But then again, in this comic book world, having an open mouth and long billowing cape are accepted without question or explanation even though they are counter-intuitive to fighting crime in every way. In the end, they are all design choices, not too different than a contrasting gold belt.
Problem here is that you just make this statement and don't at all attempt to support it. It's not just that I argued how such things don't actually present an obvious disadvantage(see army helmets comparison), but it's that I argued for the various advantages they present: He can jump off of buildings and fly around a city thanks to the cape, he can protect others..etc(for example).
That's a tactical advantage Point Black Period. If you want to argue why those ideas are false, then you we'll get somewhere new but if you simply say it's all aesthetics in comics..
-Like asking why a desert navy seal wears a giant telecommunications back pack. It hampers his ability to move around and weighs him down but it also provides various 'good things' that help in his job. That's the cape for batman, various 'good things'. Why superman wears a cape I can't say.
In they end, they are not all simply design choices, some serve the premise in particular ways beyond aesthetics the other doesn't. The yellow belt vs the black(very dark) one.
...It's a fine explanation-but ultimately unnecessary when the real explanation is- "it looks cool".
It doesn't work towards or against any sort of logistical "tactical advantage". That's my entire point- that it's all aesthetics. How does a gold belt present a "tactical disadvantage"?
Which is not what I'm doing. At all. It's seems you've misunderstood: I don't prefer the black over the gold belt- Like I said, both work depending on the interpretation. I DO take exception with trying to put down a traditional design element (which is exactly what it is) in favour of rationalizing or attempting to validate the new one that you do favour.
Your first point- Why he fights crime in a costume and not in various other ways is an attempt to rationalize the absurd. The fact that there is an attempt that can be made is entirely the point. Again, gold/yellow belt? I'm still waiting.
Your second- I'm not sure why you are asking me what advantage the gold/yellow belt provides. I've consistently asserted the answer is zero imo.
Lastly- You said the poster(and his ilk) was trashing the old to boost the new, however I think he has an appreciation for both, only that he likes one more for said particular reason and likes the other less for said particular reason(can't speak for him though). I see what you are trying to argue here but imo, you aren't quite doing it. One approach presents the Tac-advantage, the other doesn't and in various cases works against it. I think the premise works best when all things work towards the former.
