Bale was not an A-Lister before he was Batman. Eckhart arguably still isn't. Oldman is someone who brings acclaim, not box office dollars. What the actors Nolan has assembled have in common is that they can all act, regardless of their "list" status.
Michael Stuhlbarg has been my choice for Riddler for a while. He's so underrated. Good choice, Eddie Dean.
Bale was definitely a rising star. American Psycho had a ton of acclaim, and he'd turned in solid performances in some weak-to-decent genre films (Reign of Fire, Equilibrium). But, personally, I don't think there's anything about Bentley that sets him apart. He can play dark, sure, but he always comes off as creepy and unlikable. Batman takes more than darkness. The actor needs to play so many layers: dark and brooding, a playboy facade, violent, heroic. Bentley doesn't have it.

Neither Bale or Eckhardt were A listers before their Batman role.
Bale is interesting in that he was a rising star when he was younger. Then his star fizzled a bit, and he became a rising star again, years and years later. Something that's almost unheard of in Hollywood. And Christian Bale was on WB's radar because of Darren Aronofsky. Fans like to pretend he was always their first choice, but until WB/Aronofsky started tossing around the name, they had no clue who Bale was. As I recall, the fan choice prior to Bale was David Boreanz.

And Bentley was the other name Aronofsky brought to WB's table.
Maybe Tobey should be the next Batman, since he's not Spidey anymore.![]()

Not funny.![]()
