The Batman Reboot Casting Thread

Batman's a dark, brooding, gritty character. Well at least Bruce Wayne is as Batman. The smartass thing is more so Dick Grayson or Terry McGinnis's schtick.
Obviously you've never read a Batman comic from the 70s or earlier. That brooding crap is just like the ninja nonsense...Frank GRITTY Miller and his like. For most of his history Batman has been an uptight smartass fist-fighter who used gadgets. It wasn't until the 80s that he became the Kung-Fu Emo Kid who can never be beaten due to Plot Mail.

Even in the 80's Justice League, with Guy Gardner, he was primarily a a smart-ass/hard-ass. It wasn't taken for granted that he was 'gritty' and anti-social, he just liked to be in charge. This is what I like about Batman - the Brave and the Bold. Batman's personality is much closer to the Batman I like (which is also why I prefer the new Nightwing-as-Batman setup).

I will admit I have limited access to many older comics (I am only 19 years old), but I do not recall (nor have I heard much mention of) him being uptight and a wise-cracker during the 1970s or earlier. He has always, except for in the campier interpretations, been a dark character. Batman is not an emo kid, nor is he a practitioner of Kung-Fu, and to mischaracterize him as such says that you certainly don't know about Kung-Fu or emo kids. Batman is a dark, tragic hero, a badass detective. The Nolan films have hit the nail on the head in that regard. If I want to see a wise-cracking hero, I'll watch Spider-Man, or maybe Dick Grayson or Terry McGinnis as Batman.

They did Frank Miller's Batman better than Frank Miller did, I'll give them that.

And by 'smart-ass' I don't mean wise-cracking, I mean witty and a bit condescending. Also, I expanded my original post above ^

He's always been rougher and meaner than most of the rest, but he didn't used to act like some non-lethal version of the Punisher with a huge chip on his shoulder. He just thought he was surrounded by fools.

I realize this is not what most people today think of as 'Batman', but my uncle had hundreds and hundreds of comics going back to the sixties. I went through the whole Silver Age before I read much modern stuff.

My preference is the darker, but not psychotic, modern incarnation. This incarnation isn't a non-lethal version of the Punisher, he is a man who straddles the line between hero and anti-hero, which is really compelling to me.

Jon Hamm for Batman
Jim Carrey for Joker
Daniel Craig for Mr. Freeze
Ben Kingsley for Hugo Strange
John Cena for Bane
Toby Maguire for Scarecrow (yes im serious)
Philip Seymour Hoffman for Penguin
Johnny Depp for Riddler
Leo DiCaprio for Black Mask
Bradley Cooper for Deadshot
Sam Worthington for Two Face

besides Hamm, Craig and Hoffman, this is why I think geeks makes for the worse casting directors. John Cena huh? Sam Worthington? :-0

Hamm, Craig and Depp are the only good names on that list.

I think I'd rather see a cable TV series (maybe on AMC or HBO) based on "Gotham Central".

Do a Batman series from the perspective of Jim Gordon and Gotham PD, and their fight against the villains in Gotham City, and in dealing with the Batman himself. Start the series with the first Gotham PD case in which the Batman appears. You can trace the emergence and pursuit of each of his villains, as well as with the ongoing investigation into the Batman himself. Do it with a semi-Noir feel. Batman would be involved -- but mostly in shadow, and brief appearances ... a bit like Nine Lives, Year One and Gotham Central. Its more a Gordon story than a Batman story ... but it could be a unique perspective on the legend. It could slowly emerge into a more Batman-centered series as Gordon starts putting things together. It could also trace the rise and fall of Harvey Dent over the long term.

Sort of a Law & Order: Gotham ...

As for movies ... I'd like to see Nolan and Bale take several years off, and then come back and do their version of Miller's The Dark Knight Returns.

Christian Bale is extremely selfish and stupid in that decision but you're right.

And LOL everyone says John Hamm should play everything, Ive heard him suggested for Punisher, The Thing, and now Batman xD

did you here this out of Christian Bale's mouth or people saying he said that or believes in that?

Kodi Smit-Mcphee for Robin, before he grows too old. Or Max Records. The character needs a really good young actor.
The Penguin, played by Edward Furlong. He plays all sorts of gangsta roles. And his physical appearance is right for the character, the biggest gangster villain of them all. I go with a younger cast here. No Bob Hoskins, no matter how great it would have been.

Darren Aronofsky. It's his turn to be a Batman director now. He did not made it through last time, when Nolan came onboard.

Robin definitely won't be in Batman 4 with Christopher Nolan and crew still producing (godfathering) the project.

Not really. Just because they produce doesn't mean they have final say on what's to be included.

TO be fair though, the only good suggestion made was Darren Aronofsky for a new director.

Aren't my Robin suggestions good enough for you? You want Freddie Highmore instead?

I don't know who I would want for Robin at the moment actually, I don't know much actors in the age frame that Robin should be.

As long as Frank Miller isn't writing the script! :yay:

It's obvious he will.

This is the same situation as Superman, Nolan is getting his people to draft a script he approves of.

I don't seriously think Warners trusts anyone other than Nolan to plan Batman's future, based on Robinov's comments.

Makes sense though, it's a billion dollar franchaise. They have too much to lose if they screw it up again.
