardcore Nolan fans voice that expectation, and apparently some of the same people will tell you it's the only film that matters this summer, or this year for that matter.

I wouldnt say this has been a bad summer for movies, too me 2006 was horrific. I think the main problem is this year nothing big kicked off the summer. Instead of ironman 2 starting us off with a bang we had nightmare on elm street set the tone and in turn kinda sucked the ussual bang alittle that were use too. I like to believe that if you have a big budget movie start in late april early may and it does huge numbers then it kinda sends the message to the average movie goers that its time to head to the movies but this year we had nightmare on elm street kinda tank and it kinda screwed up the mojo. as odd as it sounds that is the main reason, oh and also having may filled with complete crap that clearly noone wanted to see except for maybe shrek and ironman. I see though this being one of those summers that picks up late but finishes strong. I really believe once the A-team rolls out things will return to the normal summer blockbuster feel.

What the hell are you talking about??

The teeny bopper crowd are the ones that are into Twilight right now. TDK may have made a **** ton of money which means it was seen by a **** ton of people but it didn't have some teeny bopper following.

The film doesn't need to be rated R to be good but I hope Nolan doesn't focus the camera on bodies that have been shot and have no blood stains on their clothes. I would rather any and all characters that get shot, get shot off screen than have that. They got away with blood in IM and some other PG-13 films. Blood isn't needed but it does look stupid when someone gets fired upon like the bank manager in TDK and he's on the ground with no signs of actually being hit by anything.

I'd consider myself a hardcore Nolan fan but I don't think there is anyway that Inception make TDK numbers which isn't a bad thing. It'll be a very successful movie and make a buttload of money. One movie that does have a chance to surpass TDK numbers is Toy Story 3. That movie is going to be absolutely huge, if Alice in Wonderland can make a billion dollars, I'm pretty sure Toy Story 3 will as well.

it does have an interesting concept IMO, Ill certainly check it out but Im not expecting a reinvention of cinema or anything like that

Is the international market becoming more important than the domestic market?

The summer box office may be down nearly 4 percent from a year ago domestically, but it is up 64 percent through May overseas, Daily Variety reported today (Wednesday), citing studio estimates. The statistic is even more impressive given the fact that many overseas currencies have declined against the dollar since the beginning of the year, the trade publication observed, pointing in particular to the 15-percent decline of the euro. Currency fluctuation, however, has not affected China, where the government only recently allowed its currency to rise a few cents against the dollar, and where box office revenue has increased a whopping 189 percent from the same period a year ago. In Russia, it has risen 70 percent. Variety quoted David Kornblum, Disney’s head of international sales and distribution as saying, “There are multiple examples of overperforming titles internationally. … Most everyone knows this is where the money is being made now.”
